frame sliders on engine guards?

I was planning on getting the Pat Walsh engine guard/skid for my 05 DL650. The guards have holes for hiway pegs. Could you install long frame sliders on them and get more protection AND have a place to put your feet up? Or, would the sliders not really work since they wouldn't actually be mounted to the frame?
