While following my wife around Target today, I ran across some Garmin etrex GPS units for-get this-$24.99. Marked down from about a hundred bucks.
This was in League City off of Bay Area Blvd. They had 5, I bought one. Might be the same price at all Target stores though.
Good luck,
Scotty

I have an e-Trex. It will only tell you how to get back to somewhere you have been before and have entered the data. I need one that will tell me where to go.

It will measure speed in MPH, average, top and current speed I believe. You can enter coordinates if you know them. It is a basic unit, not a Streetpilot by any means. I just wanted to pass on the information I stumbled across.
Best of luck,
Scotty

I think these are a good option for geocaching too, IIRC. I might need to stop by and take a look at the one by my house.

I had the E-trex Legend (?). It was the one with 24Mb of memory. I quit using it. It was incredibly slow with screen redraws. Transferring map data over the serial cable took upwards to an hour and just ate up battery power. They did not get good satellite reception at all. However, for something like hiking, they could be useful. On the bike, I simply found it more hassle than it was worth. However... I like my 60CS a lot.

I had an ETrex Vista before my 76CS. It was slow and it did take forever to download map data. And with 24 mb it was short on memory. But if you told MapSource not to download auto routing (which the Etrex can not use anyway) it would hold quite a bit of data.

I used it to go to Deals Gap a few years ago and it held enough maps, waypoints, routes, etc to get me there and back on my chosen route.

There are a lot of better GPS units out there but for quite a bit more money.

For a starter GPS I think this is a good deal.

I purchased a like-new Magellan MAP handheld unit for $50 off of Craigslist locally. Found the mapping software at Academy marked down to $25.

I'm sure there are ways to enter waypoints that I just haven't discovered yet but for my uses, it works well. The main thing I wanted it for is the "bread-crumb" track it leaves of where I've been. I can always backtrack to where I want to go.

If and when I get the larger bike I want, it'll have a regular onboard GPS with full screen, etc but for what I'm doing, the little handheld Magellan works well enough (as long as I remember to clear the track and trip odometer before I start a new trip).

I have had one for about 8 years. It does do MPH, elevation, mileage ect. Also can mark waypoints but it does not have capability to load any maps.

I use it to check MPH when I get a new vehicle. I also use it as my speedo, mileage tracker, and elevation guage on my ATV when i ride the trails in Colorado.

I have used it on the strom before just to check the MPH. I have the handlebar clip mount.

I think we can expect the price of GPS units to begin coming down across the board. I noticed a few days ago that LG now has at least one model.

I use the tacho on my R100 bmw, in combo with a second hand on the dash clock, combined with the odometer, this way I sit at 4 grand, do five k's in three minutes, thus doing 100k's per hour, right? 5 grand, 5 k in 2.5 minutes = 120 kph.
Yep. So I was going down a highway between Eucla and Balladonia, (avatar pic) with a mate who had a Garmin gps, and he was saying we were doing 115kph, when by my method we were doing about 110. The distance we finally travelled was about a thousand k's, the gps was consistently "wrong" over various distances and speeds.
I've been doing it this way for about 25 years now, I've checked it through police speed traps and also DMV radar "traps". No problems.
Next week I'm gonna get a high ratio fifth gear, and have to learn all over again!!

I jumped in a taxi with my Mum t'other day, and the cabbie was new to Adelaide, when we took the first wrong turn I started looking over his shoulder at his gps thingy, :eek2: it was taking us around the long way some thing awful, and try to get him to use a paper street directory, nah, cho nuckin' fay wum (no way chum). :miffed:
I think these have different maps for taxi companies to make extra money by! LOL.
I was waiting for the price to go below $200 before I get one, but someone on this thread got one for $25!!! I think we're a bit ripped off here, but there's still people who pay shitloads of bucks just to be one up.:borg:
