Just a quick review of my 2nd gen iPod Nano 2 gb.

This iPod has been a big pain in the rear. It locks up on a fairly regular basis and the reset measures won't work. I have to let it run until the battery dies and it resets itself. I had a 1st gen Nano that was flawless but it somehow found its way into the washing machine

The 2nd gen just feels a lot cheaper than the first gen. I don't think I will get another Nano when this one fails (which I see happening in the not to distant future).

I have the first generation and as you said, it has been flawless. I bought Leigh a 2nd generation as a birthday present last month and haven't heard any complaints as of yet. Have you looked to see if there are any firmware updates available?

iTunes just had an update for it last week. I think some of the problem is that it is physically cheaper made. The click wheel on mine just doesn't work as well as the 1st gen and the case just feels flimsy.

Bum unit? If it's under warranty then find an Apple store near you for "repair": if it's at all complicated they'll often swap you a replacement unit. (Make an appointment using the online "concierge" so you don't have to wait around.)

I agree. My wife's sees regular use while running and working out. I used it quite a bit as well until I got my shuffle.

My sister's 8 gb 2nd gen Nano must be bum unit as well since it does the same stuff. The unit works with the occassional screw up like listed above but it is no where near the same quality construction as the 1st generation. The 1st generation units are built like tanks in comparison and I hate that Apple down graded the feel of them.

Maybe I will try the Zune (or what ever it is called) next time?

I'd give apple a call, I've had great service from their AppleCare folks.

You need to find a iPod Mini and swap in a 8gb CF card in place of their MicroDrive :trust:
