I now regret my decision to not handle the work myself :argh: . I figured since it was an insurance job I'd let the shop handle it. I actually got it back two weeks ago, for a day. Then I noticed that the side case bracket had a crack in one of it's supports, they didn't. So back it went :miffed: . Sigh!

Cameron's best day so far is 250 miles, round trip to the CW show in Fort Worth. I think he'll enjoy the ride out if we can make it, especially with some riding company.

Pardon my ignorance, but is Cameron a Wee-TWiT? I know a couple of Beemer riders that are considering bringing the kiddos (9 & 11) and knowing that other kids in the same range will be attending might help their decision.

Cameron's 16, if he makes it he'll be riding his Kawasaki Ninja 500. Don't let the Beemer riders keep from bringing their kids, Cameron always had a blast riding pillon for events like these when he was that age.

We're not sure they're ready for a trip of that length. It'd be a stretch for their parents as it is! If we get all the kinks worked out, we're actually thinking of making a weekend out of it by having a chase vehicle for the kids and luggage/gear while we lead on the bikes.

Just haven't found anyone to drive the chase vehicle yet...

That's something our family did.

Cameron's first long road trip (at age 12) was to the Top O' The Rockies Rally in Colorado. His mom tagged along in our mini-van with our daughter. I think she did it more as a way to make sure her youngest was safe :lol2: . Cameron would switch back and forth between us during the trip. He and I camped out at the rally. Mom and daughter stayed at a B&B in town. It was a great family trip.

Squeaky, I'm strongly considering bringing my 10 year old son. He's been begging to go on a "long" ride with me, and this one should be under 2 hours each way, so I might cave in. It's probably a go, but I'll decide for sure in the next couple of days.

I like to do that for a few reasons - it scrubs the tires if I've been off on the shoulder or in dirt/gravel, and also makes my body relax (I can feel the tension in my lower back when I do that if I'm not relaxed enough yet).

Plus it just looks cool - especially if I can sucessfully slalom the lane reflectors!

I'm thinking that I'll talk Squeaky into meeting in Waller at 2920 and 290 around 7AM. Then when we KSU about 45 minutes later, we'll be on-time for the Pie Run.

We'll either take 290->36 or just straight 6. Either way, its 215 miles from Waller.

OK - I was thinking of leaving out of good ole A-town with US287 to Mansfield
FM157 to FM917
FM917 to Egan
FM2280 to Keene (know where that is? :-P )
US67 to FM203 (west of Glen Rose)
FM203 to SH144 (short) to Walnut Springs
FM927 to Iredell
FM1238 to SH219
SH219 west to Carlton
FM1744 to US281
US281 to Hico and the Koffee Kup

Not cast in stone, just thinkin' :ponder:

I'm thinking that I'll talk Squeaky into meeting in Waller at 2920 and 290 around 7AM. Then when we KSU about 45 minutes later, we'll be on-time for the Pie Run.

What is the place on 290/2920 to meet up at? I just remember Shell stations... 362?

Squeaky

KSU will NOT be 45 minutes later unless you allow me to take my helmet off. That's the big deciding factor.

I think there's a Shell out there, but it might be farther north.
Becca - how about I just stay over in the Bat Cave on Friday night?

Uhhhhh. It's 215 miles of slab, whether we take 6 or 36.

Coming back will be around 250+ miles because we'll take some more fun roads.

If you have something to do in the afternoon, you might want to wave off on this ride. It'll be a 450+ mile day.

At 0600 hrs Saturday our Wx service is showing a line approx through San Antonio - Austin and points north. Last night it looked like most wet weather would run north of Hico but this morning its changed again. This is another system that has the weather folks challenged. There has been a lot of that this year and last. In any event it doesn't look like I'll make it now due to some home issues that turned up yesterday. By the time I can get away I'd have to average something over a hundred to show up late and while the bike is quite willing, I'm not. I find just letting it lean, no death grip on the bars, the bike usually will handle it pretty well. When you hold real tight, the wind will hit the rider causing them to telegraph unintended movement to the bars. :eek2:

Yes Mam. It's called a GoldWing.;-) Just Kidding.

Just try to stay relaxed and ride the wind. It's just another dynamic to riding. It can be fun if you can stay relaxed. ...and yes riding several hours in strong wind does get a little tiring even on the Wing and on the VTX.

rocketbunny
02-23-2007, 09:54 PM
I just find staying relaxed and letting the bike move under you works. Keep arms loose and don't worry too much. Worry makes for a death grip. Keeping it in a lower gear for ready power also seems to help me mentally.

I've ridden in some pretty bad wind. The V-strom doesn't have much fairing, so it should be fine. I know my ST barely notices wind most of the time.

At the tech day last week the wind was making the strom do weird things. On monday (equally as windy if not more) I took the luggage off (side cases) and put a shorter windshield on and it was much much better. I think the big givi cases act as sails for crosswinds.

Also though I had just raised the fork tubes at the tech day and later I adjusted the preload near the max on the front and back which may have had a very big impact on crosswind handling.

Also though I had just raised the fork tubes at the tech day and later I adjusted the preload near the max on the front and back which may have had a very big impact on crosswind handling. Side cases and tail bags can effect the aerodynamics depending on many things. So can windshields.

Most DL1K and 650 riders raise the forks to some degree just to improve handling at high speeds and in the wind. Raising my windshield makes my bike dance all over the road. Suspension can be a factor in that too. Weight also helps, but moreso if its centered and low. That's one reason why cruisers are less prone to 'wind dancing'.

Ive found on the whee that when I'm sitting upright in hard wind, no matter what direction, I'm a windmill and the bike dances all over the road. On my long trip last year I learned that if I scoot my butt back on the seat, lower my upper body down over the tank, the ride is smooth sailing. The difference is so significant that it's amazing. No wind dancing at all. (it also reduces fatigue on a long ride). It's actually quite comfortable.

Just my $0.03.98.

We'll see how the wind does - maybe I should go ahead & put my fork brace on this morning? It's gusting here, downpour in spurts.

I have to work this morning so y'all have fun.
I'm picking up the bike from Piper's this afternoon and leaving the truck there. If anyone in my area is going into or near NRH tomorrow, can I beg a ride with you so I can pick up the truck?
I'd rather have the bike with me than the truck. I'm lost without it.
It's been like my kid in the hospital.
I guess I need a 'life'.

I am trying to decide if I start out with the rain gear or not. Will find out shortly, I guess.

What did the Whee need to fix it?

What did the Whee need to fix it?I responded in the other thread (Tarrant county M&G).

At least have rain gear on the bike; you'll need it. Raining and gusting again as I type. (rain's been on and off again)

Looks like everything is clearing out nicely. 99% of the rain is gone as of 07:10, and the sky is clearing. The Zimmerman family will see you there.

I'm out. The weather is looking worse out east and is expected to become severe later today. It rains one day out of the month and it happens to be today. Go figure...

I started that way today at 10am. The wind did not make it enjoyable so I turned around. Have fun.

I thought the wind was bad this morning - doesn't hold a candle to what it is right now! :eek2:

I'm home but not without some pucker moments - this wind and gusts are dangerous. Here's hoping all make in home OK...

Chuck, Kevin, self and the gentleman on the ST1300 who's name I forgot  landed in Keene ~1340.
there was an officer directing traffic at the corner of 4th and 2280, didn't think much of it, but power was out at my apt when I got home. It just came back on so here I am posting that I survived! :rider:

We just got in and I know exactly what you mean, Chuck, about those pucker moments. I'll get a ride report thread started in a bit. I need to sit on the couch for a while...

I kinda suspected that there might be a local power problem.

The other ST1300 rider was Michael (PhotoBone) from Flower Mound. He said he was headed up SH360  - any north-south road is murder. Hope he gets there OK...

I just got back ok, I dropped in behind a group of 4 on 220 to 67 that turned off around Keene and then I fell in behind Rolan (I think) around Midlothian. Wind really was a challenge at times, wasn't too bad when at my back but gusts from angles made it interesting :eek2:

Hope everyone makes it back ok, despite the wind I enjoyed it and enjoyed talking to Becca and Patrical.

Look forward to next time. Be Safe.

Yes, pucker moments indeed.

Instead of going straight home as I should have, I took 2481 to Bluff Dale then east on 377 to Granbury. By the time I got to Starbucks the sky looked liked the little weather icons Music Man posted.

(Yes, if you have to ask, I did have pie and ice cream in Hico and a Mocha Frapp at Starbucks. )

I finally gave up on trying to get some reading in, watching the Strom blowing back and forth in the wind. I was seriously concerned that she would blow over!

On the way home, down 144 to Glen Rose, there were emergency vehicles directing traffic where a wooden power pole had been broken off by the wind.

It was still being held up off of the highway by the wires so traffic was still able to get through.

I hope everyone chimes in as they arrive home.
