My Dad sent me this e-mail.

A guy who lives at Lake Conroe (50 miles north of Houston) saw a ball bouncing around kind of strange in the lake and went to investigate.

It turned out to be a flathead catfish who had obviously tried to swallow a basketball which became stuck in its mouth!!

The fish was totally exhausted from trying to dive, but unable to because the ball would always bring him back up to the surface. The guy tried numerous times to get the ball out, but was unsuccessful. He finally had his wife cut the ball in order to deflate it and release the hungry catfish.

You probably wouldn't have believed this,

if you hadn't seen the following pictures...

What's odd is he didn't filet that fish! Man, that there is dinner! Not much better eatin'. He'd have wound up in my ice chest for sure.

Now, then, basket balls for bait? I've never thought of that, but it just might work...

There's not much sport in catching an exhausted fish with a ball stuck in its mouth. On the other hand I feel like eating fish now.:eat:

Sport? Well, not much sport in runnin' trot lines, either, but they taste just as good as if you used a rod and reel. :lol2:

Good stuff, it is amazing what a catfish will eat. I need to buy some small red key chain size basketballs and use them for lures.:lol2:

So tell me again,
why do folks spend all kinds of money on fancy lures and stuff?

Yes, these photographs are real, taken at Sandalwood Lake in Kansas on 28 May 2004.
