The "Lost Trail Club Riders" have been having a pretty good year in 2006, so far, with a ride a month at least....Maybe it's time to start planning a little further out....Not too far that everyone loses interest but just far enough to plan time off....
January 2007.....Ride of the month club.....Mexico and ?
The route is tentative, as are the dates!!!!
The riders so far are Teeds, Irondawg and Rocketman.
All we need to do now is fill in the details.....

Whoo Hooo ... I will have the maps with me ...
Oh yea ... dates look good to me except that is ONLY 10 days ... I will be ready on the 2nd ... OK, the afternoon of the 1st ... Well, I COULD be ready on the 31st ... but no sooner, because I will not be back from Big Bend until the 30th.

10 days is probably all I could swing. I'm not counting travel time to the border in that 10 days So I'm figuring another 2 days to get the border back. that will put me away from home and work for 12 days That is assuming we enter from Texas.

Man...I'm half way to Guatemala. I've been thinking hard about a trip like this all day and night. Yes people..it freaking 3 in the morning as I type this. After some thought, I think Jan may not be a good time to do this ride. Oct or late March would be better. The reason is that there will be snow and ice up in the mountains.
Not sure if we could make it down and back to Guat in 10 days...maybe 12. If we went thru central Mexico with a departure point of Eagle Pass that will keep us in the mountains and away from big cities. Figure 300 to 350 miles per day. Stops in Saltillo, Leon, Taxco, and cross into Guat at Ciudad Cuauhtemec. From there its about 100 miles to Coban.
If this is too much we could do MX-lite. Leon was the site of the 2005 World Ralley Cup race. If you're familiar with WRC you know they go out of their way to find the sickest mountain roads to race on. It'd be cool to setup camp in Leon and venture out from there. BTW, Leon is where the shot The Mexican.
Prepping and packing is another challenge. What to bring...what not to bring. How much redundancy do we need? I know that everyone doesn't need there own set of tire irons, 5 tubes of JB Weld, or 4 sets of 1/4 inch sockets. What tires? Full knobby or 50/50? Not sure if full knobby would make the whole trip. But are easy to find in MX.
Food, gas, lodging shouldn't be a problem. Lot's of places that have laundry service if you ask.
OK...I'm going to load my Garmin World Map and start working on a route.
Everyone got their passports?

I can't do Oct. this year. I could proabably do late March though.

This sounds good to me

Your right everybody does not need their own tube of JB Weld but having one tube per every two or three people might not be a bad idea in case of seperation. I would carry my toolpack anyway, but the contents could be altered according to what everybody else is carrying. If we stay at Leon we could probably pre-ship a care package with tires and whatever other misc. things we might need in it
I would probably switch to the D606. It's good for at least 4000 miles of general riding. I would probably expect 3000 miles in Mexico.
Food, gas, lodging shouldn't be a problem. Lot's of places that have laundry service if you ask.
Three pairs of everything has always worked for me on trips where I know I will do wash.

I am not throwing my name in until the details are worked out and I see if I have enough time to get another bike and have it ready to go. I would not want to do that trip on the WR and I really don't want to think about another bike right now.

I'm leary of doing it on the DR350/435. The OK/AR trip will be the first multi day long hard ride I've been on with it. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I'll have a good idea if it's capable.

I was going to use a small bag and a bungie net made for bikes. I gave my last one away, so I have to go up to Cycle gear and buy one before the arkansas trip. I like the nets because you can always manage to stuff one more thing (a water bottle) between the net and the bag.

When are you gonna make your way to Fannin county so we can do the dirt road thing? I found some nice ones the last time. The kind with grass growing up the middle and corn fields on both sides.
I need help getting from Honey Grove to Paris though so the Paris to Decatur ride that nobody talks about any more can actually get done.

You should get the title transferred to you with the seller retaining a lein on the bike......That will get you a duplicate title....But....Ask the seller to let you borrow the original title for the trip......I did it with a bank in Beaumont years ago and it worked out fine...I guess they trusted me!

the same way day labor arrives from everyday ;) LMAO. You just need to do that backwards
In all honesty it all depends on the crossing. Several years ago I took my Jeep on a trailer to San Miguel Allende. I had the tow rig title and Jeep title. They refused to allow me to take the Jeep in. After several hours they finally allowed me to sign the title over my buddy and have it bonded in his name then I also had to get insurance. I would say you should try to get everything in your name or be prepared to pay in order to make it alright. Another thing while I was there a group of motorcycle riders were hanging out. The year prior they had went into Mexico at one point and came out of another. This rider did not get papaerwork and make sure they logged him out at the other departure point. These guys had been there 2 days and they still would not allow him back in the country. They claimed he drove his bike to Mexico and sold it, then flew back. They wanted him to pay fines and the taxes for selling the bike !!!!
I think it can be real easy and then real hrad. Be the best prepared you can from the start !!
Mike Green
Is there a tentative duration for this trip? This is one that I've wanted to do for many years but never got around to it. I've ridden in CC three times, but haven't been back since 1995. One trip we crossed the river at Chinipas and made it to Alamos, spent the night, then headed back north again. I would like to go if it doesn't take me away too long!

Sorry Chris, I missed the last three posts. The letter was a form that the Credit Union signed stating;
THIS IS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT___________ IS/ARE MEMEBERS OF_________ FEDERAL CREDIT UNION AND THAT WE ARE THE LIENHOLDER OF THE_______________, LICENSE PLATE NUMBER__________.
DEPARTURE FROM HOUSTON, TEXAS WILL BE_________________.
DUE TO ARRIVE BACK IN HOUSTON, TEXAS ON________________.
Then they notarize it.
I also had a copy of the title and the registration receipt.
I did all of my paperwork at the Mexican Consul here in Houston and they are more strict than the border. You will have NO problem.
On the post that Mike made about the guy that came back and did not get checked back in, they do it different now. You must give them a credit card number so that if you do not return they charge you $300 to $400.
It is really not difficult.

It'll be a "Spirited" ride Hoop, but plenty "doable"....The Ferry day is actually a day of rest....We'll be hoteling for sure!!!!....No money needed....This is for fun....If we start trying to make money from our hobby and passion it's just a job and " Work Sucks"
We've been trying to do " The Ride of the Month Club" this year....We've done pretty well so far.....July is my month to reunite with my wife....Come on August....
August is the Lost Trail ride.....September, Labor Day weekend is Cloudcroft....Later in September is The Nevada Rally Experience......October is preparation for the November TRH Terlingua D/S ride.....December is still open....January 07 is the Presidio, Copper Canyon, Baja, Arizona, New Mexico and back to Presidio ride....Did I miss anything?
I'm all for hoteling! Less weight to carry on the bike. The cost isn't as dirt cheap as it used to be. The CC area has too much tourism traffic to be really cheap. I've been in Batopilas back in the 90's when the Hotel Mary was booked up and we had to sleep in the "second" hotel. It was a trip.
If anyone's taking suggestions on where to overnight, Creel has some reasonable places to stay (10 years ago). From Presidio, I would assume we can make it to Creel in a day. Chinipas is at the southern end of the CC area, and has a reasonable hotel (10 years ago), and was a very friendly little town. From Creel to Chinipas is a long day's ride (at a relatively leisurely pace, 10 years ago, may be all pavement now). Alamos is across the river and a couple of hours south from Chinipas, it is a very nice town with a couple of hotels to choose from, but more expensive due to gringo tourist traffic.
I'm guessing that we're not doing any side trips in CC to Urique or Batopilas, based on the ambitious round-trip plans.

This statement got me curious, so I pulled up my GPS software and traced out a route, based upon what I know ... what little I know ... and i came up with ..
2,591 miles assuming we start in Presidio and we return to Presidio.
I will not post the route because I know it is wrong in many places ...
I did touch the following
Ojinaga
Chihuahua
Creel
Batopilas
Los Mochis
Ferry to La Paz
Mulege
Coco's Corner
San Felipe
Mike's Sky Ranch
Mexicali
El Paso
Presidio

Tony....That's less than 400 miles per day, if you don't count the ferry day!
I was tired after our 335 mile day ...
I understand that you are responsible for getting us through Baja. All I ask is that we get to both coasts, Coco's Corner and Mike's Sky Ranch ...
I did a bit of zigging and zagging as I went up Baja, so my mileage could well be long. I also got lost going across southern Arizona and New Mexico so I am fairly sure I am a bit fat there as well.
In any case, 400 miles a day will be a push for 10 days of riding ...
John assures me we will make Creel on Day One and that "should" be the longest day.
I know one thing for sure ... All questions will be answered by January 14th, when we roll back into Presidio.
John: What was the name of the maps you got for Arizona and New Mexico?
this is probably a dumb question, but I assume you didn't count the miles that the ferry takes us!
And I know I'm pointing out the obvious, but if we start Day 2 in Creel, the trip to Batopilas is a detour from the main task of getting to the coast. It's about a 160-mile round-trip side trip. 10 years ago, the first 40 miles from Creel were paved, I don't know how much is paved now. Unless of course, there's a new route continuing south from Batopilas where you don't have to back-track!
So, my suggestion would be, if we want to take a side-trip to the bottom of one of the canyons, go to Urique instead, it's only a 70 mile round-trip side trip.
I'd also be curious to know the route we take to Los Mochis. After that, I'll shut up, because I don't know anything about Baja.

John is working on the route. He has an extensive amount of time touring around the area as his wife is from the area. I assume he will get us there with a minimum amount of wandering about. Lord knows I did (wander about).

I never said it, but thoes pics are great. I cannot wait!
Edit: I rode the bike this morning. I am haveing fuel issues all the way to the main jet, so I am going to assume the pilot jet is partially clogged. Starts right up, but when I decelerate to a stop with the brakes it stalls, and sitting at lights I have to give it a little gas and it stays idleing. It isn't smooth 1/4 throttle, but gets up and goes when a give it a lot of gas.
I figure at least it isn't the other way around. I like to give it gas.

You should get the title transferred to you with the seller retaining a lein on the bike......That will get you a duplicate title....But....Ask the seller to let you borrow the original title for the trip......I did it with a bank in Beaumont years ago and it worked out fine...I guess they trusted me!
Rocketman is right on the money. It sometimes depends on where you cross and whose there and whether or not they are in a bad mood too.
Last year we went to three different border crossings before we could get across. We were trailering our bikes to Monterrey. The truck and the trailer and all the bikes on the trailer had to be the same owner. Nothing smaller than 500cc's was allowed, so we put some Fox stickers over over the "450" on our bikes and told them that they were 525's. (it doesnt specify on the titles) Furthermore we were supposed to ride the 525's (full dirtbikes)across and out of town before we were allowed to trailer them. We managed to convince and pursuade otherwise and all went well.
I mention all this just to point out that you should be ready way ahead of time as it could take all day to get anything done if your not prepared, the previous year was even crazier and the rules/ laws seem to be made up as they go in some cases.
It's easier on your DS bikes as they are driven across but thought I would share our story just so all realize it isnt always a cakewalk.

I'm officially putting my name in for the Mexico trip...I'm planning on taking the HP2, but I may change my mind by January and take the DRZ. I've found a 1.6 gallon aux fuel container that mounts on the rear luggage rack, so that should give me at least 150 mile fuel range. Tijuana from Weather Channel, 46 - 68 F
Found a reference in Clement Salvadori's book that says to stay on the east coast to stay warm.
Creel, from an old map, 23 - 56 F
Batopilas, 48 - 72 F
Sounds like it will be chilly away from the coast and at high elevations.
Phoenix 43 - 65 F

The adventure has already started...here's an email I sent the gang yesterday....
So....
Today, Lupita's niece is flying in to Austin at 3:30 and she's going to pick her up. We're both a little worried since this is her first time flying and crossing the border by herself. We are hoping that all her paperwork is in order because if she doesn't come to Austin...I'm not going to Mexico.
I get a call at 2:30...it's Lupita. I've packed for nothing, she didn't make the flight. Lupita's upset and speaking fast in spanglish.
Me: Slow down...what's wrong?
L: Vanessa.......911......plastic.....niece (nose in spanish)
Me: What happened to Vanessa?
L: She has Lite Brite!
Me: What?
L: Plastic in her nose!
Me: Okay...Vanessa has Lite Brite in her nose?
L: SI!!!
Me: She put a Lite Brite peg up her nose.
L: Si! And I can't get it out so I called 911.
Me: Is she breathing? Is she blue?
L: Si...but I can't tell what color.
Me: Not the peg...her face...is it blue?
L: No. She's only crying a little. Okay, the ambulance is here.
She put's the phone down and I can hear the sirens outside. A little later I hear the EMT come in. I hear Vanessa saying hi and bye. Next I hear the EMT say she's gonna check V's nose with a light and wanted L to hold her. I hear a bunch of screaming and then the phone goes dead.
Two minutes later L calls me back and says everything is okay. Either V didn't have a peg up her nose or she swallowed it. Thank God everything's okay. I explain that it was okay to call 911 but if V was breathing, she should have called me first and then gone to the doctor. But, I understand since she's preggo and can't move that well plus the stress of her niece coming.
All I can think of is that's gonna be one helluv an expensive poop.
Hope everyone else's day is going good.
Cheers,
John

I think everyone who was going to make it made it. They are all in south west Texas right now. I spoke to Teeds earlier and he has been packing and repacking. Man, I had everything ready, new tires on the bike, Bags packed, but, while they were driving, I was getting cut on.
On Tuesday I found out that I had a good tear in my Meniscus, and need to be cut on soon, The Dr, said that if I went to MX, I might not come backon my own power. I went skiing last week and the knee was the size of a grape fruit, and that was a first for me. Anyhow, I had the surgery today, turns out not be to the meniscus, but the patella had a nice notch in the back, he cleaned it up and I now with the living again. I have moved my knee and do not feel the popping that was there before, but I will not know until I put some body weight on it. No pain yet, I am on vicodin, but I am also completely coherent, which means that I want to get out in the garage and do stuff on this time off. I am glad I rented movies since this brain is going crazy. Yall have a good evening. And everyone traveling, have fun, stay safe.

Irondawg's bike suffered a broken case and is not repairable. The were somewhere near Tammoro(sp?) and he is taking the train back to Presidio.
She said she had spoken with Teeds and he was the one with with the hurt knee. He was in Creel en route back to Presidio.
She said Steve, DRZwilsy(Ian) and Bill Neeley were going to continue on. She did say that Steve says the riding there was fantastic, better than Baja.

I have some more news via Teeds. He came across the border with Skinny last night. They are well.
Skinny's ignition died the first day, and Teeds hurt his knee in a low side/ high side/ low side S. He said that some accidents happen in slow motion, but this one never slowed down. His knee has fluid build up, but it isn't too bad.
Irondawg's chain must have broke, and his engine case broke. I think he is near the border, but his bike is on a train in Mexico somewhere. He is going back in to find it.
The 6 amigos are staying in $50 a night rooms living it up; riding every day in what some would call paradise.
And through the grapevine I heard that the 3-4 that kept on going, turned around and met up with the 6 amigos, but that wasn't confirmed.
The 6 amigos plan to get across the border Firday night and be back home Saturday, we will get he real stories then :rider:

I'm back at home and Teeds is in the motel in Presidio waiting for the survivors to arrive Fri. or Sat. We spoke with Iron Dawg about mid-night last night & he confirmed the broken case, so he's on the gimp express from Chihuahua. The rest of the story will have to wait until the remaining riders get back...anyone want to buy a really nice TE-610 cheap???:angryfire

Well as of this moment we, teamswaney +2, Micah and myself are between Ozona and Comstock headed home. Rocketman, Hoop, Basebill and DRZWilsy are headed back to the border from Cuatomech to stay the night and then off to the Lost Trail.
Yesterday while driving through Chihuahua the rebuilt waterpump cover that Jeremy sculpted blew up from the pressure but luckily there was a new one waiting for us at the DHL terminal only a few miles away, BIG thanks to Greasemonkey:clap:
We did not want to be headed home today but Teeds called yesterday and told us that some severe weather was headed our way so we humped it all the way from Creel to Chihuahua. That ride stinks:giveup:
I would post more but you guys will have to wait till we get home.
If you are really interested save up your vacation, teeds has a novel he is going post shortly. The funny thing is he was only involved in 2 days of riding. Sorry Tony but it is going to be alot of reading!!!!!
