View Full Version : December Dirt Days

STrider
10-27-2006, 01:34 PM
When: December 2-3

Where: Outlaw Trax (http://www.outlawtrax.com/), weather permitting. If it's closed for weather, Cherokee Cycle Park (http://www.cherokeecyclepark.com/). Check here (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11357) for the story of the last TWT dirt day at Outlaw.

Who: Hemibee and woodsguy are willing to host a group. The group is limited to the first 25 folks.

What: 2 days of dirt riding and camping fun. Some participants may have extra bikes, so this will be a good chance to get some dirt experience if you've been wanting to try it.

Weather: Yes, there will likely be some. I plan to be prepared for cold.
Accuweather Forecast (http://wwwa.accuweather.com/forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&zipcode=77316&metric=0)

Cost: $15.00/ day at Outlaw. Primitive overnight camping is free. RVs & hookups are additional. Check the website for info.

Plan: Meet at Kings Cafe Saturday morning, have breakfast, roll out at 9:00 am. Caravan in the rest of the way, submit payment, waivers, etc., start having fun. Camp Saturday night, ride Sunday, home Sunday afternoon/evening. Of course, camping is not required, and day trippers are welcome too. I just don't want our hosts to be having to make multiple trips back and forth to the gate.

Primitive camping is free. We have restroom facilities with real flush "throns" and showers.

Woodsguy, Mopower or I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about Outlaw Trax, just post your question or PM one of us. I will have the Mopowers old TTR 125 out there if anyone speaks up and requests it.

The property owner is interested in see some "street" folks out tasting :lol2: , I mean sampling  , no I think he said enjoying the wonders of riding in the woods. :rider:

Alex will have the TTR out there. It may be a little down on power for you and it may be a little short but it can be fun to ride.

As far as the 20 riders go, Woodsguy, Mopower, myself and any additional Outlaw members will not count against the 20.

Mopower and I were out riding Outlaw yesterday and the trails were great. Lots of traction and just a few mud holes. Could not have asked for a much better day to ride the woods. I had planned to get some photos of areas at Outlaw that have not been posted before but the riding was so good I never went back for the camera. Looking forward to the group ride, weather permitting it should be great.

The MX track for the most part is hard pack along with the Kid's MX Track and the Drag Strip. We also have a couple of fire/ranch roads that could be done with the Strom. I guess it would mainly depend on what you would want or feel like trying, heck you might could do the Camelback but Double Dip is out of the question.

You will have to use one of the dirt bikes in attendance to try the Double Dip, man I love the Double Dip.

If I understand the question, you're considering a smaller/ lighter dirt bike? If so, it depends on what you wanna do -

If you wanna be DS legal off the showroom floor -
Husaberg, Husqvarna, or DRZ400.

If DS is not a concern, I think it comes down to which color you like. There's not enough difference between brands in modern bikes for me to be discernably better on one than another. I'd probably go for a WR400/426/450 - just because it seems like theres a lot of them out there, and I really liked the one I got some seat time on, and it matches the gear I have. XR400's also have a very loyal following, and tons of aftermarket/ hop-up support. Two-stroke is an option as well, but not for me.

BUT - If I already had a XR650R (I do), I'd just stick with it. I've seen & ridden 'em on nasty, sick, slick, rock-whooped out, cliff-ledge single track goat trails. AND - For what I've seen at Outlaw (not much, yet) and SHNF, the BRP does just fine.

There are a few reasons I want another bike. The XR is in a thousand pieces, including the engine, getting a complete frame up restoration and probably won't be ridable till Feb. Want another bike for friends and a backup bike. Putting alot of strange stuff on the XR for adventure riding - Alaska in July and two Mexico trips. CAN'T WAIT!
Already knew what to say because I rehearsed it for my wife. LOL
I'm leaning toward the WR450F and putting a plate on it.
By-the-way I'm 150lbs with a 29" inseam and am swinging both feet - will I really get use to it?
Chuck

Hemibee

Another bike you can look at is the 2007 KTM 450 & 525 EXC's, they are both street legal for 2007. Height wise they are a little tall but can be lowered. I know of someone with about the same inseam that is on a 525 and he would think of anything else.

Well, I have a plated '03 WR450. I love it. But it is taller than the XR by 2 inches or so. having a 32 inch inseam, I have to lay the bike over to get on it. Othewise I have to jump to. But you being lighter, will be able to use a softer spring and will probably be able to lower it a little.

It is 260lbs full of gas. Avoid the '03 model if you have the chance, there was a starter issue, and costs $200-$400 to fix. The maintaince on it is a little high, but the bike is great. I don't know where you live, but you are more than welcome to test drive mine.

Thanks Matt, I've been wanting to do that but my software doesn't allow it with the limited knowledge I have of it.

I'm going to have to get a new GPS map of the trails since we've added several new sections since that one was produced by a member of MSRA. I guess what I really need to do is get a better GPS and mapping software to do it with the features in Google Earth.

1 Month to go!! (Can you tell I need more dirt time?)

You will have to do the double dip with us this time. That was the spot where the KLR's were directed down a bypass and then Alex, Dan and myself broke off from the group to meet y'all on the other side. First time I hit it was an eye opener. No one warned me and all of a sudden the bottom dropped out :eek2: on the second dip (Old Direction - trails have since been reversed) and then straight up the other side. I swore up and down that I was going to change the name from "Double Dip" to "Oh, Jesus" on the sign. Now everytime we are out there it is the one section I have to do. :rider:

It's good to see ?? Jeff quadthingy on the list. He had that quadthingy flying the last time he was out there with us.

He was awesome at Cherokee. He had to "improvise" in a few of the real narrow spots, and got real tweaked coming up a rutted creek bank, (busted a headlight when his wheel hit it), but still awesome. He's semi-secretly lusting after a two-wheeler.

Thanks for posting up the rules.

5 spots left. I'll make a "standby" list for people who are "definites" after the 20 spots are filled.

Also everybody remember things for non-riding time. Chairs, coolers, horseshoes, frisbees, footballs, cards....

Trucking. We'll be in Tony's pick-up. We had planned on going to SHNF (nice and open for the big bikes), but this will be a good alternative just in case someone spits in the SHNF and they close the trails. He and I haven't done much trail riding though since our injuries (once at Cross Creek, what a waste of time and money that was), so we're a little reluctant to ride tight trails with a large group. Another problem is the fee; it's close to X-mas, and I might not have it.

Anyone know how many miles of trails there are? Are they all woods? What's the largest possible loop? I'm not a fan of riding multiple laps. If it's anything like Cross Creek, I'd rather not.

Deer season, you take your chances out there with the "drug store" hunters.

He and I haven't done much trail riding though since our injuries (once at Cross Creek, what a waste of time and money that was), so we're a little reluctant to ride tight trails with a large group.

That depends on the group. Some of the best rides we have had at Outlaw were with large groups.

Anyone know how many miles of trails there are?
A little over 20 miles on the main loop and several miles of spur routes, ranch roads, two MX tracks (un-groomed) and a kids set of trails.

Are they all woods?

No, we also have a grass track section, ranch roads, two MX tracks, a drag strip and ATV wide trail sections.

What's the largest possible loop? At the risk of sounding like a jerk, how long do you want it to be? If the sections are hit just right you can do just about as many miles as you want. You may see some of the same areas more than once but you can work it out to where you are on the trails all day.

If it's anything like Cross Creek, I'd rather not.

It's not like Cross Creek, at least what I know of Cross Creek.

Thanks for the info Tony.

Deer season, you take your chances out there with the "drug store" hunters.
It's not bad. I rode out there almost daily for years (grew up there), particularly during the cooler months, which of course coincides with hunting season. Never had a problem, nor heard of anyone that did. Just dress brightly, should be okay. Hunters actually seem to stay away from the trails (I've never seen any on the trails), I think because of the noise. Not the best hunting conditions.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, how long do you want it to be? If the sections are hit just right you can do just about as many miles as you want. You may see some of the same areas more than once but you can work it out to where you are on the trails all day.

No risk, I know what you mean. In the old days, most of my woods rides ranged from 30-60 miles in the SHNF. I don't know what I can handle now, but I'd like to have the miles available (This was going to be an old-times-sake ride). I don't have much spare time or $, and it could be months or even another year before I get to do it again, so I want to make sure it's something I want to do.

What I didn't like about CC, besides the trail only being about 7 miles (seemed even shorter), was that it was all open, and tightly grouped. I felt like I was zig-zagging through a pasture with a tree here and there. Since then, that has been my impression of private riding ranches.

You're in for a treat then. We do have some sections that have a few cut backs in them. You will, IMHO get your money's worth here.

That is correct. The lists are current up to this post.

There are spots left. Everybody, make sure your status as "D" or "M" is accurate, and make your claim to a spot in the thread, NOT via PM, as it's first come first claimed. There is a very small amount of leeway in the number of spots available - For instance - if TMdad comes, TM could legitimately be his guest regardless of the rest of us. But there shouldn't be a whole 'nother group claiming to be on the TMdad guest list.

To answer a couple peoples question:

The purpose of the cap on the number of people is not be exclusive or leave anybody out. The reasons are:

1. We are guests of the members. (Hemibee, MoPower, and woodsguy. Thanks Guys!!!) We don't want to overburden them (more) with having too many bikes, trucks, tents, to reasonably manage.

2. We are guests of the ranch. We don't want to burden the facility or be in the way of their other members.

3. 'Hat management. I do not expect, nor has any TWT member ever given me reason to expect, less than exemplary behavior. BUT.... There are people who take leave of their senses when HP, beer, camping and campfires, and general outdoorsiness are involved. In the event somebody needs to be invited to leave, we don't want to have an enormous mob making a scene.

There's a large, open grass area within the ranch, not far from the entrance. Might be fun to get a late afternoon game of Ultimate or touch football going. I'll play if I still have the capacity to move.

Sounds good to me. Of course, I'm an old guy and hope to have a comfortable chair to observe from.

Squeaky, don't know if I should be offended or not. You keep wanting rides on everybody else's bikes but mine. Why ride that lightweight, powerful wr450 of John's when you can could ride my heavy, moderately powerful drz with a tire that could dig a huge trench. Yeah John, I still haven't worn out the teraflex yet. Dang, just realized that heavy and trench describe a tractor too.

Casey, we don't have the "miles" of trails like SHNF, but it is nothing like CC.
The trails range from quad width or little more to some you work the bars thru. From don't go faster than your Guardian Angel can fly to walking speed.
I believe you will find the trails fun and some of the gully climbs are challenging. Mainloop is close to 20 miles. Since we added some new stuff hasn't been re-milaged.(sp)!

Then we can ride the loop again and take some different routes in places to make it different. Plus there are routes around anything questionable for less experienced riders. Take my 6 year old on the majority of the trails on his xr50.

Only thing is don't come expecting a m/x track like CC, we don't have that. I stay off the m/x stuff.

Campfires are allowed. And yes, it wood be best that you bring your own wood. Everynow and then there is enough firewood laying around but it gets used up quick by other members.

Here is the rule for campfires..
1.No cutting of brush or trees or tree limbs for firewood purposes.
2.All fires must be under control and are to be extinguished when it is no longer bing used.

Quick check with the mapping software makes it look like 79 through College Station looks best for me, but I'm up by Round Rock and 79. From my house it is about 10 miles longer to go 290 then head NE at Brenham. For you, it looks like a toss up, mileage wise.

Basically, is there anything that I can really do with the Strom up there on Tourrances?

I think I would load the truck.

You could go up and down a couple of ranch roads but it wouldn't be much of a ride. If you wanted to try a little of the milder stuff for practice it would pass a little time. I've seen KLR's with Tourrances or something very much like them hit a few of the trails and they talked about how much work it was. If you aren't used to it a good trail worthy bike will wear you out real quick and I can only guess what a Strom would do to you.

I think I would go back to my first comment, load the truck since you should have plenty other bikes to "sample."

I've got a cheap pair of walkie talkies if you think we'll be set up within range of the gate. Can hang one out there, and leave the other with the group not riding.

woodsguy
11-26-2006, 09:40 PM
That could work, we're only 2-300 yards away. Can they handle that distance and what time would you have them there?

Would be a long day to have a gatekeeper sit there.

Squeaky
11-26-2006, 09:45 PM
"Gatekeeper" could be a hand-off title. Basically attach the key to the walkie talkie, and whnever it's in your posession you're it. Website says it's got a 2-mile range, but it's probably about half that.

woodsguy

Gate is a combo and not sure landowner would be happy with it being passed out. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, but you know!

Walkie-talkies or a big bell would work! Or could have a central cell phone # to call. Most but not all phones work out there.

This is not a biggie, just trying to make it easy. It is hard to see gate from most spots in campground, depending on where we setup the main staging area.

I'm pretty sure there will be multiple members present. Although we don't want them ties to the staging area, maybe we can work something out. I'll ride a different bike to the gate each time someone buzzes! :rider:

The plan is still for most to meet at Kings and then head out to Outlaw together but there are a few that will be late arrivals that we will need to see that get in.

I think the Walkie Talkie idea is a good one as long as those that are coming in a little late realizes it may be a few minutes before someone makes it to the gate.

Skipping Kings Cafe is fine w/ me but is that what we're doing or am I missing something?

No, you're not missing anything. The point of meeting at Kings was to have a nice breakfast, and get everybody at the same spot on the way in, so our hosts don't have to make 25 trips to the gate for everybody showing up separately. About what time do people wanna meet at Kings? I'm thinkin roll out of the parking lot at 8:30 - 9:00 am - That should be plenty early to still get a solid day's riding in, without making those coming from far away hafta get up too early.

I like the walkie talkie or cell-phone idea. I'll PM my cell # to a handful of likely gate-runners & late-comers later. If there's multiple late comers that will be there at about the same time, maybe they can meet up nearby and come in together, save another trip for our member/hosts.

There will surely be lots of cameras on hand. Anybody have the time, capability and technology to take & host some video? I think it'd be neat to get a series of video of folks on one of the "technical" sections (the Double Dip?)- I'm sure I could find new & interesting ways to embarrass myself for everyone's enjoyment.

Whew - now the admin stuff is outta the way -
WOO-HOO!! 5 days left, the bikes are pawing at the door. Cleaned the air filter (finally) in the BRP - apparently the previous owner(s) thought "clean" meant "add oil without removing any previous oil or gunk." The good news - the cleaning shaved 4 lbs, and may have fixed the jetting "hiccup".

I feel like that chubby kid in the Disney commercial: "I'm too excited to sleep!"

I'd even be willing to put get them all together on a cd or dvd so share with those on the ride. Double Dip, 3 Mile Creek, The Camelback, Skull Creek and Outlaw Creek sound like some good spots for videos.

Anyone coming in Friday gimme a holler - 936-295-0187 hm. I should be home shortly after 5:00pm. We can do dinner here in town, say around 7-8pm?

Also, for hotels, I would not stay at the Motel 6, just take my word for it ;-) Most of the other hotels are right in that same area on Exit 116 (Hwy 30/11th St) off I-45. The Comfort Inn, La Quinta, Hampton, Holiday Inn Express, etc,... are all within a mile or so of our house. Anyone wishing to leave bikes at my place instead of the motel parking lot is welcome to bring them by. If I can be of assistance for anyone during the weekend, just let me know. I will be on call so I don't know how much I will actually be able to get out to the park, it just depends on the vagaries of the pager :argh:

That is not as big of a problem as it may sound. Last January we had a camp & ride weekend that was a bit cooler, mid 20's. Before the end of the first loop most of us were wishing we had a whole lot less clothing on. It warms up quick riding in the woods.

Just because it is going to be a little on the cool side, don't forget the Camelbacks.

If we do this, I need a fairly definite count for dinner that evening so I can be sure I have enough, but not way too much.

Put me in for a plate.:eat: Also I can bring my small fold-up pinictable to serve off of.

:tab Would folks be interested in a dinner on Saturday evening? What I have in mind is picking up a few briskets from HEB. They have some presliced smoked briskets that are VERY good. I can have them heating all afternoon and then bring them out in the evening with some extras like potato salad, beans, bread, etc,... We can just set up a buffet off of someone's tailgate. I'd let you handle your own drinks ;-) Figure dinner at 5-6pm?

I haven't talked to Irondawg yet to be sure we will hang around that long, but I suspect we will. So go ahead and count us in. Anything we can contribute?

I'm ready! :rider:

Truck is packed, will be stopping at Wally World for a few snack items and a few gallons of water for the group. I brought my 12'x12' canopy in case we need it, but I think I might actually prefer to be in the sun. :sun:

Anyone need any last-minute items and not want to stop on their way?

I have a plate and utensils for me. I like bringing them when I camp to avoid adding to the trash pile. ;-)

Hi, all,

I also got my bikes on my truck. It'll be XR250 and KX85 mod to 100.
Planning to stop at a grocery store tomorrow morning first, then will show up at King's sometime between 8:00 and 8:30.

Thanks!

I’m almost ready. It’s been a struggle to find enough “off road” gear that’s still serviceable. The only thing that I can’t salvage is a pair of over the glasses goggles. I thought I had one good pair left but I don’t. If anyone has and extra pair I could borrow tomorrow I’d sure appreciate it. See every body at King’s in the morning.

Alrighty, got two briskets, bucket-o-beans, pickles, onions, Beth's homemade Tater salad, she's also making a cake, and that is it for the food. I'll try to have it all out there by 5:30.

We will need plates, utensils, and trashbags. Also, you will need your own drinks.

Got all the above covered :rider: :rider::eat: :rider:

I will be showing up a bit later than planned due to a simple oil/filter change gone awry:headbang: I'll be on a mission to find an oil filter cover bolt in the morning, but should arrive early afternoon.
