View Full Version : July 22nd Fannin County DS ride

This ride will start in Bonham, and head East towards Paris. This will not entirely be the same ride as has been done in the past, so if you've made a Fannin county ride you can still come out and ride a mostly new route that will go a little farther east than the others.

Stands up at 8:00 A.M. at the McDonalds at the intersection of HWY 82 and HWY 78. Coords are... N33 36.070 W96 10.562

There is a big grocery store parking lot next door that might be good to park a trailer at if anybody needs to do that. I've never done that or asked if I could do that but I don't think any body would mind. Come to think of it the grocery store may be closed.

So far those going are:

Teeds ?

At this point it depends on my thumb. I would like to make it for sure. After the ride on the 22nd, that will be it until the Lost Trail. I have more than a few things I have to do, to get El Puerco :lol2: ready for the big trip.

In the spirit of trashing a thread at the earliest possible moment . . . :trust:

I saw your post on the XR site . . . but have been too busy to answer . . . I have a manual for the bike.

If you beg nicely, or search in the recent past, you can get someone on the site to put up a scanned copy for you to download. Someone was asking about one just a week or so ago and someone posted a link to their copy on an ftp site. It might still be up.

I have a brand new set of tires that I don't want to use until August since the lost loop will probably require fairly new tires at the start.

Juts let me know, I'll still keep you on the go list.

Yeah I'm pretty much doing the same thing....staying local on rides... spending some time camping with the family...and a little riding vacation with my wife. Speaking of we may be in the Austin area towards the end of the month.

I've always enjoyed exploring the back roads in Fannin county. I never have a specific route planned and just see what I can get myself into.

This ride sounds like a good time. I'll keep an eye on the thread to see if it is a go as the date approaches. I'd love to tag along if so.

Thanks!

This might be a good reason to knock the mold release compound off a new set of tires before I go to colorado.

I parked my 06 Husky TE 610 next to a bike that looked just like oldbmw's at the Monday night Black Crowes concert in Austin.

Was that any of y'all?

Oh yeah,

I have Friday the 21st off and am planning on showing up for this ride!!
Do I need to register or call anyone? :rider:

Coming from the Austin area? That's a long way for a day ride, but your more than welcome. The Bonham state park is nice and usually not very crowded if you want to camp. I can't really recommend anything in Bonham as far as accomodations. Sherman or McKinney both are about 30 minutes away from Bonham and would offer better places to stay.

Cool, I'm thinking I'm gonna carry most of what I'm gonna carry on the lost loop ride just to make sure it all works out.

My top three tips for not crashing

1. Head up, throttle on.
2. If you feel scared or it looks like your gonna crash...give it more gas
3. Don't crash.

If you don't already have a spare clutch lever order two when you replace yours and cary it with you..along with a spare clutch cable.

You forgot to include your bill!

This is a freebie...if he doesn't crash in the next few weeks we will chalk it up to my advise and I'll start charging. I guess you can say McLeod is my crash test...well you know what I mean. :lol2:

I just don't have the extra cash to put together a kit for it right now. Besides I think I would prefer an old DR650 or XR650L so I can put the miles on them and not worry about the high maintenance on the KTM. The KTM does so well off-road adding that extra stuff just seems wrong. Actually I never should have gotten rid of the KTM Adventure 640 I had. Either that or I sell the Scorpion and pick up a WeeStrom. I could commute on it and I know I can take it on anything except tight singletrack with no issues. It might also be fun to take a Triumph Scrambler on this type of ride. I'll keep dreaming for now.

Thanks for the reply and camping information. I have had a change of plans, and will not be attending. It turns out I will be out around Leakey and Utopia from Thurs-Sat.(July20-22)

Y'all have fun, and post a ride report when you are done. :rider:

Bummer...I wanted tio chack out that Husky.

Hi/lo beam, horn, brake light and license plate light is all you need to buy. I bet it could all be had for under $100. I'll give you a set of my old DOT tires so you can pass inspection...but your right about maintanence...but just for rides like this it sure would be fun. The guy I sold my DR to is planning to sell it and his KDX to buy a DRZ I think. :trust:

The KTM 400MXC model has no lights at all in stock form so it would be a little more. I also think I might have fun with the paperwork since it was bought in Lousiana originally and they don't title dirt bikes. I have the purchase papers from the original owner but it does add a little complexity.

Do you have the MSO? If so, you should not have a problem. ta2240 just plated his WR last fall. We should get him to write a step by step procedure ... He has answered many of the points multiple times and all of the points at least once, but I don't think it is in the same place ...

I will be converting my '01 400MXC this fall, once I get back from the August and Labor Day rides.

I do not thing the MXC has a lighting coil. You would be better off starting with an EXC.
I have an 02 520 EXC used for dual sport, hare scrambles & enduro. It works great. I've added a mirror, a KTM break light switch, a used horn & high beam wiring (the bulb is there). There is a form for the safety inspector to fill out to get a license plate. I got the form from Cycle Shack North in Conroe.

You might want a larger MXC gas tank or a smaller rear sprocket.

Eveything I have seen about the conversion says that the MXC has the lighting coil and the wiring. Obviously I don't know for sure, as I have not done the conversion.

The MXC tank is the way to go. Didn't the '02 come with it? My '01 did.

Yes the MXC does have the lighting coil and there are after market kits and one from KTM. I do have the 300 EXC as well but I think I might sell it and start looking for an old Dual Sport again. My criteria for a dual sport is something I can still commute on. With my commute that means bigger is better and low maintenance is even better.
