August 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st is the perfect time for the second annual "Lost Trail Ride"

Day 0......Thursday night....Meet at "Camp Easy" in Pandale.
Day 1......Pandale to Terlingua Ranch.
Day 2......Terlingua Ranch through BBNP to BBSP and the bunkhouse.
Day 3......BBSP to VanHorn, with side trip to Sierra Blanca and the Hot Springs, and back to BBSP bunkhouse.
Day 4......Back to Pandale and load up for home.....Home Monday night....Late....

Two nights in the state Park.

We carry everything we need, no support vehicle.

This would be a perfect practice for the January Mexico trip.

Maybe we could induct some more riders into the "Lost Trail Club"

Talked to Teeds a little while ago......He's in for my ride idea....There's not much he isn't in for as you have seen.....

The total ride will be around 1700 miles.....I'll see if we can get space in the State Park Bunkhouse as soon as they are back to work.

This will be a repeat of the ride last August, 2005....If the "Lost Trail" is passable!!!!

Mike

Mike: It is 6 hours to Ozona from here.
I-20 to Cisco
206 to 67 south of Coleman
67 to San Angelo
277 to Sonora
I-10 to Ozona

The new TMTC Park is about 30 minutes farther with Easy's about the same.

My vote would be that we start from Easy's. More fun and he would watch our stuff like a hawk, plus it would knock 100 miles of frankly boring roads off the ride.

If there is ANY way you can make the August ride, you should do so. The ride will be worth the time and FULL of memories that cannot be described and might well be changing, if they really do manage to tighten down the borders. Parts of the Lost Trail are awash in the Rio Grande River most of the time. That is what Steve means by maybe.

For the record ... I am already out on a trip to Bonneville from the 10th through the 16th of August.

How about we combine the July and August trip and set this trip for the last weekend of July? My thumb should be good to go by then. I can make the original dates Steve mentioned.

Don't be scared of the 1,700 + miles. There are ways to deal with it and I would guess 30~40 percent is asphalt as there is no dirt alternative in the area.

I repeat ... This will be a definitive West Texas loop.

Two nights will be spent at the Big Bend Ranch State Park Headquarters. Situated 23 miles down a gravel road within a park, Sauceda serves as the hub of activity for a park that is larger than the state of Rhode Island. Approaching 100 years in age and once the headquarters of the Big Bend Ranch, Sauceda now serves travelers of today with the charm of yesterday.

Steve

I hope THAT does not become a new nickname ... it might be hard to explain LOL

The thumb is OK, considering I took a fair size divot out of it. Care Now and Dr. Martin (seriously) took good care of me. We had a great laugh as she has a broken leg from a motorcycle accident. She highsided attempting to do one of the evasive manuevers for the "final" at the motorcycle safety class.

It looks like we have places to stay everynight, so camping gear will not be needed. Right? What about carrying extra water in this area? I have some Nalgene bottles and will probably get a bigger bladder. Food...Will we have places to stop for lunch or should we plan on having lunch on the trail?

Talked to Tony again this morning.....I've modified my first post to reflect what we agreed upon.....

This is the best West Texas D/S ride you can join us for.....Space is limited because of the Big Bend State Park bunkhouse....So....If you want to be considered for membership in the "Lost Trail Group" decide quickly.....

Some days may top 400 miles....Be prepared!!!!

I'll report back on accomodations ASAP....

You guys are making this look very interesting..... What are fuel stop distances ??

Mike

Mike: You DO NOT want to miss this trip. The Lost Trail alone is worth the cost of admission and we will throw in the following for free ...

Easy
Pandale
The No Name Cafe
Big Bend National Park
"The" River Road
South County Road
North County Road
Terlingua Ranch
The Bad Rabbit Cafe
perhaps Miss Tracy's Cafe
Hwy 170
Candelaria
Ruidosa
Indian Hot Springs
Indian Hot Springs Road (nicer than Pinto Canyon Road)
and
Border Patrol Agents

Generally speaking ...
Pandale
Sanderson
Marathon
Big Bend National Park
Study Butte
Terlingua
Lajitas
Big Bend Ranch State Park
Presidio
Ruidosa
Candelaria
Van Horn
Sierra Blanca
Indian Hot Springs
then in reverse ... :eek2:

The longest distance between fuel stops is 135 miles and this is the "Lost Trail". You can carry enough fuel, to make the distance, in a backpack. It has proven to be even a stretch for Steve and I.

Tony, If I ride to Denton, can I ride with you? I'll bring my own tie downs :trust:

Chris: I got you covered and I have tie downs. I am going to contact Gene as well. My truck will handle four comfortably, five is doable, six a crowd and seven only on the ride back to Ozona from Van Horn last year (never again).

The total ride will be around 1700 miles

Seriuosly? :rider:

One way Ozona to Van Horn was 785 last year. We are knocking 50 off the front end by starting from Easy's and adding about 75 miles at the tail end for the loop out to the Indian Hot Springs, which bumps it up to about 810 miles each way. The last day will be shortend by cutting off Big Bend National Park, but by what amount I have not figured out yet. I am guessing about 150 miles, which would actually result in a total distance of about 1400 to 1450 miles with a couple of other shortcuts Steve and I have discussed taking.

Sounds like fun, except for carrying all your stuff.

two pair of underwear, one pair of shorts, moccs or flip flops, couple of t shirts and a tooth brush is about it.

Chris: You will only be required to carry gear on Day 01, 02 and 04. The out and back from Big Bend Ranch to Indian Hot Springs should be "sans" gear. Admittedly, I am speaking without us verifying that we can leave our gear at BBRSP, but I am betting it will not be a problem. None of the rest of the days are really that technical, just extended ... notice I did not use long. ;-)

I am considering a set of Sweet Cheeks (http://www.cycle-analyst.com/Sweet_Cheeks.htm) to a carry some of my gear and increase my seat comfort at the same time. I figure I could substitute clothes for the bottles.

Accommodations:

Thursday - August 17, 2006

Easy’s - Pandale, Texas

Steve and I are trying to track Easy down. I will update ASAP. He has cabins of various sizes and configurations.

Friday - August 18, 2006

Terlingua Ranch Lodge - (432) 371-2416

All rooms are double / double so only half of us need to make reservations. Hold on your reservations for a bit to allow Steve to call them and get a group of buildings tied down where we will not be scattered about.

Saturday / Sunday - August 19 / August 20, 2006

Big Bend Ranch State Park - (432) 229-3416 - ask for Sylvia

Steve had a block of 6 beds in the bunkhouse on hold for each of the above nights. Tell them (Sylvia) that you are with the Steve Smith party when you call. They are only holding the reservations for five days, so call this week. Everyone should make their own reservation at Big Bend Ranch State Park.

IMPORTANT: When you make your reservation for a bed, also tell them you also want a reservation for the following meals.

Dinner - Saturday, August 19, 2006
Breakfast - Sunday, August 20, 2006
Dinner - Sunday, August 20, 2006
Breakfast - Monday, August 21, 2006

All meals at Sauceda are prepared and served by TDPW personnel and are by reservation only. There are no other food service choices available unless you want to ride in to Presidio or you carry your food in with you.

When I called Big Bend ranch state park and told Sylvia that I was with the Steve Smith party she said Steve had called and reserved 6 beds. She then said if I wanted to make a reservation it would make it 7 beds. Is this right, or did Steve reserve 6 beds for all of us? The way I read it above it sounded like we just needed to put our name on one of the beds, but when I called it sounded like if we call Sylvia she's going to add beds to the block.

Pleas help a confused guy.

What I understood from Steve's phonecall is that he had them on hold, but we were supposed to call and get one of the beds. It will likely take Steve to get this worked out. I didn't hear him say that he had "reserved" the beds (i.e. put them on a CC) so I assume they would simply go off hold if we did not claim them. I don't know that is matters if you get a separate reservation, because Steve could just let the ones on hold go. I seem to remember there are 14~16 beds total.

Perhaps we should await his comments. He and Linda are nearing Beaumont (I'm guessing) about this time as they were going through Houston a bit ago.

I'm gonna get one before we head west. Now is the time to get one, before the manufacturer is "discovered" and he raises his prices. A fellow on the Yahoo XR650R site swears by his.

He also found a cheap set of saddle bags at an on-line tack shop. Something like $20~25 for a set. I will dig up the link and post it. He posted the link right AFTER I had purchased a tail bag from Wolfman. :headbang:

Ian et al: Only BBRSP is critical and Steve might need to straighten out the confusion there. He has 6 beds on hold and they think he has them reserved. He is in BMT working today and tomorrow trting to wrap up a project, so he will likely not see this until this evening.

Frugal tip #2, Tractor Supply sells tank bags. I bought two different sets. One big set that holds lots and one smaller ser that holds not as much as the big one. The small one works well on the XRR.

I think the big set was $35.00 and the small set was $20.00

A little tip that I have not read here yet but I know it has been discussed between a few of us.
When Roger and I went to Copper Canyon in 03 one of the guys that went with us had a great idea he only took his oldest most worthless clothes then after he wore them he tossed them in the trash or left them at the entrance to the caves the indians were living in. It really worked great.(That was the tip)

Now for what worked for me.
I had the Dirt Bagz system and I was able to get in 5 pair of jeans, 7 shirts, 7 underwear and socks, 3 thermal undergear, rain gear and all my hygiene stuff(YES STEVE, SHAVING SUPPLIES)

I rolled each item as tight and as small as possible, wrapped them with a rubberband and stacked them in the bags. I had plenty of room. We left the racks for tools and other stuff.

We had extra levers in the tool bags and had tie strapped extra clutch and brake cables to the existing ones. We all also carried extra tubes. Roger carried the tool kit and we attempted not to duplicate the tools we had.
I had a pretty nice first aid kit that included a pouch of "Quick Clot" which, at that time, was a new clotting agent that immediately clots any wound including an R.P.G. through the chest:eek2:

I seriously doubt you guys need any of that info. for the August ride but since it is a "Practice Run" for Mexico you may want to try it out.

Anyway, John, did the LP bracket work?

Matt is in. He is going to call BBRSP tomorrow and secure a reservation there. I told him to hold a bit on Terlingua Ranch and see if someone else steps up to go.

I hooked Matt with a list of goodies to get for his pig last night. He will be ready.

Steve, what was the count on the beds at Easy's?

Chris, you up to share gas?

Has anyone talked with Terlingua Ranch? All I have got is the recording, both times.

According to the Honda manual, you will need two spanner wrenches to change the sag as it has a nut and a lock nut. Your lock nut might be sticking to either the nut or the shock body.

Hopefully Steve will chime in with some input ...

Chris: It will be easier and quicker if you go to Pandale Road (Exit 361) just west of Ozona and turn left. The last 3~4 miles are not paved, but other than that is is smooth sailing, mostly on I-10. West of Kerrville they have bumped the speed limit to 80. :trust:

This is what I already have from previous rides, it may not be complete but I'll update it as we get closer..

This was developed for ride where we had a support vehicle. This year we are riding alone so we'll need to add some things.....

The “LOST TRAIL” Dual Sport Ride.

Minimum Required Riding Safety Gear.

It’s just a matter of time until the type of riding we do causes us to take an unexpected visit to the ground….We can usually blame ourselves for doing something stupid….As Thomas Williams commented after riding 80 plus miles with a broken leg that probably could have been avoided with modern riding boots…” It sure keeps you humble, doesn’t it”

Most get offs happen at lower speeds when gravity, which is not always our friend, takes over and quickly wins…

Knowing that this is going to happen, just not when, requires that we be prepared…

Dual Sport riding is not a cruise around the block and not wearing the right gear can really spoil your riding enjoyment, not to mention spoiling the day for everyone else riding with you…

The majority of injuries can be minimalized by wearing the appropriate safety gear.

This is my list of minimum requirements….

Full face helmet with visor.
Goggles with a lens that is not all scratched up. If you use tinted or photosensitive lenses it’s a good idea to carry spare clear lens goggles for use at night.
Long sleeve riding jersey.
Elbow and forearm protectors, either under or over the long sleeve riding jersey.
Riding boots.
Shin and knee protectors, inside the boot leg and under your riding pants.
Riding gloves.
Chest protector with shoulder protection.
Hand guards on the bike.

Let me know if you need any help deciding what gear to buy if you are missing something.

The “LOST TRAIL” Dual Sport Ride Check List.

Check every nut and bolt on your bike to make sure it’s there and tight….Put locktite on any that tend to loosen up…..Like the foot peg bolts on XR650Rs.

Make sure all the wheel spokes are tight and safety wire or tie wrap them where they cross each other…..They can still break but won’t get caught up in the chain or brakes.

Check your wheel bearings.

Be sure to be starting with new, or nearly new tires….No excuses no exceptions, just a little rain on a clay road and you will be in trouble with worn tires.

Put slime in both tires….Follow the instructions carefully.

When you are changing tires… Be sure to use a rim lock up front….When you get a front flat we’ll be changing it right away but a rim lock can prevent tearing out the valve stem while you are getting stopped.….On the back I use two rim locks and often run longer distances before stopping to fix it.

Set tire pressure to 22psi up front and 18psi in the rear….We can adjust it from there if we need to.

Be sure your sprockets, chain and brakes are correctly adjusted and can go the distance anticipated without wearing out.

Start with a fresh clean oiled air filter….Filter skins are a great idea. Carry a spare filter or Filter Skin all oiled up and ready to go….If you use any No Toil or other oils with alcohol in them, be sure to let your filter dry and air out for at least an hour before you pack it into an airtight plastic bag….I had a spare filter totally fall apart in the bag because I didn’t do this.

I suggest at least stock sprocket sizes but prefer to see your bike geared taller for this kind of riding…Change the countershaft sprocket for one tooth larger…It lowers the cruising revs, increased the top end and reduces fuel consumption….We won’t be needing to ride in first gear anywhere.

Run the largest gas tank you can get…..My 650 gets about 140 miles per tank before I have to lay it over for reserve….

Check the cable adjustment for all the controls.

Check the fork seals, countershaft seal and shifter shaft seal to be sure they aren’t leaking.

Make sure your suspension is not set too stiff….It’ll wear you out in no time.

Put a guard over your headlight. Steve Jr. and I had two broken headlights on one ride….That gets expensive.

Things to carry along :

An 80 or 100oz hydration & backpack combo unit with a big mouth bladder that lets you fill it with ice and liquid…I like to use Gatorade, I get less cramping than when I use just water….We’ll get ice and liquids at the gas stops.

In my back pack I carry …
A couple of protein bars that withstand heat.
Two 300 mm tire irons wrapped in old gloves.
A good quality bicycle tire pump.
A spare set of reading glasses.
A spare spark plug.
Spare batteries for my GPS.
My cell phone.
Matches.
Mountain money in a Zip Loc bag.
Enough ear plugs for a new pair everyday.

A front fender bag works well to carry….
A new front tube.
An extra clutch and brake lever.
A spare clutch perch.
A tube repair kit….Check the glue and patches are still useable.
A wad of “Quick Metal” epoxy putty for patching engine cases.

A rear fender bag carries….
My tools…..Use these tools for all maintenance work prior to the ride…Those big wrenches in the shiny Snap On box at home won’t help out where we’ll be.
A spare chain master link.
A tow strap.
A siphon hose.
A spare clutch cable.
Spare throttle cables
Two extra massive tie wraps ( AC duct size)
A pair of old riding gloves for dirty repair work.
A miniature flashlight.

My old Malcolm Smith Fanny Pack carries:
A clean pair of no fog, clear lens, goggles for cloudy days or night riding ( I use photo tint no fogs in the sun) .
A Leatherman for use on anything.
A small Mag Lite flashlight.
Another spare pair of reading glasses.
Maps.
My camera.

My riding pants get…
My wallet in the right front leg pocket.

My ears get….
Soft silicone ear putty earplugs available at any drug store….I find I’m a lot less tired when the wind noise is eliminated….I strongly recommend them….I’ve tried all types and these work the best.

My hands get….
A pair of cheap cotton gloves under my riding gloves to help kill the bar buzz and stop any blisters….

General Info Stuff

Cell phones don’t work well in the West Texas-Big Bend area….Cingular is about the best coverage available….

Bring cash for all your needs….ATM’s are rare.

Paying for everything by cash or check is actually easier and safer..

Plan on having smaller bills available…..

If you have GPS and can use it….Bring it.

I'm leaving in a few hours, after lunch. Today will just be an easy goof off day. May ride some of the single track around the state park.

My uncle wanted me to ask you about Calvin Klein (sp?). He said Calvin took him to his first enduro 300 years ago.

Hey, I'll be the first to get my hands on his Sweet Cheeks. If I'm lucky I'll be able to straddle them on some desolate back county road.
You guy's are just plain sick. I want to know what your wife's think about all these DS trips you all have been going on. Give me some tips cause I want to go but I still need to take her to vegas this summer before I can do anymore extended rides.;-)

Speaking for myself....My wife says I'm a much nicer guy after I've been riding.....

Lesson #1.

It doesn't matter if you have a broken leg when you come home from a ride...The first thing you do is let her know how much fun you had and how much you missed her, "being with the guys is great but it just makes me realize how much I love being married to you, darling."

Lesson #2.

It doesn't matter how tired you are always make a big deal of " How about I take you out for dinner tonight, darling. You must be going crazy cooped up here with the kids, or dogs or Inlaws or Outlaws, or whoever.

Lesson #3.

Always make a point of telling her about the trip, show her the pics and make a big deal of how much fun she would have had if she'd come along.....Don't worry, she propably will never want to join us......Mostly they just need to know they can....

Lesson #4.

Don't let your wife read all you emails and forums!!!!

This will be my 43rd year riding, I'll save the rest of the lessons for some time over a beer.

OH yes....I ALMOST FOGOT.....Most important lesson of all, take no notice of any suggestions Teeds may make....He's not qualified to advise here!!!!

Promises, promises; You've got a start.

Diane & I are leaving in a few days for Tennessee & on the World Enduro in New York. Then New England some where, she has never been there. In Nov. we are going to New Zealand to the 6-Days for almost 3 weeks.

Work on it & lets :rider:

This is what I'm planning on packing as far as clothing goes. Am I forgeting anything? Any suggestions? To much? Not enough? If we are using this as a trial Mexico run do I need more stuff?

In my pack
5 pair undies (no thongs)
5 pair socks
I could reduce these to 2 pair of each and plan to hand wash in the tub or sink but 3 pair won't take up that much more room.
2 pair riding pants
2 jerseys
rain jacket
2 pair nylon pants with zip off legs
2 pair t-shirts (probably synthetic quick dry type of fabric)
Sandals
hat (cause I'm bald and am sensitive to the sun)
Deodorant
toothbrush and toothpaste
soap

This is what I currently have in my MSR Toolbag around my waist. I'm missing a 25mm for my rear wheel, a chain tool and a clutch perch but should have those by August. Anything else for the XR? Most of this was put together when I giot the KLR so I know I won't need some of it for the XR but others may. I decided to carry the sockets cause they are smaller and easier to deal with but I still have the open ended wrenches as well. Looking for the wisdom of the group in helping me with selection on some of this stuff.

Patches & glue
zip ties of various sizes
2 paper shop towels
air gauge
3 motion pro 8" tire irons
about 20 fee of electrical wire
new spark plug
little bit of electrical tape
19, 18 deep, 17, 15, 13,12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 sockets
1/4" to 3/8" socket adapter
1/4" drive ratchet
1/4" extension
6, 5, 4, 3 allen sockets
tube of Quicksteel

520V chain link
small tube of oil
multi tool with scissors, screwdrivers, and can opener keychain size
Phillips and flat screwdriver bits work with ratchet

Golf pencil
Sharpie
24/22 box wrench
Small pencil type screwdriver
mag light
circlip pliers
14/15, 13/12, 11/10, 9/8, 7/6 combo wrenches

Tool for Sidi boots
Spare boot parts for ankle hinges

SOG multiplier

Fender bag
21" tube
clutch and brake lever
clutch cable

I'm debating bringing the camera. Its bulky, heavy, and batteries are an issue. I may be able to borrow one.

Welcome to the fray. You will enjoy it here.

Chris:

First off ... have faith on your question on the XR site ... Someone will jump in and give you a difinitive answer once the folks in Kalifornia wake up.

Second ... I assume you are attempting to carry all the stuff you plan on taking to Mexico. Correct? I am not planning on taking near that much stuff on the August ride ... for that matter, I am not planning that much gear for the Mexico ride, but that is the topic for another thread.

Actually you need a 27 for your rear axle. Steve and I both have one. If you want to carry your own, get a combination wrench from Northern Tool or the like and cut off the open end wrench end with a gas axe.

And yes...you forgot swim trunks.

I bet you can reduce the number of sockets and wrenches too. Do a full maintenance and keep track of what tools you use...you'll find that most stuff is 8, 10, 12, 13, 14mm. Allens are 5, 6, and 8. Don't forget spark plug socket. I don't know XR-R but I have a special socket for the WR. That plug is DEEP in the head.

Reservations made for Fri. & Sat. at the appropriate places...now all I need to do is decide whether to take the HP2 or the DRZ. The seat on the HP2 is a butt-load (literally) more comfortable  but I only have about 110-120 mile fuel range. On the other hand, the DRZ wil easily make 150-175 miles on a tank-full but the seat is pretty much a torture rack :help: after 3 or 4 hours.

I was looking the other day, and it turns out auto zone can order just about any size or shape headlight you can imagine, of the plastic variety. And they have the socket in the back for halogen bulbs. Not sure how long it takes to get them once ordered though. I ordered one for the wifes bike but cancelled it, her electrical system is 6 volt, so it was a mute issue of upgrading to a brighter light.

Hope this helps ,

The Lost Trail is 135 miles gas stop to gas stop ...

An H2 will not go that far? Wow ... ditto on the love to see it ... :trust:

That will be the longest run Skinny has to deal with.

FYI Skinny, assuming you meet us at Terlingua Ranch ... are you leaving a ride there? You might consider leaving a ride in Alpine and riding the bike from there to the Ranch. I seem to remember that you are leaving us at noon on Sunday which will be in Van Horn or thereabouts ... If you do ride down on 118 from Alpine, you will need to head on down to Study Butte an fill up before backtracking to the ranch. There is no fuel available at the ranch and the first leg from there will be stretching the limits on our tanks, much less you with 100 or so miles of 118 behind you.

I'm trying to figure it out ...

Skinny ... Have you got a room at Terlingua Ranch? If not, why don't you bunk with Matt.

Skinny ... as far as where we are going to be ... I would guess that we will be on the road (gravel) by 7:00 AM on Sunday and heading into Presidio. We should be back on the road and heading towards Candelaria by 8:00 AM which has us hitting the end of the asphalt by 9:00 AM. My best guess would be for you to head north up to Marfa through Pinto Canyon and then head south via 169 through Casa Piedra. This would minimize your backtracking ... it can get lonely out there though ... You could backtrack as well, but the asphalt is a bit boring ...

I have a room at Terlingua Ranch, but I may have a local riding partner with me. I won't know for another day or 2, but if he decides not to come, I'll be alone...I keep seeing reference to "the big hill" in some of the other posts... where is it on the Sunday ride??? ...I've been on the Casa Piedras road, and it's not interesting enough for me to ride a 2nd time as opposed to riding Hwy 170, which is lot's of fun, even on a dirt bike. If I bail out at Pinto Canyon, I'll probably ride north to the pavement, turn around and reverse the ride back to Terlingua Ranch.

The hill is about 4~5 miles beyond Candelaria. Heading north it is a downhill.

It was in pretty bad shape the last time we rode it which was last February. It is soft and steep, not to mention 150~200 feet tall. Not impossible, just a challenge.

What is your range on your DRZ? ...
It is 52 miles one way from the gas station in Presidio and "the hill" and it is 56 miles from the gas station to the pavement at the end of FM2810.

Those pictures were taken in Oct. 03 during the 2nd worst flood in Park history. They put a high water mark on the bathrooms at Santa Elena, which was about 7 ft. in that area....It really wasn't that much fun, especially since some of the River Road was about 3 ft. deep in flood water, but other than needing a snorkel, it was kinda neat...

You Golf? That just totally blew my image of you...

I've been known to partake in a little pasture pool at times.

And he talks about it all the time !!!!

That's because we passed a golf course that has watch out for snakes signs...how cool is that.

Chris....Had you considered that maybe Gary has a motorcycle in the bedroom, not a bed in the garage?

Must have been the lack of air conditioning in the garage. I don't think that would fly at my house.

I think it was Sir Winston Churchill, that summed it up best for me, " Golf is a walk through a perfectly wonderful garden, spoiled by a little white ball...."

Dude...you have a bunk bed in your garage...that's awsome!!! I thought I was cool with my putting green and wireless internet.

Actually it's the first floor of my beach house....

Tiled, A/C, bathroom, AND WiFi !!

Local residents ...

I counted six of them ...

Two white tail bucks in velvet, four or five doe and two fawn, numerous jack rabbits, so many hawks I lost count ... oh yea, and ONE car ...

All of that on one 26 mile section of gravel road. It is a new section that Steve and I have been talking about. It is going to be fun.

You will be so far out in the sticks that they run the telephone wires on top of the fence posts. :-P

Start praying for :sun: ... it is wet down there ...

OK....

How about pray for a cloudy week-end...

Time to get new pics. :-P

The jury is still out. I placed them too far back on the seat. Other than that they seem to do their job. I am wondering if bottles would help. I used rolled up foam knee pads from HD. They work, but they are a bit smaller in diameter and the top of the roll sits even with the seat before you sit on the pads. I thinking there would be a bit more support if the pad was a bit larger in diameter. I may bring bottles and try them.

I may just spring for a DB seat ... I have spent enough money on the bike lately though ... :(

McRider......

I think you will be fine...I have a $40 evaporative cooling vest that I am going to bring. It will be GREAT in the super low humidity. Combined with an Under Armour Heat shirt, you will actually be COOL for a few hours and then hope to refresh the vest with some H20 further down the trail.:trust:
