View Full Version : How To Remove Gas Tank?

I have a Stebel Nautilus horn arriving Monday. I'm going to remove the fairing and the gas tank in order to mount the horn to the Bandit.
Question: Is there anything particularly tricky about removing the gas tank? Any tips or online sources to provide guidance?
(I'm reasonably proficient with mechanical duties but figured I should ask.)
Thanks,
Greg
P.S. Yes, I'll provide of pics of the install...
Remove the seat, remove fuel and suction line from petcock, remove two rear bolts (watch for the cushion parts underneath) remove two vent lines from the bottom and unplug the fuel gauge sensor wire. Lift off tank and note where the pucks roll off to. This is assuming it still works the same as on the second generation Bandits....

Are the new Bandits fuel injected? If so there may be a few more hoses and wires connected to the tank. I know mine has about 6 connections to disconnect before you pull the tank off.

.... and before re-assembly swab a little silicone on the ends of the hoses so they come off easier next time.

Thanks for the advice.
Yes, the 2007 Bandit is fuel injected (no choke! :) ).

Does the gas tank need to be empty before removal?
No. Just be sure the petcock (on non-FI models) is not on prime or turned off, or on FI bikes, just disconnect the fittings. You might get a couple of ounces of gas, but that should be all.
It is best to do this while not smoking.

If its anything like my VFR FI, its going to dump gas, not just a little.
I doubt you'd have to to more then just raise the tank without removing the lines. both my VFR and the ST1300 come with some prop rods to hold the tank up while working under it.
I've not had a Zuki, so it may be quite different.

Again, thanks for the warnings. I'll be extra careful before pulling any lines. Also, I'll check if the hoses will provide enough clearance for me to get under there without actually removing the tank.
UPS just delivered the horn. I'm going to have to pull the fairing off to get this honker installed.

If the new Bandit's tank is similar to the 'Strom's, you will need to disconnect the gas line, one or two vent lines (depends on model year), and the electrical connector. I usually lose two or three drops of gas - not enough to wet a paper towel much...

Pics...Pics....What Pics? I want video tape of the install. I'm planning on doing mine next month or as soon as I get my horns.

Jay (txbanditrydr) has a great installation guide. Jay did a professional job and this article might give you some ideas for your own bike, look here (http://banditalley.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=4236).
oops - the site is being redone, Jay's thread is here (http://members.stormi.ca/BABBS/viewtopic.php?t=4236)...

I'd already hunted down that article. It's exceptionally well-written and documented.

The Stebel horn installation was successful. I took a ton of pics and will get some posted. I did not have to remove the gas tank (!). The hoses were long enough that I could prop the tank up on a couple of 2x4s and thread new wire underneath.
The horn works but it's not very loud. I'll start a new thread soliciting assistance.
