I was going to try to keep Kelly's situation separate from the Pie Run reports. Kelly was leading a ride of about 10 ZRX riders when they surprised a bunch of feasting buzzards, one of which took off directly at Kelly. The guy riding behind him said that they were both on the brakes but Kelly's brake light went out on impact. His bike then went off the road and hit a barbed wire fence. Careflight took him to Hillcrest Hospital in Waco.

The injuries appear to be hand fracture, neck lacerations, and a concussion. They are most concerned about the concussion since a quick CT scan showed no internal injuries. They intend to re-evaluate in the morning since he has been disoriented the whole time.

Allison (veryquick on here) is Kelly's wife and is with him now. She convinced the staff to give him something for the pain and to relax him, something which Kelly had refused up to that time.

Kelly and Allison are both nurses in the medical profession (met in the service). They have a young son, Reilly, who is probably staying with grandparents.

Anyway, prayers needed to make sure his condition improves and they can treat whatever is needed.

-------

An aside, bike condition is bad - lots of front end damage. Ricky intends to go get it tommorrow (Sunday). Bike future can wait until Kelly is home and improving.

ZRXOA thread should have the most up-to-date info:

Kelly and Allison are in our prayers. Please let us know if they need anything as we are only 30 minutes from Waco.

I had intended to ride down with Kelly, but work (medical profession also) kept me in town. I posted to the ZRX forum jokingly that had I made the ride, I might have slowed him down enough to miss the buzzard flock.;-) Prayers and best wished are being sent by the truckload.

I'm sorry to hear that. Prayers sent.

Keep us posted, Chuck.

Sorry to hear that, Kelly and Allison both are in our prayers...

If they need anything at all feel free to let Jamie and I know.

Oh man, that sucks....I'm glad to hear there wasn't anything else real major....sounds like he's going to be hurtin' in the morning....I hope they keep the morphine a-flowin'.

The whole FWRex fam has prayers coming from Burleson :zen:

Yes, please keep us updated Chuck! Let us know if there's anything the TWTex family can do!

I was just talking with Kelly last week about the Hutto ride. I myself found out about it when I got home this evening. What happened is extremely rare. I'm glad his gear kept him for being hurt further.

My prayers and thoughts are with him and his family.

My dad and step-mom live in Waco. They are riders and CMA members, and my dad is a minister. If Allison needs to stay a few more days, they have a huge house with a very private spare room she could probably use. Please PM me or e-mail cyclecats [at] Yahoo to get contact info for my dad if needed.

I was unable to get hold of Allison via her cell phone, so I checked with the hospital & they indicated that Kelly was released this morning just before 11:00. So they should be on the way home.

You can get a few details about the incident by reading through the ZRXOA thread. It looks like it happened a few miles south of Cranfills Gap (I heard 8 miles and a 20 mile guess). Kelly got a lot of help from his riding buddies - most were amazed that he didn't suffer more injuries.

I am hoping that Allison will check in & let us know how he is doing. Eventually, Kelly should fill in all the details.

Once he recovers and gets his bike replaced or running, I figure the ZRX guys will give him a hard time (not to mention whatever support he needs)...

Now that we know he is relatively OK, let's not let them get ahead of us here at TWT. I nominate Kelly for a new screen name.... Buzzard.

 Whaaaaaaat! No way. That'd never happen from a ZRX owner. We're way to classy for that kinda redderick. BTW. I called 1st dibs on all the ZRX part on the scene. "I kid, I kid..."

I still have an active account at the ZRXOA.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Glad it ain't worse.
I'll put them at topof prayer list.

one of my riding fears here in central Texas is hitting a turkey buzzard at hight speed. My friend Danny Grayson seems to have a magnet in his helmet that attracts buzzards. I dont recall how many near misses I have seen him have. he also seems to attract other birds as well, dont know what that is all about. I hope your better Kelly and dont let people pull your leg about wearing a buzzard for a hat either.

I just got off the phone with Ricky. He can't post from work so he asked me to.

Kelly and Alison are indeed at home. They're both very tired so we'll just respect their privacy a little longer. Kelly had another CT scan with good results. He does have a scaphoid fracture on his left wrist which will require further analysis by an Othopedic specialist mostly because these type fractures can cause arthritic problems as they are very prone to healing incorrectly. As far as his head injury goes, he's still a little "whacked". The way Ricky described it to me could be interpretted as amnesia like behavior. He knows who his immediate family are, but he doesn't know that he rides motorcycles or for that matter anything else. The doctor indicated that his head condition should clear up in a week. Ricky also told me that Alison said Kelly will say totally sensless off the wall things which are a little humerous. I'm sure these stories will make for a heck of a good time at a wrenchin' party.

Anyway, Ricky will be driving down to get Kelly's REX tonight or tomorrow. Kelly had full coverage on it so he should be in good shape.

GO KELLY GO! Get better fast...

So maybe Alison could help him to remember that he DOES like to vacuum? :trust:

Well, I didn't want to be the first to recommend something similar:

She should get the video camera out and start recording some of that as he probably will not remember this behavior later on.
