Howdy,
:tab I have never been one to be really organized. No doubt, Txmedic will likely stroke out when he sees the disarray in my garage. Worse yet, I have curious little fingers eager to explore the colored cans and bottles scattered about the various shelves. I need an upright cabinet, preferably metal, that will lock/latch so I can keep out kids. Home Depot was a bust. Sears was a bust. What do you guys do?

Check out surplus office supply stores, Habitat for Humanity stores, in my travels around Austin, I ride through the back of the industrial and commercial strip centers, and there are all kinds of treasures being thrown out, and free for the asking, if you don't mind it being used. Of course, my wife says I am a packrat, my most recent find was 4" electrical pvc, schedule 80, 10' long, 2 full bundles, which is gonna be used as my new barn posts, sunk in the ground, and filled with concrete. In Huntsville, the state should have surplus sales somewhere.

Several years ago I lucked out and found a pair of upright storage cabinets at a used office furniture store. Good heavy duty steel units, not the lightweight stuff from Office Depot.
Other folks I know have picked up kitchen cabinets that were replaced when friends/neighbors/family remodel their kitchens. Overhead cabinets would be out of reach of curious small fingers.

Ikea even has low-profile, locking metal cabinets that are fairly inexpensive. Probably too small for most of what you're looking to store, but they may have expanded the offerings. You could also supplement one larger cabinet ($$$) with one or two of the smaller/cheaper ones along the side wall, and then you would still have the space on top of them to put things like your toolbox, tire changer, etc.
I wouldn't be opposed to scouting the store for you next week... but I'll need to leave my wallet in the car!

I got a couple heavy duty grey metal ones from an industrial auction for $10 each, companies like McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) or Grainger (www.grainger.com) have industrial duty ones. My personal choice is to build shelving in the garage with doors. Not a bad job getting staight cuts with a skil saw/table saw and assembling with wood screws/screw gun or air nailer.

$100 per liner foot up to 8' tall and 24" deep
ie a set of my custom built storage cabinets for your garage 10foot wide x 8 foot tall x 2' deep = $1000 installed.
not much you can buy for $150.00.

So I scored at Sam's Club a few days ago :dude:
Sandusky 36 X 18 X 72 metal cabinets. Model No: vf3r36187 Sams No: 675732 A
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/misc/IMG_1193.JPG
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/misc/IMG_1194.JPG
The shelves are not adjustable and are welded into place. The spacing works fine for me so no biggie. Shelves are rated for 150 lbs each. I can always add wooden shelves with a block at each end if I need more shelves, maybe even half shelves that are only 9-10" deep.
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/misc/IMG_1195.JPG
They lock so little prying fingers cannot get to the nasty stuff inside
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/misc/IMG_1196.JPG
Best of all, they were only $146.43 each!

For the small items you can get stacking shelves that might fit on the metal shelves and give you a little more storage for the smaller items. Just an idea.

Joyce, that is what I was thinking of with my comment about putting in wooden shelves. Basically, just put a support at each end and span the distance with a piece of 1 X 6, 1 X 10 or something similar. Of course, there will be the myriad little stacking and interlocking boxes for all the screws, nuts, bolts, etc,... ;-)

Tourmeister,
Revisiting an old thread here, but I am curious about your Garage Storage plans. Can you do a post review about those cabinets you bought at Sams Club? I looked, and found the same brand cabinets, but nothing for the price you mentioned in your post on them.
I am in the planning stages of my storage system now. We close on our house Nov. 15th, and the garage is the first thing I am going to tackle. 2 1/2 car garage. From my earlier posts, I was looking for some nice kitchen cabinets to mount... then waffled about Cubicle cabinets. Still unsure... What all did you wind up doing, and how you like the results?
I thought about an idea: Anyone have any feedback on this:
6' or 7' Vertical shelving turned perpendicular to the wall. But with inverted angle iron secured to the floor, and V track steel caster wheels mounted under the shelves so they slide on the "rail" tracks. They all stack together leaving space between one, but they slide to open other areas of the other shelves... ?
I have seen this in file rooms, and works well to conserve space. I want to maximize my storage space, but not consume all of the garage extension to allow room for 2 cars, the bike, and other gear.

The best thing I ever did was to find a homeowner who was completely redoing their kitchen. Their contractor was going to charge them $3k to remove the old kitchen cabinets, so I did it for half that amount and now I have solid oak cabinets in the garage, complete with marble counter tops. Everything is behind a door which really makes the garage look neat. I also built overhead hanging shelves. These are quite popular these days at the home shows, but being cheap, I built my opwn to hang above the garage door. You can get a lot of stuff to hang from these and they are completly out of the way. I can get the wife's SUV and my two motorcycles in the garage along with a lot of other stuff. Next time you are in Dallas stop by and I'll give you the garage tour.

I've started on this myself. In fact my first project was repairing some holes in the drywall (see book review section on Drywall), which finished up quite nicely. I have been to both Home Depot and Lowe's. Both hardware stores sell garage ensembles that include a variety of cabinets, open shelves, and hanging solutions. Judging from this year's travel schedule it will not be until late summer before this project is finished.

Thats what makes the world go round' n 'round.
Arent farmers still complaining about how hard farmin is these days? Even with Govt Sub's?
Once our economy moved from Farming & Ag, over the Industry and Manufacturing, doesnt the Manufacturing unions complain that they are losing their jobs?
We change from an Industrial Economy to a Knowledge Workforce, and its all the IT folks who complain that the cheaper jobs are being oursourced to India and elsewhere.
Its the evolution of economic cycles... dont be sore because he decided to do a job cheaper and get some personal benefit out of it in the process. You can pay $70 a week to have your lawn professionally groomed too. I just as soon pay a Mexican $15 for the same service without the uniform and the fancy truck with the digital graphics on the side. Thats more money for me!
And as soon as as someone who can come take my office, and do the same job as I do for half the money, is the day I start finding more lucrative sources of income. :trust:

I can find cheaper labor in fact. We can put all of em out of work by coughing up the $0.75 in gasoline it takes to mow the yard and do it ourselves. (I do mow my own lawn by the way) Then the Professional White guy, the Mexican, and the Pregnant woman, and the child laborers can all sit on an empty milk crate outside of a liquor store and complain how hard it is to be them. Is that stock 18" or 24" VCT tile?
I just tiled my garage with 12" Armstrong Stonetex VCT. Used white stone for the main body with a black edged border. Looks mint! It was my first D-I-Y tile job, but I am very pleased with the results. Even bought the rubber base moulding.
Need to get some pics of my setup... mine doesnt look as nice as the one you have your pic... but for my humble garage, it'll do.

It's just a garage right:mrgreen: I hear that all the time.
you'll get good wear out of the VCT. I bet it looks good.
That floor was an epoxy job. 6 coats: light gray and medium gray checkers with a charcoal border then two coats of clear on top and final polyurethane topcoat. The cabinets are my designed by myself and built at my shop.
This was for a client of mine.. Mine doesn't look this good. but I'm about to redo mine and update it to my new specs.

big cost of paint there...I have looked at the two part epoxy paints and they are proud of them...I tend to seal concrete with Tompsons and leave it at that...

Never said it was cheap.. but it will last a lot longer and looks awesome.
another thing we are getting into is polishing concrete and adding a fortifier/densfier. comes out to a high shine that will last even longer than epoxy. but of course it's more expensive. definately in the concrete coatings business you get what you pay for.
crap... nothings cheap these days

VCT is!
I think my Stonetex VCT was about as cheap as floor paint.
I scored my Armstrong for $0.40 Sq ft. I know thats not common, but heck, I couldnt pass that up. Now that my floor is mostly chalk white, I find myself sweeping and shop vac'in a whole bunch.... but afterall its just a shop floor right? Right... but its a purdy one too. :trust:
