While brainstorming a trip to try and capture Star Trails / Milky Way and light painting, me and others have found a lot of good resources on the web to help educate us on executing capturing a good final image.

Here are some of what has been shared or found that I truly enjoyed. Feel free to share yours or even an image you have been successful capturing, in this thread.

Free Software

Stellarium
Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.

StarStaX
StarStaX is a fast multi-platform image stacking and blending software, which allows to merge a series of photos into a single image using different blending modes. It is developed primarily for Star Trail Photography where the relative motion of the stars in consecutive images creates structures looking like star trails. Besides star trails, it can be of great use in more general image blending tasks, such as noise reduction or synthetic exposure enlargement.

This thread has been in the back of my mind since you posted it....

I've really tried to get some good shots of the moon and the Milky Way - but I'm just not getting the results I think are acceptable. Looking at what others are creating, I know I've got the gear to pull it off from a camera/lens combination. I'm just not sure about the tracking capability. Man that's a lot of information to take in for tracking of the object you want to shoot. And more gear!

Do you want to try and get to BB again this year and give it a go?
