01/29/07 - now looking for trades for 650 Dual Sport in like condition
Okay, bike fever is killing me and it's not even the middle of January.
Here is the opportunity for someone to pick a nice standard that has been well maintained and has most of the mods and upgrades that are typically done to these bikes already in place.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the nice words. This has been one of those dream bikes, in that it is so darn reliable and it does so many things well (easy cruise for an weekend trip? No problem. Knock around town in traffic? No problem. Triple digit speeds for 100 miles? No problem.).
I really wish that Honda would make a new updated version of the Nighhawk.
Ideally -
1000 - 1200 cc
fuel injected
lighter overall weight
modern frame design
dual disc front / single disc rear
same upright seating and foot placement
same self adjusting valves
6 speed transmission

I have strongly considered painting the fairing and belly fairing to match (Candy Tahitian Blue). I have found were to order the paint (2 parts a base and a finish), now if I could just find a painter how doesn't want to charge me enough to send his kid through their first year of college to paint them :eek2:
1TallTXn
01-19-2007, 06:31 PM
wow, paint itself isn't cheap but you wouldn't require much of it for those two parts.
I would think that if you took off the parts and took them to the paint shop, handed them the paint that it wouldn't be that expensive. but then i've never actually done it. done all my paint work myself, with dad and some friends help.
good luck on the sale.
you land that XR400 or the 650? or was it the Viffer?

I was quoted between $250 and $400 to prep, paint and cure those 2 parts, when I checked several professional paint and body shops. Added to the over $100 for the paint, it just didn't seem worth it
Missed the 650 (dad-gum-it!), I've talked with the represective owners about both the 400 and the VFR.
But I had an unexpected car repair bill of nearly $1000 :eek2: for my daughter's car this week, so that bit into my play money a bit.
But all is not lost, I'm still in the market for both a DS and I will probably replace the Nighthawk this year, just have to get all the planets aligned correctly and I am positive that things will fall right into place. :rider:

Maybe I should try one of those "my Nightawk and $$$ for ????" type ads?
Or a "Want To Trade" (WTT) ad?
What do you think?
Greg in H-Town
01-20-2007, 03:04 PM
Post an ad on houston.craigslist.org. Doesn't cost anything, you can post pictures, and you get replies relayed to you through craigslist so that you don't have to give out your email. Put up an ad there, and then post links to it in other forums - that way, if you have to change anything then you have to do it only once. I sold my Specialized Allez road bike through there this past Thursday; ad went up Wednesday, bike gone the next day.

Before I succumb to taking a hit at below wholesale on a trade in, I'm gonna bump this back to the top one more time. The CL price listed was $2,750.00. KBB lists an average retail of $2,330.00 which doesn't consider the low mileage or the upgrades and add-ons.
I rode this bike yesterday over to the BMW place in South Houston and almost left it there, but before I go the route of a wholesale trade-in price, I'm going to offer it to the members of this board for $2,200.00.
If I can I'll also lower it on th CL listing, but I'm making the price drop here first.
I thought I had found a DR650 trade, but that has begun to look like the other party is no longer interested, so here goes....

Yep, it is pretty, even my neighbors just drooled over the color. Uneventfull ride from Deer Park to Cypress, well sort of.............................
................When I got off of 290 at Telge and was sitting at the light I thought I could smell something burning. Looked down and realized the heel of my left boot had melted on the exhaust pipe.:eek2:
On the ride home I gave it a good work out to make sure Cindy would have something she liked, Becca.
A little tour past the ton on 610 and a bit of peg draging on the ramp from I-10 to 610 north (towards 290), a few stoppies and that was enough for me to see what it needs.
1) Left peg and shifter slightly bent. This put my foot out of position beyond the muffler heat shield resulting in a ruined pair of water proof boots.
2) Tire pressure seems low, front and back
3) Left controls too high
4) Fork oil level is too high (hydraulic locks before reaching full stroke)
Soooooooooooooo, we get home about 9:30 and I tell Cindy she'll have to ride the Bandit for Tomorrow's TSBA ride to Flatonia, well that went like this...:hack:
So it was back to the garage while Cindy did this.........:scott:
Away I went fixing the foot peg, shifter and adjusting the side stand. This repair solved the boot on the muffler problem. Adjusted the left controls and aired up the tires from 25 psi to 36. Lubed the chain and checked the rear wheel alignment. Honda cleaned the entire bike and used steel wool on the carb covers, wheels and pipes.
Tony and I took it for a spin around the block :rider: and it was a world better. As for the fork oil, it will have to wait until Sunday. Don't think Cindy will be doing any stoppies tomorrow.:lol2:
All in all it is a great bike and it has been well cared for. Thanks Erby for a good deal. Cindy will surely enjoy it.

Chris,
I must say that I am really surprised about the boot issue, I never had a problem with that, even on 400 mile + days. Sorry to hear that yours got damaged.
I'm also surprised about the tire pressure and will now have to check my gauge, because I showed 30 psi (cold) about 2 days ago???
Anyway, thanks again and I hope that Cindy gets lots of miles and smiles from her new Nighthawk.

Oh, and don't even be concerned about the boot melting - Chris sits sideways on every bike he rides. He just doesn't realize it. I tell him all the time, but he doesn't think he does.
Oh well, it's MY bike, so he doesn't have to worry about melting HIS boots!!! ;-)

Erby, I wasn't complaining or anything, the bike is great and exactly what you said it was. Cindy jumped all over me saying that I hurt your feelings. Sorry, I was just relaying my story.
Each person has their own little quirks of how they like things or how they ride. Obviously my big fat feet wasn't what Honda had in mind when the designed that boot gaurd. Turns out after todays ride, Cindy left a bit of burned boot rubber on booth pipes:eek2:
Cindy put over 200 miles on it today. It ran flawlessly and everyone who saw it thought it was new. Cindy is absolutely thrilled with it and totally in love. I think she was trying to make room for it in our room:doh:

Chris,
Good evening. Please tell Cindy that my feelings were not hurt, nor did I take your post as complaining, I fully understood you were describing your personal experience, but I very much appreciate her concern.
I really was surprised, as I said, just because I've always though that those pipes had some of the best or at least, the easiest to use, heel hangers around. I'm guessing that a big part of the difference in individual foot placement, (i.e. toes, ball of foot, slid forward until boot heels are stopped by pegs, etc.)
I am very glad to hear that the ride went well and that Cindy likes her new bike, that's very important and as a member of this community, I want the bike to be as it was advertised, but more so, I want another member of this community to be pleased with it, which can be totally different.
Well, it's too late on a Saturday night to become philosophical about the nuances of virtual citizenship....:lol2:
