I might make it, if the forest is closed I know a spot about 35 minutes to your south east that would make an excellent training area. Has forest trails, open grass field trails, hills, and a few sandy sections. Places to cool off in the shade.....etc etc.....And mud, if you are so inclined. But you can easily ride around any of the bad spots until you feel confident enough to go where you want to go. I am using it as a confidence builder for the wife's riding skills.
Wanna see? Google Earth Crosby Texas, find Ulric Lane and FM 2100, go to the end of Ulric, Cross under the Railroad Tressel and follow the trails. The trees cover most of the forest trails though, but it's nice to be able to ride in the shade . Fuel water and food are never more than 15 minutes away in this place. It's where I grew up riding.
Oh, and if you trailer in, the Guy at the end of Ulric will let you park at his house and keep an eye on your stuff for 5 bucks, plus sometimes he runs a snackbar at the trail head.

Hmmmm, I may be interested.
I know the 3rd round of the Trail Riders of Houston Family Enduro series is on july 23 and the TCEC Texas Championship Enduro Circuit Race is on August 27 up in the National Forest. There will surely be race arrows marking a course in place in the area and possibly people working the trails in preperation of the race coming and taking down stuff from the previous race.
This said, I dont think there will be any problem riding the area. You just need to make sure you know where you are going and where you want to be. If you follow the race signage, you may not be going where you want to. :) Obvioius, but always a good idea to mention is to bring pleanty of water and have a map of the area and dont ride alone. etc etc etc. :)

The dirt day is still scheduled. We'll have to see what happens with weather, trail closures, and participants.

It seems they are putting up arrows in the national forest this weekend for the upcoming Caney Creek Enduro on the 27th. I am not positive I can go this weekend, but if yall do go, stick to what is on the map and watch out for workers on the trail. I am going to try to go though. :)

Don't know if it will work out but Mopower and I might be able to make it. Seems I forgot I have vacation scheduled for this weekend. Now all I have to do is talk the wife into letting me borrow her truck this weekend or get Mopowers truck out of the shop and get a couple new tires for the trailer and service my bike.
Any idea yet which trail head and when you are going to be there? I'll have to see how things go with the trucks and trailer but we might be able to make it for a ride.

I'm gonna try to be at the trail head off of 215 on the west side at 9:00 am, unless somebody knows a better starting point on the west side.

That'd be great, Bryan!! I wouldnt worry about taking it easy, this is gonnna be a pretty laid back kinda ride. I'm more worried about Mopower - He's probably gonna get real bored waitin for the old guys...;-)

Heck he will just run ahead, take a break waiting on us and be ready to go again when we get there. He never seems to be as tired after a day in the woods as I am, I think it has to do with the fact I never get to sit and wait on him any more. :rider:

Come on out. :dude: You'll have to get James to bring his red machine out also.
You don't have to worry we will get your bike home if you have any problem with it. :trust: Looks like we are going to have to find you some real single track. Most of the forest will look like a freeway :eek2: after a little single track. :rider:
Now I've got to get out in the garage in the morning after work and get my scooter ready to go. Haven't had a chance to ride since the first of the year due to injury so this will be a tune up for me.

If the Forest is closed we could probably hit Outlaw Trax, depending on how much of the "R" stuff fell and closed the forest. Outlaw is only a hop, skip and a jump from the West Trail Heads.

Cool. I'll post tomorrow afternoon re: SHNF Trail status. We can make the decision then to go to Outlaw Trax. How much to get into OT?

$15.00 per rider.
For the forest, do you have the $8.00 off-highway decal or does your bike have current license and inspection sticker? I've got to get the decal but haven't heard where they are available from. Heard at one time the Ranger Station was going to have them but I have never checked into it.

Dang. I'd forgotten about the decal. Just got off the phone with the ranger station and Academy - no dice at either. (The trails are open, for what thats worth). Looks like the only option to get the decal is to call
(512) 389-8917 and purchase by credit card. Here's the link to the TPWD Press Release on the decals:
TPWD Press Release (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/releases/?req=20060130c)
In as much as it's already Thursday, and it's unlikely we'll receive the stickers by Saturday, should we go ahead and make Outlaw Trax the destination?
How technical is OT? - Im gonna be slow, & will likely have a dirt rookie with me. Is there enough there that we can get warmed up before jumping into goat trail territory?

Outlaw has some technical parts of trail but there are easier ways around them. Outlaw has basically two trail loops. The blue loop (Easy loop, quad loop), and the Red loop (Iron man loop). Heres a gps map of the trails, unfortunatly it is a little old. (The trails have since been reversed)
http://www.msra-cycle.org/OutlawGPSMap.jpg
The blue loop is the perfect trail for first time riders. No technical sections but lots of twists and turns. Outlaw also has a motocross track but it is nothing like three palms or anything. We also have a Junior motosross track and a junior trail system right behind the camp.

Like Alex said, Outlaw has what you are looking for. You can make it as technical as you want or don't want.
I'm all for making Outlaw the destination if that is ok with everyone else. Give it some thought and we can come up with a meeting site and then head out there.
A little additional info about Outlaw:
Kids Trails are a great warm-up loop for trails or either of the MX tracks can do the same. We have a short drag strip for getting the feel of a little speed. The Blue Loop is a great step up to a little more technical sections and there are a few "Fire Roads" that cross the property to help keep it from getting too technical. The Red Loop can be used and like Alex said the harder technical sections have spurs that bypass the harder parts. All trails are one way so you don't have to worry about on coming traffic and you don't have to worry about the kwadtard crowd. The quads at Outlaw are few but each knows the rules of the property. If you get to the point you want to really push the envelope there is usually several "FAST" riders that are willing to help you see the other side of riding in the dirt.
The gate will be locked when we get there and we will relock it after we enter so everyone will need to be there together or make arrangements for us to come open the gate.
The last report I had on the trail condition at Outlaw was good but that was a few days ago. We can expect some dust but that would be the same for where ever we decide to ride. And with it being private property, no decal required.
The trails will also be KLR friendly so Bryan can still attend.

How about at the Farris Cemetery on FM 1791. This will be right at the cut off (FS 209) to Outlaw Trax.
From Houston/The Woodlands/Conroe:
Take I-45 North to FM 1375 (New Waverly). Go left (west) on FM 1375 to Hwy 149. Go right (north) on Hwy 149 around to FM 1791. Go right (north) on 1791. Go approx 4.4 miles north on FM 1791 to Farris Cemetery which is just past Forest Service 209.
From Montgomery:
Take Hwy 149 North approx. 13 miles to FM 1791. Go right (North) on 1791.
Go approx 4.4 miles north on FM 1791 to Farris Cemetery which is just past Forest Service 209.
From Dallas/Huntsville:
Take I-45 South to Hwy 30 in Huntsville. Go right (west) to FM 1791. Go left (south) on FM 1791. Go south on FM 1791 to the Farris Cemetery which will be on your right just before Forest Service 209. FS 209 is the first right after the cemetery (approx. 1/4 mile after cemetery).
From Richards/Anderson:
Take Hwy 149 South to FM 1791. Go left (North) on FM 1791. Go approx 4.4 miles north on FM 1791 to Farris Cemetery which is just past Forest Service 209.
Also could I get a count of the riders so I can give the property owner a heads up to our plans? I just think it would be the courteous thing to do to let him know how many new faces he will see out there.

We will not be riding the trails that will be used in the enduro. The enduro will be held in the Sam Houston National Forest. We will be riding Outlaw Trax which is just up the road. TRH will be in the National Forest this weekend working on the enduro trails.
The meeting time? Between 08:30 and 09:00 at the Farris Cemetery.
Riding time? Hard to say with the summer heat and humidity. I would say we would be there till 4 or 5, maybe a little longer.

I will have a 5 gallon water jug with me and an ice chest that you are welcome to use to hold what ever you may need to keep cold. With the heat the way it is I don't think I will be bringing the grill so it will be sandwiches for my crew at lunch. If you want to grill, bring your own on this trip.
I will also have an EZ UP to help provide a little extra shade. If you are trailering or trucking your ride(s) be sure and add a lawn chair to your gear.

We had to change destinations due to none of us have the State Off-Road decals. And since they would expire at the end of the month there wasn't much need in having them over-nighted. Sorry for the mix up,
