View Full Version : Elmer Symons Family Benefit Ride

A bunch of folks are getting together for a benefit ride for the family of fallen rider Elmer Symons. The ride is scheduled for Red River Motorcycle Trails, January 26-28, 2007. Instead of posting all the details I am cross posting the information on the ride:

I want to put together a benefit ride for Elmers family. There are many things going on right now to try and help the family deal with the financial ends of what has transpired with the passing of Elmer. The costs which have been incurred are not minimal and there are efforts going across the web and the world to aid the family of the fallen star. All benefits from the ride will be passed on to the rider down foundation. They will be setting up an Elmer Symons fund, can provide tax documents for donation write offs and will be handling the final transfers, of all moneys received, to the family of Elmer.

If you would like to aid the family of one of our greatest personalities, have a great time with good folks, get some excellent riding in and watch an Arkansas fool try to tackle some of the harder obstacles at Muenster, in honor of Elmer, then you should plan to attend the Elmer Symons benefit ride at Red River Motorcycle Trails, January 26-28, 2007. I will be providing a keg of beer for those that wish to partake of vast quantities of adult beverages. 2 kegs if enough people show up. 21 and over only on the keg. I ask a minimum donation of $25 to attend the event. I have spoken with Bruce at RiderDown, 100% of the money will goto the Symons fund. If so desired, Bruce will also be able to provide papers for tax write offs on any donations. Please come out and show your support for an outstanding individual. Dont let cold weather or rain scare you. It wouldnt scare Elmer! Hardcore baby! Lets get together, have a great time, help out some wonderful people in need and remember a fantatstic human being.

To anyone that would like to help in making this event possible, I would appreciate any and all efforts. Guides will be needed. I will be calling Red River to make all arrangements. If you plan on attending please leave a reply here or send me a pm. I hope to see you all there!

I will be there around 12:00 noon on the 26th no matter the conditions.

If you can make the ride, please let me know and I will make sure you are included in the list of riders making the ride so Chris (ArkansasXC of KTMTalk) will be able to let the owners know ahead of time how many people will be there for the ride.

Any help the family can receive will be greatly appreciated.

As more details are know I will post them here.

Hey Tony,I will plan to attend this, one day at least (Saturday?). I can't keep up with you guys but I'll be there to support a rider down.
Sorry to hear about Elmer. I missed Last Man Standing - would like to have seen him and the other really hard-core riders.

Thanks Theresa, we should have a blast. Don't worry about not keeping up since I'm still trying to recover from injuries I experienced last year and my speed is down.

***If you attend this ride, make certain to tell Rebecca, when you sign in, that you are there for the Elmer Symons Benefit ride. She will be donating $5 of every $10 entry fee that is paid by people that are attending this ride. She has also provided 3 full days use of the pavilion free of charge. Also, if you plan on arriving on Friday, you will need to contact Rebecca at 940-995-2903 to get the gate code. Be sure to mention this event***

I will be there around 12:00 noon on the 26th no matter the conditions.

I am working on trying to gather up some prizes to raffle off. My local shop, Kawasaki Sportscenter has already offered to step up to the plate and give some things for the raffle. I will be trying to contact other vendors to add more prizes. Every cent will go to the RiderDown foundation for the Elmer Symons fund.

Any checks should be made payable to the RiderDown Foundation and in the memo section please note Elmer

RiderDown still has their phone fund raiser going on so if you have ANY old phones, bring them to the ride, drop them in the box and help an injured rider!

If you would like an easy way to donate to the fund simply see the thread on RiderDown.org.. http://www.riderdown.org/forum/showthread.php?p=3090#post3090, scroll down to the post with the African flag in it, click the flag and paypal a donation. RiderDown is a non-profit organization. ALL proceeds will goto Elmers family to help pay the costs of getting him home and the debt from racing Dakar.

Directions and contact info for RRMT
Directions to
Red River Motorcycle Trails, Inc.
in Bulcher, Texas

http://216.165.194.66/ktmtalk/photogallery/galleries/members/map.gif

Coming from Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas Area...

RRMT, Inc. is about an hour and a half north of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Coming from that area, you will want to go north on I-35 to Gainesville. When you get to Gainesville, you will exit Highway 82 and go west towards Wichita Falls. You will go about thirteen miles through the towns of Lindsay and Muenster. Upon arriving in Muenster, you will turn right onto Main Street at the only stop light on Highway 82 in Muenster. You will then head north about one mile when you will come to the end of the road, keep left. You are now on FM Road 373 and traveling west. Follow this road for approximately fourteen miles to Bulcher. Considering the population of Bulcher is minimal, the only thing that people will see on their way to RRMT, Inc. will be the wide open country side, Turtle Hill Golf Course, and an old dilapidated school building from the early 1900s. Once you pass the school, the local road turns into a new paved state highway. If you look to the right, you will see the Red Bull Barn (made famous from the 2006 Red Bull Last Man Standing Race). From there on, it is about two miles to the gate. Red River Motorcycle Trails, Inc. will be located on the right and you cannot miss it.

Coming from Wichita Falls, Texas Area...

RRMT, Inc. is about an hour east of the Wichita Falls area. Travel east from Wichita Falls on Highway 82 until you reach Saint Jo. Then turn northeast on FM 2382 for approximately ten miles. After coming to a fork in the road, turn left onto FM Road 373 and stay on this new paved state highway for approximately two miles and then you will see the park entrance on your right.

Coming from Lawton, Oklahoma Area...

Take Highway 7 East to Duncan. In Duncan, take Highway 81 South to Ryan. In Ryan, take Highway 32 East to 89/32 Spur. Turn right to follow 89 South. You will take 89 South to the T Intersection. Then turn left to follow 677 South. Take 677 South to the 677/373 Y Intersection. Follow 373 to the left.

Coming from Northern Oklahoma...

Tired of driving all the way down I-35 to Gainesville, Texas and then turning back West on Highway 82? Try this new route...saves time and is more scenic. When you get to Marietta, Oklahoma, take Highway 32 East to Courtney, Oklahoma. Then take Highway 89 across Taovayas Indian Bridge (that goes across the Red River). Once across the bridge, get on 677 and go East. Then when 677 intersects with 373, get on 373 and go East. Follow 373 for approximately 5 miles (give or take). The park will be on your left.

Thanks for signing on to come out and participate in the event. Especially so soon after having knee surgery done. Your hardcore man! Ive got you on the list.

Theresa... If you would like to handle the raffle, that would be fine. I dont think there would be a problem waiting until saturday AM to start selling tickets. I really appreciate you volunteering to help out. I cant wait to meet you all there.

FirstMan...I appreciate that. I was waiting on the Keg to see how many are going to show for the event. Now with the Toro Race scheduled for the same weekend, its looks like we will have a bigger turn out so you might want to go ahead and get that keg and I will pick up a keg of Sam Adams Light. If you have an e-z up, Im sure it has use there. We have food providedf for dinner two nights, I will be providing breakfast for saturday and Sunday. I could use a couple of volunteers to help with cooking. Maybe someone to bring utenisl, napkins, cups, plates...etc... I will see what else I can think of. Things are a bit crazy right now....LOTS to do. Thanks again!

Hi Theresa! Somewhere between 45-60 for sure, possibly quite a few more but not certain. The Toro race that was scheduled for this weekend has been rescheduled for next weekend. They wont be in the same area as us, but I know some of them will be coming over before the race. Some will arrive Friday and be with our event until Saturday evening probably. Its hard to give a hard number count now with this turn of events.

I really appreciate everyone single one of you that has decided to step up and attend this event, those that are also aiding in making it possible by sponsorships and everyone that has helped me in pulling this thing together. You are ALL great people in my eyes. Thank you all!

Chris,

I want to make an additional offer for the pen I will donate. I will also donate a pen to be built from a design by the winner. This will truely produce a one of a kind pen that is customized for the winner. There will be a few guidelines I will discuss with the winner and let them decide the route this pen will take.

Some basic guidelines would be it has to be from normal stock. Pens made from rattlesnake, python, cobra, other skins, antlers, horn, ivory or rare woods will have a material cost fee and would be subject to availability from my suppliers.

Chris,
Anybody got ice/drinks covered? I can bring a cooler and some bags of ice. I could pick up some gallons of tea, too if needed (5-6 gal?).

The extened weather forecast looks good!

Theresa,
I will have a five gallon water cooler full of ice water and will probably have at least one ice chest with 1 or 2 20lb ice bags in it.

The forecast IS looking good, can't wait to get dirty!

I also will bring a water cooler, it's a big one, at least 10 gal I think. I will get ice in that and get a couple of bags in an ice chest as well. I can get tea if no one else is bringing drinks. I have plastic utensils (forks, spoon, knives) plates and cups - no napkins, you Barbarians will be using paper towels. :-P You guys who are cooking are bringing your own utensils such as spatulas etc.?

I know I probably don't have to say this buttttttttttttttttttttttt..................

Everyone bring a camera so we can do a ride report like no others have been done. There are some folks here on TWT that do outstanding ride reports and we need to show them how the dirty side does a report. Over on KTMTalk we have some near pro's at doing ride reports and I want to do one over there that blows them away. For those of you that haven't had the chance to see the reports Chris does over there, he is one of the near pro's so with our help he could move into the real pro ranking of ride reports. I'm even going to charge the battery in my camera to have it ready to go. So knock the dust off them cameras and let's do this up right!

Not trying to put you on the spot, just making sure we get a bunch of pictures and I will more than gladly help in the report by also adding my take on the event with yours. What I'm really doing is putting myself on the spot cause now I have to be equal to you, the doc and Que over on KTMTalk. ;-)

But I can do it, I think, well I hope I can. :lol2:

I need to be familiarized with a few terms used over here. What is "The Dirty Side"? Is that KTMtalk or TWT?

I think Alex answered that for me but I'll go a little further.

Remember most of the folks here on TWT ride those odd bikes with the odd names........ Beemer, 'Busa, R1, Ninja, Duc, Lightening, Road King and Gold Wing to name a few. Then there is us, the "Dirty Sheep" of the family that likes to play in the mud and dirt. Our pie runs feature mud pies instead of apple pies and we are happiest when our bikes look like this.
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/3623/mudorcement2ld.jpg

Now thrown in the mix is those that go either way. They haven't been fully converted to the "Dirty Side" but we are working on them. We are feared by those on the other side, we might claim another one of them and they will then spend the rest of their riding days on the "Dirty Side"

Hi, Tony,

I am still debating...

It is a little far, so I need to have my family's understanding, but so far it does not look good...

I worked last Sunday, so technically can take Friday off. Not sure yet, but trying to be there at least for 24 hrs.

Well, I have had 1 person back out, and my wife who I put to bed with a fever at 9pm asked right before she went to bed "can I still ride tomorrow?" Wow, what a trooper. So, unless my wife is significantly better tomorrow, we will not be headded that direction.

Have fun!

WOW, what a ride! Hope the ride report turns out to be as much fun as the riding was. Theresa it was good to meet you. Thanks for the tea and cookies, they hit the spot. Backspinnn, sorry I didn't see your post until this morning. I'm sure we probably could have worked something out. FirstMan, what can I say other than it sounds like she wanted to ride, but a chilly as it got out there Saturday night it might be best she stayed home and let you play doctor. For some reason that just doesn't sound the way I meant it, oh well you know what I mean.

We were out there! It was a great time until my wife didn't know why we were going around this puddle, she went through it. It ended up being 3 foot deep. I wish we had a camera. It got very cold and she was still sick so we left out before dinner. We were the guys across with the WR, XR and KTM. It was great meeting everyone, sorry I didn't ever meet up with you Hemibee. Teresa, good meeting you as well.

So, did we win anything at the raffle?;-)

I second the "WOW what a ride!", Tony. It was great to meet you, Firstman, and was that Getbent with you? I had my own mudhole experience on Saturday, but luckily there was no one with a camera around (so it didn't happen ;-) ) Firstman, we need to meet up for another ride so your wife can take my little DRZ for a ride. She'll be amazed how easy it is to throw around and it has plenty of spunk to play on. I figure I'll thrash it out pretty good and by that time I'll be ready to graduate up.
I'm already planning the next ride to Red River. Good thing it's less than a couple of hours away, I have a feeling I'm going to be there a lot!

And extra thanks to Danielle, Vernon, and the rest of the crew who so kindly looked after this newbie and didn't let her get lost or stranded!

Chris thanks for putting together such a great group of people. I hope to see you again. :rider:

Tony, Theresa, Firstman....It was great to meet you all and spend some time with you. I really appreciate you all coming out, showing respect to Elmer and having a great time with us! I look forward to riding and meeting you all again in the future. I will get my RR posted on KTMtalk ASAP! Tony, it looks like your well on your way with your report! I cant wait to read the rest!

Firstman, you did indeed win a couple of items in the Raffle! You won a set of Oakley Goggles and one of the Engraved wooden Plaques! I didnt realize that you were "Firstman" when I met you. You probably told me but I was a Zombie, as far as the mental aspect goes, for much of the weekend. I was functioning on a minimal number of hours of sleep. PM me an addy and I will get your things shipped to you ASAP!

Thank you all again for coming out. I hope you had as good of a time as I did. I appologize for the lack of scheduling and will do much better when we have the first annual Elmer Symons Memorial ride back at Muenster this summer. If I was rude to anyone, I appologize. It was not my intent to be perceived that way. I simply wasnt fully there mentally.

hey ArkansasXC! What a great ride! You KTM guys were more than patient and helpul. Its nice to ride with groups like ya'll. I was the guy the xr650r that stalled a little too often. After listening to you talk about Elmer and his personality and character, I understand why he had so many friends. You guys are great and hope to see ya''ll around.

Forgive me all. I was at Gilmer this past weekend for the National Enduro. It was very nice to meet you as well. I remember you. You were with Adam. I appologize for not remembering your name. You were wearing Black and Red gear right? I never saw you stall out and I couldnt say anything if I did. I think I lived in Nuetral and if I wasnt there, I was stalled.
I really appreciate you all coming out. Adams wife had to be the most hardcore individual there Saturday, without a doubt. To come out and ride while being that sick, WHAT A TROOPER! Kudos for sure! Thank again for supporting the effort. It was great to see so many people that, didnt know Elmer, come out to support the event and add to the fun, friends and of course fundraising efforts. It couldnt have happened without all of you.
You've heard the saying "A cut above"? Elmer was 2 cuts above that. Ive met quite a few people in my short 34 years and Ive never met anyone like him. He was truely a unique individual. He will be missed by many and remembered as a legend by many more.
If you guys ever make it over to Arkansas with your bikes, let me know. I know the "sweetspot". Just drop me a PM. Ya'll should check out KTMtalk if your not members there. Its free to register. It doesnt matter if you ride a KTM or not no one there cares what you ride as long as its not a quad!
:hack:

Theresa, when we got up there, Rebecca was gone. I left it under the porch of the house that they stay in while they are out out RRMT. Where you sign in at. Did they know that it would be left there for you? If so, Im sure they still have it. Do you have Rebeccas number? If not its on http://www.redrivermotorcycletrails.com .
Thank you very much for coming out and supporting the event. You were a big help and I sincerely appreciate it. I appologize to you and everyone else for all of the trouble that we had, out on the trail, on Saturday. I dont know how everyone got split up into so many different groups. I appologize for the confusion. It will be better directed next time.

Tony, I look forward to being able to sit down and read your entire report, once I can get things settled down. Thanks for all of your help with the benefit. You donated some great prizes and I know that the people that won them really liked them alot. You make very nice calls and pens and I will recommend you when ever I have the chance. It was nice to finally get to meet you and Alex, hang out some and ride together. I look forward to the next time we are on the same trails. Brock Creek is always waiting for you all. Be ready for a challenge though!
