View Full Version : Painting the KLR with bed liner

After seeing the nice results TexBiker got with the bedliner paint on his GS, I thought I would try and paint my fading red plastics on my KLR. I started on it yesterday even though weather conditions were not ideal for painting. I am still working on it but here are some pics of my progress so far.
First I started removing all the plastics, I started on the hand guards which were black and scuffed up pretty bad. I am hoping the paint will fill in the scratches.

Saweet.....And that poster rocks! I wonder if it's possible to do an urban camo paint scheme in bedliner? You know, black, white , and grey.

Looks great! I've seen a few KLR's on ADVRider that were completely painted with bedliner and I like the results. The KLR is a natural candidate for this application!
It also looks like we have the same supplier for our high-tech drying hooks. :-D

Aren't there multiple colors available for the bed liner sprays?

I was so impressed with TexBiker's idea that I spent yesterday out in the garage making me some spots on my tank to grip with my knees.

Yeah, I'd like to know as well. However, the black looks very good... :thumb:

Once my little Strom gets some more beauty marks on it I think I'll be doing the bedliner treatment as well. That really does look good.

I know the commercial applications (Line-X, etc) have multiple colors available, but I've only seen black in the consumer spray cans at auto parts stores.

Perhaps the next evolution for the bed-liner material would be to incorporate some type of design. McLeod's knee grip area looks great, a Dakar styled inspired bed-liner logo might acomplish the same affect and allow someone to further explore creative applications of the product.
I would not be opposed to would be artist experimenting with bed-liner stencile art on my old pick-up. I re-apply paint to it as needed with a sponge applicator and hi-temp BBQ paint.

Couldn't you use regular paint on top of the bedliner to do designs?

Applying paint to a textured surface might make a straight edge look blurred. Depending on the artist, that may not presnt a problem, especially if they are going for a "cammo" styled or perhaps pixilated pattern.

They also make a specific paint to paint plastics with. I believe a Krylon product is available. The only think I can think of with a lot of bedliner on a bike might be a little weight added. I know the Rhino stuff is kinda heavy. I know of a TLR that was painted with Rhino Liner once. That thing weighed a ton. I guess some bedliners now are not very heavy.
Looks good on the bikes. Nice job guys. :)

As I posted on my GS thread, the bedliner only added about 4lbs (tank, beak, head covers, side panels). For this type of application, you don't need a thick coat. A fully faired sport/touring bike would probably take about 20lbs of bedliner, though.

This guy is in OK City, but he can spray anything! He's done all of his own bathroom too! Application can put almost any logo/design on the desired item (bed, panels, floor...etc) take a look at the CJ that he coated in black! He's told me that he can add the coating to almost anything.

Casper,
thanks for the link. I was surprised to see that designs can be applied and still retains sharp detail on the textured surface.

No problem, I emailed Rick yesterday and asked him how many patterns/designs he could do, and he said (duh) it's only limited to the amount of space that he has to work with. He also mentioned that he has already done some fenders on bikes but failed to take photos as the customer wanted "plain jane" coatings.

Here are some pics of the KLR all finished, I am still debating on what to do with the tank area. The finish on the plastics came out okay, I need some more practice on spraying to get that even look.

I have been riding back there a couple of years, as far as I know it has not been a problem. People ride quads back there all the time, but yesterday it was way muddy and a lot of water so it was not much fun.
We need to try and get together this coming Sunday.

I've got a KLOL runaway radio banner that was left after a station promo. Couldn't get rid of it on eBay. Of course now that they are an urban Tejano station maybe I could ;-)
On my toolbox I have a 97Rock, and a Bowie sticker in that same style.
Dang. I'm old.

I ain't going to say I'm old but I remember when KILT played good music and then they went country. Used to be KLOL or KILT depending on who the DJ was.

Well, I won't say you're old either, but we must be about the same age ;-)
I remember waking up to the clock radio playing country on KILT, and thinking it was some kind of joke :eek2:

How has this held up on the aftermarket tank? I was wondering if the liner adhered better than paint. Even the Fusion paints peal off theses Acerbis tanks in a very short time. Did the liner stick?
