Has anyone on the board ever explored the
western half of Erath County?

Basically the area I'm interested in is bordered by

State Hwy 108 to the east,
IH-20 to the North,
State Hwy 16 to the West,
and Farm Road 8 to the South.

I hunted in a couple of spots in that area in the 70's
and would like to ride around and see if it's still
as nice as I remember it.

I know there were mining operations in the area in
the 80's and there MIGHT be some additional offshoots
other than just the mapped county roads.

Google Earth shows a ton of additional roads but are
most likely on private land.

Back in the 70's the tracts of land in the area were
very large (the one we hunted was almost 46 square miles)

Fuel availability could be a problem as well as cell
coverage unless you're near IH-20.

Also, It used to be pretty much covered in rattlesnakes.

No way would I try this area till after deer season and
not during spring turkey season.

Any info, tips, or advice of a ride in this area
would be very helpful.

Thanks

The file can be viewed with Google Earth

I would love to see what you have on this too. I tried to open the file you have attached but it wouldn't work for me. I just got a 2004 DRZ400S and would really like to explore some dirt within a few hours driving distance of the Metroplex this Spring. Can you keep me posted on this?

Do you have any other files you can share?

Doug

I just got back from that area on my street bike locating fuel and a place to stay.

Where 108 hits IH-20 near Gordon there is a 24hour truck stop on the north side and an Exxon and RV park on the south side.

I'm thinking of setting up camp at the RV park and doing loops out of that location and exploring for a couple of days.

If I run out of decent riding road I can always head north of IH-20, it's only 34 miles to PK lake...there should be plenty of good riding around that area.

The GPX file located in the original post can be opened in Google Earth but your have to change the file extension options in the file open dialog box.

That's basically Thurber, Mingus, and Strawn then. I once drove to that area from Breckenridge on the paved roads and was surprised to find small hills just north of there. I have heard that there are some interesting roads between there and Stephenville too.

When I get a chance, I'll try to open that file in Google Earth.

Are you taking a GPS unit the next time you go?

cr 494,495 and cr107 south of I20 and east of hwy 16 are great. We did them in December and I was on a DRZ400 myself. The roads wind through the hills and are in rough condition due to heavy truck traffic moving wind generator equipment in. All of those roads on google earth are behind gates. Those roads go to windmills or oilpumps. We did a two day ride. Day one was south of I20 and day 2 was north around Graham and a loop around PK. I have a Garmin track if you want it.
