I just picked up a BMW F650GS. I've been wanting a dual sport bike for some time. I know the little GS is not a true dual sport, but after looking at everything else, I came to the conclusion it was the only option for someone of my height (or lack thereof). I'll just have to make a few changes to it.
I took a few quick pictures. This is probably the last time it will be clean. ;-)

I'm headed for the Sam Houston forrest this weekend to see if I can get myself in trouble.
Anybody have any road suggestions?
Giddyup!

Congrats!
I like yellow. :chug:
Aren't those Rotax engines?
I like Rotax engines. ;-)
And yes, you'd have to be crazy to take an F650GS (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41699) to, like, Mongolia (http://www.surfphoto.com/viking/l.jpg). :-)

If you ride it like it's a dual sport, then it's a dual sport - see how easy that is?
Heck, I take my Sprint down gravel roads on a pretty regular basis, and even went a few miles up a mining road in Colorado a few months ago. It's more about what the rider does with the bike than the bike itself. I'd say that nice new 650 of yours is ready to take on almost any kind road you pick. 8-)

I think BMW started building the engines in-house a few years ago. But it is basically the same as the Rotax engines of the 90's except now they are fuel injected.
I've been following Striking Viking's ride. One of these days maybe I'll have the time (and the guts) to do something like that.
I do wish I had the legs for the Dakar version, though. That would be just about perfect.

While in Arkansas on my ST1300, my GPS routed me onto a gravel road by mistake. It was very steep and winding and I was scared to death (I knew if I dropped it I wouldn't have enough traction to pick it up). But once I got back on pavement I thought that would have been a lot of fun with a bike more suited for it. So that started my search. I'm definitely going to "ride it like it's a dual sport". I'm looking forward to finding its limits.

Chris,
Congratulations! Nice looking bike and great color. I'm always in the market for another bike and have always wanted another dual sport bike. Let us know how the ride at Sam Houston goes. I have been looking for used Dakar's among other bikes. Time to sell my Beemer!

Hey nice bike. Congratulations on the new bike. If you do go out into the Natl Forest, just be sure to be careful if you go on the trails. That bike can get stuck out there if there are any mud bogs. I had to help a KLR650 out once, and it wasnt easy. If you go on the trials just go with someone else. I guess there are pleanty of forest service roads to ride too tho, which would be much less aggressive than the trails out there. I need to go ride soon, there is a family enduro out there on Sept 12th thru Trail Riders of Houston.
Have fun.

I've seen a trail map on the internet. I don't know which trails are possible for my kind of bike. I want ot find someone who has ridden them who can tell me. I know a lot of people take their kids out there. I figure if a kid on a 50cc dirt bike can do it, I can handle it on my F650GS.

Scott (Tourmeister) will know. He'll be back late Sunday, but I'm sure he'll not only give you a route, but he'll want to tag along.

:tab I'm back ;-) And yes, I do want someone to ride with me to do the dual sport thing. However, I sure as heck won't be out riding the trails in the National forests!! I will however show you some fun gravel/sand/dirt roads in the woods.
That is a sweet looking bike Chris! Congratulations!
Adios,
chris

I didn't intend to get off on the trails. I was having fun on the gravel roads and took a wide, flat, dual tire track trail off the main road. It was easy for a while, then got harder. The problem was that it was too narrow to turn around. So I had to go deeper than I intended. The bike could handle what I was riding, I was just in a little over my head. I need to keep my "enthusiasm" in check. :-) I'm going to stay on the gravel or dirt roads until I know what I am doing.
I should be have a couple of Saturdays free in September. We'll have to find a day we can meet up and you can show me the dirt.
