no marketing on MY part or giving/selling email addresses. I make a few pennies on the Google ads on the edges (but that's been a recent thing). I suppose someone could grab all the email addresses if they wanted to go thru the rider HomePage details one by one. That's a reason I didn't list email addresses on any search summary list. Might slow em down....
Considering a login system so a viewer can't view the ride details unless they have an account and are logged in. But I wanted to keep it simple.

I am not offended by unsolicited e-mail that is relevant to a site where I have subscribed. I have a .mil address for official business with the Uniformed Armed Services, and the excite.com address for leisure activities.

Send me Viagra adds and stock tips and I just filter them out. Send me a promotional for something motorcycle related and I'll actually take time to read it.

I hope the database does well. I intend to look for other riders based on locations where I want to ride or manufacturers models. Maybe my photo/avatar will get them to write to me.

the problem now with spam lately is they're putting images (not text) of the crap they're selling. They even change up the image pixels slightly (looks the same to you) I've read so they can't be detected by spam filters as the same spam image.
Lately I'm getting bombarded on all my email addresses.

Suggestion, Get an extra email addr from yahoo ( msn, gmail, , etc...) use it, when it gets bombarded, throw it away and get another. No reason to ever use your main ISP email address except for personal communication with known/trusted associates.

:tab Not related to the database mentioned here, but yesterday I had over 1300 spam emails... On a daily basis I have to remove quite a few spammers from this site when they try to register as a user. It is so bad that now I have to moderate all new accounts before the people are allowed to complete their registration and start posting here. The spam is out of control. I don't want to see the government get involved and try to regulate it because we all know that won't work or really solve anything. It would be nice if somebody in the private industry could really figure out a way to get a handle on it. Filters are great, but it still means the spam is clogging up the bandwidth and storage space on the networks. My filtering is client side, not server side, so I still have to take the time to download those thousands of junk emails. Fortunately, I am on a highspeed connection. Were I on a modem, it would effectively shut me down...

I think we should find the spammers (virus jerks too) and smash their fingers to a pulp with a brick to a point so bad that they can never have use of their fingers again. :mrgreen:

I combined the normal search function with the ZIP code radius search.

Look for:

ZIP or CA-Postal Code: ____and within a radius of ____ miles

Enter your normal search requirements & add the ZIP code radius search restriction. Only riders within that ZIP radius that match you other search input will be listed.

Example: Now you can find all riders that are members of TWT that are within 25 miles of your zip code and ride XYZ cycle brand/model. (if they have TWT in the club affiliation field). Everyone has to be consistent. TWT is probably the easiest.

A pretty powerful search feature to locate other riders with your search criterion within 0,5,10,25, 50 or 100 miles of your ZIP.

Update:

Added a Map Me link below the USA ZIP/Canadian Postal Code on each Riders Home Page.

It then uses Google Maps to map the ZIP/Postal Code location on a North America map. You can then zoom in (uses Google Maps). Play with the Map, Satellite, Hybrid buttons.

It seems to work with 5 digit USA ZIPs and 7 character Canadian Postal Codes (use the format N8W-3Z2, although N8W 3Z2 seems to work).

Get an idea of the area where your fellow riders live.

Our network receives on average 10K emails a day. On a good day, 1500 are legitimate. The bandwidth to process on the front end borders on a DoS attack. I'm not crazy about relay filter services like postini, but I may have to go to something like that just because of the bandwidth hit.

I use the same e-mail all the time. Too confusing usiing multiple addresses. However I do use MS Outlook and add e-mails to my junk folder as they come in. Not too much hassle. And I only get it once.

Scott, I find on my dr forum that if you filter out any addy with .ru (russia) you get 90% of the spammers.
