Hi everybody,
Has anyone here had a problem with losing clips on their master link? I have only put about 1500 miles on my cbr and am now on my 3rd clip. The first one I noticed part of it had broken off, so I replaced it. Now I was cleaning my chain and noticed the one I had put on wasn't even there anymore.

I took off the cover on the front sprocket and noticed a fairly significant amount of gunk built up so I scraped all that off.

Do you guys think the gunk may have been causing it, I am just not lubing the chain well enough, or it needs to be tightened? Any comments or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but did you put it on with the open end of the clip facing opposite the direction of travel? If it is facing backwards, any thing can cause it to open and come off.

Wow, three in 1500 miles. I really would only guess that it was that the chain tension was not adjusted. I can see how any junk under the sprokect cover could be causing the problem and while libing your chain is important, I have know people to go thousands of miles without doing it and not have a problem. Might just check the pins to make sure that they are ok. Hopefully someone around here has a better idea

good luck

Trash the circlip and get a rivet master link. I won't use anything else.

Rivet is the sure way, but yeah the clips should be installed one way, and be careful not to bend them.

I have had a circlip come off which then caused the masterlink to come off which caused the chain to go smashing through the cases of an old cbr600 f2. So I would get rid of that asap and get a rivit type.

My new link should be in today.

pdef,

If you don't have the proper tool, you can bung up the o-rings on the chain/master link. Run up to the dealer and have them do it for you. It shouldn't cost but a few bucks since it takes less than five minutes.

FWIW.
