Here is my progress so far in modifying my 2003 DR650 into a medium distance adventure tourer. Spitfire windshield - works well, but had to request longer brackets from Slipstreamer, which they sent free.

Happy Trails side racks and skidplate - Skidplate reflects some extra noise back up, but protects the engine cases well.

Avon Gripster tires - Should last about 10,000 miles. These are good for highway and gravel, not so good for mud or sand. Good quality tires.

Motobillet aluminum tailrack - very lightweight and good fit, but pricey.

Dynojet carb kit and modified airbox - Much improved power with only a small drop in gas mileage, now getting 50 mpg. Engine runs cooler too.

The first trip with this bike will be a 2000 mile trip from Temple, TX to Chama NM, then down the continental divide route on forest service roads, BLM roads, dirt county roads, etc all the way to Antelope Wells on the Mexican border.

After the seat is modified I believe this bike will be able to handle 400 - 500 mile days and travel on highway, rough washboarded dirt roads, etc without a problem.

Any dual sport riders interested in such a trip?

Thanks,
Geezer

I'd be interested, but sadly, have no time to take such a nice trip. :-(

Are you using the stock tank/seat, or have you already mod'd those? I've got a '98 DR650 and the IMS/Corbin combo that needs to go on...

Sounds like you've got a sweet set up...

Always interested, but time and money is a different story. Sounds like fun though. Let me know when you want to do a 3-day weekend into Mexico or something...

The southwest has some great dual sporting. If you ever venture into Arizona or Baja, let me know, I'll fill you in.
