View Full Version : Kurt goes to Federal Prison - almost
I somehow had lost Leigh’s Social Security Card needed to get her learner’s permit from DPS. They require an actual card despite having a certified birth certificate, so off I went to the local Social Security office. It’s pouring down rain, the nearest parking is 500 yards away and people are standing outside the door in the rain. Not a good sign.
When I entered the building, I was immediately accosted by the security geek who told me I must take my coffee outside. I step outside and place the cup against the wall behind a trash can out of sight. Barney comes out and says I have to take it to my vehicle. He automatically gets removed from my Christmas card list. After returning from my car over ¼ mile away, I re-enter the building and my cell phone rings. I answer the call and Barney is back in my face, spittle flying, interrupting my call and telling me I have to leave the building to if my cell phone is turned on. I give him a look, but turn the phone to vibrate. I am now six feet inside the front door. As I gaze upon the sea of humanity (50-60 people) waiting on the two clerks, I go to the computer that generates a number. My lucky number is 105. After half an hour, they call the first number…. 73……
At this point, I decided to do some investigation in the form of a flyer and find that you must appear in person to get a replacement card, so I’m just screwed. I go back to Barney and ask generally how fast the line moves and he replies, “I have no idea”. I voice my assumption that I probably have at least an hour in which to accomplish something today before returning. Barney replies, “Not my problem, do what you want”. Having had enough of Barney, and having depleted my 15 minutes of good humor, I can’t help myself. I ask him if a tiny (bleeeep!), and a lack of personality is required to be a federal security guard. Proving that the guilty dog barks first, He stands up, his face turns purple and he threatens to ban me for life from the building. I smile and tell him that is the best thing I’ve heard all day, please make it happen immediately. He still had not picked his jaw up when I left. I think I’ll try again after lunch. :lol2:

You don't HAVE to apply for a new card in your home town. I use a small town office. I frequently go in and am the only one in the whole office. I still have to go to a computer to get the number, but they usually call it immediately. ;-)
This is in Geoergetown, It doesn't get much smaller.

Yup, that seems to be how federal buildings work, at least with the one I have been in. They don't allow food/drinks and cell phones are to be left in your vehicle (at least, that was the rules at the one I went to).
I was happy to oblige since it was going to be my only visit to the building, no biggie.

You may get angrier when they tell you the BC isn't enough. You might be better off letting Leigh go in person because I have made several attemps to replace my daughters, went in armed with school records, doctor bills, birth certificates and a letter from the school and still haven't gotten it. Seems some "undocumented workers" are trying to fool the system and get fake cards with phony birth certificates. You can go on line and get the form and any info you might need.

True story -
My dad died 4 years ago and I'm the executor so I'm clearing up all final business. Credit Union calls and says I owe them $800 because Social Security Administration debited Credit Union for the last monthly payment my dad was alive.
I go to the office in Dallas (wait an hour in their nasty lobby) and speak w/ a supervisor who is nice enough. She says my dad is ineligible for last payment since he died on the 30th. Apparently you have to live the WHOLE month to get that monthly payment. I tell her the bills don't stop for that month (water, electric, food) and she says, "yeah we get that complaint a lot".
Repeat after me, "The Federal Govt. is NOT your friend"! :angryfire

Heck, just do what the illegals do, buy one in a flea market. They let you carry your coffee in and let your cell phone ring.

On the contrary-come to Temple. There's a SS office just down the street from me.

He probably thought you were going to make a bomb out of your coffee and cell phone.
Went thru that drill w/grandson last summer.... all of about 10 min in the SSA office in Lufkin... no sweat about cell fone... all four of us in the family group had one... no waiting at all... but... since I live near Livingston, the 50+ mile drive up there has to be considered a PIA because a 16 year old boy lost his SSACard.

Oh NO, I have to have 5 new ones, Mine is so fragile, from wear over the years, and now with the four new kids name change, we are waiting on new birth certificates from the State of California. Guess I better start preparing now, attorney doing the adoption said the BCs take about six months. Kurt, were you in uniform? Barney must be of the same caliber as TSA, I had one of them push me out of the way in line at Walmart the other day, I reminded him he had no authority in Walmart, and that a strip search was about to take place. This was all while I had my left arm in a cast, real great public relations for them.
Kurt, were you in uniform?
No, just shorts and t-shirt type stuff. I wouldn't have engaged to that degree if I had been in uniform.

Weird. Mine didn't take very long at all. In Houston too. I had to change the name on my SS Card after I got naturalized.

I was in the same situation last spring, except I had to go to the office in Houston. I was really dreading that, but it actually went very well. Only waited about 15 minutes. My daughter had her BC, School ID, and something else and they didn't even want to see the something else. The security guard in there was actually helpful. I was really expecting it to be bad, guess we were lucky.

Why was that? Did you request a change?

My legal name, up until Aug '01 (when I was naturalized) didn't include "Jesse." My mom named me Jesse and everybody knew me by Jesse but all my legal documents had my Chinese name, Hann Huang.
It wasn't until I legally got it changed while I was naturalized that I was officially Jesse Huang. Then I had to go through the process of updating all of my stuff to say Jesse Huang. Background checks for firearms purchases are fun.
Whenever I get junk mail, Jesse Huang gets a copy and so does Hann Huang.

:tab If only the government were as efficient as the junk mailers and spammers...
:tab This is just one more of a never ending string of similar stories that make me wonder how anyone can take the government serious
:tab I got a buzz from Dad in law this afternoon. During the conversation he mentions that he read something about the Fed agency in California that deals with Food Stamps advertising on Spanish radio stations how the illegals needed to do their paperwork to get food stamps and that it would not affect any future immigration attempts. He thought I should be shocked. I wasn't. Disgusted? You betcha!!

Just a simple note on beating the Goverment at their own game.
IF you lose your wallet/Purse with ident inside you are now OFFICIALLY an UNSUB(unknown Subject) and removed from the land of the living and sent straight to buearacratic limbo!
Need a DL? that requires 3 to 5 types of ID Preferably one has a photo. Need a SS card that requires 3 types of ID
Need a Birth Certificate? WWWWEEeeeelllll you SHOULD be able to walk right in and buy one for anybody for a few dollars.
In this process since you have NOTHING(remeber stolen/lost wallet/purse) You can start the ball rolling with a notarized letter and a witness stating on said letter that you are you,,,,
OR
Just make Xerox Copies of ALL your cards and info Drivers license, SS card Birth Certificate , Any certification cards, Racing licenses, ocupational licenses, credit cards etc etc
then place it all in a ZIPLOCK bag, waterproof airtight put it a safe place like a safe lockbox or safety deposit box. in the event of lost documentation all you need to do is go get the copies go get a notarized letter saying that you are you and take everything and get the ball rolling!

Interesting. I had a roommate in college who came from Taiwan named James Huang. His Chinese name was "Huang e Ping" (not sure about the spelling of "e", this was the phonetic spelling) which was turned into James Ping Huang on entry. I have worked with several guys from India that had their names rearranged on entry as well.
Too bad the "Jesse" didn't get in there originally...

Well point me in the right direction! It took Rhonda two trips yesterday to complete the mission. She had to go to the school for a certified transcript record. I couldn't get her to ask the security guard if he was the under-endowed Federal Agent she'd heard so much about. She's no fun in these type of matters. :-P

Jesse. I thought you were that guy who became a star on American Idol. Now he had a gimmick.
Couple of days ago, C-Span had a committee on there discussing a national voter registration ID, and how much it would cost to implement it. Sounded like another huge contract for a big business. And you think getting a SS card is tough, there was discussion about certified papers needed to prove your existence. I think a lot of folks would say their vote was not worth losing a days wages over, and just not get a card. Could be a way to rid our country of the popular vote.
Look for a national ID sooner, similar to military ID's, rather than later. It could include a box with voter information. I also predict a standardized drivers license with a ntional database.

:tab Remember... the States were intended to be independent sovereign entities to keep power from being centralized in a federal government... This was the idea behind limited government. States could seceede from the Union if it got out of hand while the States would be held in check by residents leaving to go to other states if things got out of hand in their own state. Moving from one state to another is a hassle, but folks do it all the time. Leaving the country is a whole lot more hassle ;-) Paying lip service to the Constitution while eviscerating it in action can only lead to one result... Concentration of power... Feel the dark side of the Force... http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/images/smilies/darthvader.gif
:tab People need to rewatch the Star War series, especially the first three (the new ones) and pay attention to the economics behind the story line ;-)

So, you're saying that one day, California will realize I'm not coming back, and will regret it's mistakes? Maybe they'll try to lure me back with realistic property values, repealing their high-cap magazine ban, and kicking out all the whack-o's that are screwing the place up.

LOL well NJ certainly doesn't care. Its been said on record by at least one official and was broadcast on a local new program when I lived there.... "...if the people don't like the taxes and cost of living in NJ, they can move to another state and make room for someone that will pay them."
I kid you not....

Yay and nay. One one hand it WOULD be sweet, just as long as the Feds don't handle it. They should just offer full reciprocity between all states like drivers licenses.
I'm one of the dorks that renewed my CHL even though I'll be a commissioned officer in a few months. I just want to help out the stats of the good guys.
