Put me down as a strong maybe. I may use this as an excuse to continue my hill country trip that was cut short on Easter weekend by that nasty cold front. I will be an overnighter for me.

Gilk51: I put myself down as a maybe only because we've had some personnel changes at work that will change the on-call schedule for me. Once that schedule is worked out, I'll know if I can go. If I'm not on-call, I'll be there.

Don't know yet, Clay. I am still thinking about it...
Looks like 280 miles from Arlington by way of Fredericksburg (67, 281, 16).
Google maps also laid out 323 miles via I35 (yuk) and skirting San Antonio (double yuk).
The back way is probably do-able in one day but we would have to start EARLY and not stop much. :ponder:

I just looked at the same routes/miles. I'd like to go but that would be the most miles I have done in one day, not to mention the departure time. My guess would be 05:00ish. The overnight deal obviously involves a bit more planning and expense. A mid afternoon departure on Friday wouldn't be bad I guess. Let me know what you decide.

Looks like the YO Ranch in Kerrville has some rooms around $100. I have stayed there before while working a task force deal down there. Pretty nice place. I think most of the lodging down there is a little high.

I think most of the lodging down there is a little high.
If that's the case, I would look into the Hill's Motel in Junction. It was only $35 for a double Queen room in April (rates may have changed). It would not be very far away from Medina for an overnight trip...
There are other reasonable places in Junction, too.

I was going to splurge a little and go for the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville but they said they are overbooked for that weekend.

I didn't think about Junction. Who knows?? I just get nervous about that many miles in a day. The longest I have done is around 400. I was fine after that, so maybe I would be for 600 or so :ponder:

I have the ITC50 program through the HRCA which gives me 50% off the room rate and the YO is listed for Kerrville. I plan to call them and see if I can book a room...

I believe I'll make this one. Planning on throwing a tent and sleeping bag on the bike and heading down early Saturday morning. Have some lunch and, of course, pie with you fine folks, then ride some local roads. I'll probably spend Saturday night at one of the local state parks. Or possibly this place: http://www.koyoteranch.com/ since it's right there in Medina and has some...amenities that are lacking at the state parks. Planning on heading back to DFW on Sunday morning after breakfast at the OST. Anyone who wants to split a camp site, the more the merrier.

That is my plan, but 100 additional miles added to my previous longest trip would only by 500 miles or so. I could get to the pie, eat the pie, get more than halfway home, then die. My bike could spontaneously combust and my rear burn like a crumpled overly cooked marshmallow. Then what?

So are you trailering to Bandera or what? How does that work these days? As mentioned before - trailers are for runs where the ride itself is NOT the destination. In my opinion, a Pie Run ride IS the destination - as such a trailer would not be appropriate.
Having said that, we'll be spending Friday, Saturday, and Sunday riding to, around, and back from Medina. So - in this case - one could say the ride to the Pie Run is now NOT the destination, thereby making trailer use appropriate.
However, our overnight host for the weekend has requested no kids, pets, or cars. And since I need a car/truck to pull the trailer I'm not going to be able to use the mobile garage on this run. :cool2:

So - in this case - one could say the ride to the Pie Run is now NOT the destination, thereby making trailer use appropriate.[digression] I find this whole debate of trailering bikes amusing considering the split judgment of 'trailering bad' and 'trailering good'. Given some rather harsh judgments I've seen here (and heard) about those who trailer their bike(s) and wouldn't be seen dead with their bike on a trailer, and the opposition of those who trailer nearly all the time. And now your somewhat 'black and white' criteria of 'when and when not' to trailer defined by the 'destination'.
We all know the world and life is not black and white but full of gray areas. :)

Lodging Info!
I looked around and priced a number of places and the cheapest I got was Econolodge in Kerrville @ $63.96/night for my family using the corporate discount. HOWEVER, I found a place in Comfort, TX called the Executive Inn which was recently remodeled that quoted $65+tax for double occupancy and $49.95+tax for single. He said that he was very open that weekend (I asked for Friday the 29th staying one night) and he is willing to give us a group rate that would be even better but he needs to know how many rooms.

We would have been happy to carry for you, but this will be a non-trailer run. I'm going lite though - taking the hump off the 'Busa and running the pillion seat. Did they tell you it was ride-in? What I read on the website was that the primitive sites were all a 1-mile walk from the parking area. I like roughing it, I just don't like carrying my gear or parking that far from the bike.

they have 2 different Tent Areas, they were telling you about the Back Country Primitive sites. You need to ask about Car Camping when you call, you will have to make reservations because they only have 30 drive/ride up sites. All drive up sites have water and electric (could be wrong, going off of the website).

Just reserved a tent site at Koyote Ranch. Very pleasant folks to deal with on the phone. Figured it would be convenient to roll into Medina, have lunch with y'all, drop my gear off at the campsite and head out to enjoy the local roads. Roll back into the campsite that evening, grab a shower, a burger and a beer, then hit the sack. Don't know how busy or loud it'll be, but not having to care is a happy, coincidental result of motorcyclists carrying ear plugs. And the price is within a few dollars of the state parks. It's not camping so much as it is "primitive moteling".

One of my work partners and his wife are coming as well. They live in Talty, southeast of Forney. I think we are looking at meeting at the Flying J truck stop at IH-20 and Bonnie View between 5:30 and 6:00 on Saturday morning. another good place to stay is the coyote campgrounds, think it is on 16, has camping and cabins, also jerry eat some pie for me we will be in colorado by that time, i hope:rider: hope to meet you guys on the next run;-)
Where is everyone staying? Anyone going down Friday from DFW and returning Sunday? Maybe leave Friday after work and make it part way down (Lampassas or Marble Falls?) Or maybe take 1/2 day off and ride down?
I was thinking about this one but I don't like to camp when temps are this high, so hotel sounds good, $50 per night even better.
I just booked Friday and Saturday night at the Executive Inn in comfort. The rate is $50 per night and he said as of right now they have plenty of rooms for that weekend. I don't think there is any group rate, $50 is already pretty cheap for a room. I hope to make it, as long as the weather and my schedule cooperates. They do have a cancellation policy of 1 day in advance.

I am making a whole weekend of it. I am going to Austin on Friday to see my sister and I will be staying in Cedar Park. I will get up early and meander down South down by enchanted rock, willow loop, etc and then stay in Kerrville Saturday night (I have to check my confirmation sheets but I think it is the La Quinta had a nice deal at the moment). Sunday I have to be back in Houston by 1pm so I will get up nice and early so I can still have a nice ride back instead of having to go I-10 to make good time.

Most travel any way they can!
The Pie Destination is only an excuse to ride.
There should be some folks heading out of San Antonio.
Often people pool together for a group ride but Solo riders are welcome also.
If you get there between 10:00 and 11:00, it's the "meet and greet" part.
Conversations break out at each seating area and afternoon rides are planned.

This is 1-up, 2-up or whatever up. Some of us that are coming from a pretty good distance plan to spend the night on Friday or Saturday and take advantage of the riding down there.
The main thing is to meet at the Pie Location on or before 11 AM to meet folks, gawk and talk bikes, and then eat lunch and, if you have room, eat some pie.
It is just that simple - ride and meet folk and eat.

I'm doing the 3 sisters saturday after noon and have no idea where to camp or when. If we eat at 2 or so and then do the sisters then I may be out of the area and need to camp elsewhere, but then again I don't know the area so I'm probably out of touch of reality.. I'm coming from just east of dallas at 5 in the morning and with the sisters in the plan it looks like about 950 miles round trip for me.. so I may want to crash after the sisters or somewhere in the middle... so advice would be great. but I also tend to fly by the seat of my pants and just don't what feels good at the moment..

It's a car tent site, which means it has water and electricity but it's intended for tent use. It's not the primitive "hike out a mile to your campsite" kind of thing.

I asked before, but definite plans probably had not been made yet by some of you. I'm riding from Leon Valley, on the NW side of San Antonio. Does anyone want to meet & ride together? If it's not raining, I'm willing to leave anytime between 8 & 10:30 am, from 1604 / loop 410, or the Helotes area. Please let me know.
For anyone who want to ride the 3 sisters I would recommend staying in Camp Wood or at a minimum checking with Chuger on road conditions. I can honestly say I enjoyed staying out there and that I had a better time riding because I had some one telling me what was where and how was each road so I didn't have too many surprises.
Man I still need to get my pictures and ride report posted.

Since I had never been there, I rode out to Medina today. As you go through Medina from the east on 16, the Patio Cafe is about the last building on the right. The sign you first see from the road actually reads, "Cider Mill Patio Cafe", not "Love Creek Orchards Patio Cafe", though the smaller sign on the door says it is Love Creek Orchards. Thought I'd post this as some of you may also have not been there before. Also, they serve from 11 to 3 only I think.

Sounds good, Steve. Let's just hope it doesn't rain. I don't have decent rain gear, so if there are showers, I'll be staying home. I saw on the news that the Frio river was flooding campers at Garner State Park. I would think lots of rivers, creeks & low water crossings in the hill country will be overflowing if there is any more rain.

gonna have to really watch and be careful at the low water crossings this weekend as the mud on the road will be slicker than snot on a doorknob.
People need to check road conditions before they leave. This general area received as much as 18" of rain overnight. That's right, in less than 8 hours, and its still falling a about the same rate. I doubt the water will go down sufficiently in many of the crossings to open the roads.

NWS is saying 40% chance of rain for Friday, 30% chance of rain on Saturday for Medina, TX. It's showing 40% on Saturday for Austin.
BTW, my brother and I will be there if it does dry out. So I guess add 2 more to the tentative list. :)

Now it's going to get really bad:
The heavy rain that caused massive flooding in the Hill Country on Wednesday morning might be just the beginning. Expect rains through next week, with intense showers possible starting this evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologist Mark Lenz said San Antonio, Austin and surrounding areas along the Hill Country face heavy rainfall again early this evening through Thursday morning. In pockets that could be as large as a county, 10 to 15 inches of rain could fall overnight.
Lenz warned that even areas that only get an inch or two of rain could see flash flooding because of the saturated ground.
He said Austin’s long-term forecast looks much the same as it’s been: between 40 percent and 50 percent chance of rain each day for the next week.

I hate to see anybody miss out on a chance to meet & eat pie, but if the rain keeps a few folks indoors this weekend it may be just as well. I have been to Medina several times and i don't remember seeing any place that could seat 60+ people at one setting, but then I have not been to the café where we are meeting. Hey, it will still be a blast even if we pack 60 of us into a 20 spot, especially if it's raining outside. Think of the stories that will told about this weekend's pie ride.;-) :rider: :eat3:
If we have to split up so we can eat indoors to stay out of the rain, there is a pretty good BBQ place in Medina that will hold 15-25 people. Don't know about their pie though. It seems like when I ate there a few months back that the lady (owner) offered me a desert after I finished my BBQ. It may have been pie.

So with all this rain, how will that effect the "sisters"? Do they get a lot of mud washed on them from runoff or have a lot of low water crossings. Part of my objective of this trip was to ride all 3 roads but with the forcast I am wondering if I should try again another time. I really was not planning on riding them wet.
Any reports from the locals in that area?

I've organized rallies in the Medina/Kerrville area for the past 4 years. This year it rained and rained. We had 2 skilled riders go down on the slick roads, one on 16 and the other on 337. Each rider lowsided on the wet tar areas that form in the road rutts and that pool up in corners and other sections of the roadway when hot.
I'm sure that most of the Texas riders are aware of this hazard, but thought it worth mentioning. Hwy 16 from the pass to Medina is full of tar areas that are as slick as an ice rink when wet. Ride around them and slow down.
The picture is the site of one of the accidents on 16 just north of Medina. The '04 R1150RT was totalled--the rider had minor bruises.

We are leaving around 0730 to get going before it get hot. Since I live in Friendswood we are going SW out by Brazos Bend Park and crossing HW 59 to take Alt. 90 to the other side of Eagle Lakes/Columbus then hit I-10 to New Braunfels and go up River Road to south of Wimberly and then take 473 over to Comfort.
I'd take Alt 90 out of Houston to Gonzales if it were me - much better than super slab but you are leaving later than me and I don't know what part of town you are leaving from.
There aren't many "good" ways on the north side of I-10 to get the San Antonio without taking the long way round.

List updated. The chance of rain here in Temple has been reduced for tomorrow and Saturday.
From the National Weather Service:
There are substantial forces operating on the the long-lived middle-
level low pressure center and the associated surface low pressure
system...such that we have the confidence that the system will weaken
gradually over the next several days. First...strengthening and
building Summer high pressure ridges will impinge on the
Oklahoma/Texas storm system from both the east and the
west...causing the low pressure center to "shear out" (become less
circular)...and lose strength in the process.
Moreover...in the lower levels...a weak frontal system will
continue to slip into the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma. Moisture
will begin to spread northeast along the weakening and slowing front
.Rather than continuing to spin about the low pressure system
while producing serious flash flooding. The moisture will splay out
along the boundary...and across West Texas as well.
All of this will take some time...but during the next 4-5
days...the incredibly life span of this low pressure system will come
to an end. Rain and thunderstorms will continue...but in a less
concentrated fashion...as opposed to the flash flood events near
the core of the circulation during previous days and nights.
Don't give up yet!

I'd take alt-90 all the way to Seguin. Seguin to New Braunfels is about 20 minutes. At this point depending on your time you can take the River Road or connect to 306 at Gruene. 306 is a straight shot to 281. Turn right at 281 & go 3 miles turn left onto 473 to Kendalia & to Comfort.
If you take the River Road from New Braunfels when you get to the end of it in Sattler turn right & go for a few miles to 306 & turn left & head for 281. Follow the directions above.
Watch the weather. If there are not advisories against driving in the area of our M&G and you are not afraid of getting a little damp, a great time can be had by all. I have ridden the area and the 3's right after a situation similar to the one we are in now and the scenery was fantastic. All the streams & rivers were flowing and the terrain was clean and glistening like a bright star. Remember water runs off quickly in the Hill Country so flooding usually is short lived.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for a break in this mess.
Oh, and most importantly what Bandera says is real. The slicks are to be respected. On the ride be on the lookout for washed up sand & gravel or rocks due to recent rains. Ride defensively the whole weekend. Riding in an aggressive mode on the 3's can only end up hurting yourself or a fellow rider. Even if you only hurt yourself it can put a damper on the rest of the weekend for your buddies. Save the contests for the track. Please!

Yeah, I'm looking at that too........ but if you zero in a section S of Hamilton is flood status to just S of Rt 84.
One option is taking 218 E to 16. I'd rather stay on 281 if flood status has improved by tomorrow am.
Then veer off east to Llano somewhere.

Note: as of now ALL roads into Llano are flood/closed status EXCEPT 16.
Looks like an option may be S 281, W 581, W 190 in Lometa, pick up 16 S in San Saba, S into Llano.
That is providing 281 is open (aka non-flood status) S of Hamilton tomorrow morning.

Just a point of interest: Hwy 16 is WAY better to ride down than 281 in terms of scenery and some curves. It's no 337/336/335, but it is fun. Given this information, I may adjust our route (normally I35-Hwy29-Hwy 16 in Llano) to taking 190 all the way out to San Saba, then come down 16 all the way to I10.

This looks to be a very wet weekend and I'm not interested in getting soaked. :storm:
According to NOAA the chance for rain is 30% at 7am Friday when we're scheduled to leave Katy. And it just goes up from there. By noon the rain chances rise to 40% for Katy. Of course we would have made it to San Marcos for lunch by then, but it seems they expected to greet us there with a 50% chance of thunder showers. :argh:
Assuming we somehow managed to miss all of that... On Saturday we'd make the Medina stop for pie, head out toward Leakey for some fun on the Twisted Sisters, and play dodge ball with the showers to the tune of 40% and 15 mph winds. And that's for the whole day. :thumbd:
Come Sunday for the return leg, we've got a 40% chance of showers before noon with a 50% chance there after. And that's all the way back in to Katy.
I'll be here at the house -> :coffee:

It is sunny here for the moment, I have a brand new front tire mounted with zero miles I want to scrub in today before tomorrow. I would not want the first few miles on a new tire to be in the rain.

Less than 1/3" of rain here today so far 335,336,337 all open.Just spoke with Deb at Drose inn in Leakey and they had less rain than us all roads open except
1120 this due to rocks on road.Would advise anyone to ck. TxDot road conditions map zoom in for a better view.
Things can change by the hour in the hill country.Ride safe.Gear up.

Well, I'm out.
This looks to be a very wet weekend and I'm not interested in getting soaked. :storm: ...
Aah, come on. You got to practice last weekend and all. :storm: You should be ready to go.:lol2:

I don't need any more practice in the rain. Been there, done that, got the dirty bike to prove it. ;)

I would have to say my only concern is for the people that live out in the hill country and the fact that they are having to deal with A LOT of WATER  . I would really like to be in the country this weekend, I just don't want to add to the problem.
So as much as it pains me, I am in agreement with Keith that we will not be venturing out that way this weekend. That's not to say we will not be riding in our area just not to far from home so if the storms decide to hit us again I won't have to get a paddle for my motorcycle. She doesn't do water crossings to well :-P ... a little to low to the ground. Ya'll have fun and be safe.... :rider: eat some pie for me (I like apple) :eat:

I'll be leaving tomorrow morning, heading south. If I don't show up in Medina Saturday, I guess the bike found some pontoons and decided to go for a drift. ;)
Here's hoping for sun and only scattered showers.

Anyone else from the DFW area made a decision yet? I have not seen any confimation of the people staying at the executive inn making a decision. Just wondering if anyone will be there Friday and Saturday.
I am still waffling. I want to see the weather update early tomorrow to make a final decision.

Susan and I will take a hard look at this in the morning. Our daughter-in-law told us this evening that her mother (who lives in San Antonio) said that Bandera and Medina are under water. I have heard no other confirmation from anyone on here, so I think that may be old news, if news at all.
Several have mentioned 281 - we plan to stay west of 281 and take 1187 to 377 to 16 and then 87 in Fredericksburg to Comfort. We'll see how that goes.
I'll post in the morning when we leave and if we decide to cancel...
Everyone ride safely &, if it isn't going to be fun, do something else that is. You don't get any points for being miserable...
(please note that some folks have fun in the rain) :-P
(their parents never let them play in the rain when they were kids) ;-)

Well its Thursday afternoon and still raining. Getting out my driveway is going to be a chore but I'm still wanting to go. I'm in the DFW area and I'm not making a final decision until I get up Saturday morning. Curious about any others from the area and what your take is on this rain.
I'm not sure what we are doing, either. We probably won't know until late tomorrow night. I will try to post up then.
i went through low water crossing a few months ago
one i had crossed just a few weeks before
thought there was a few inches of water but there was a huge chunk of road missing, washed out from the rain; had to wrestle the bonnie out of knee deep water!!! (my wrist is still messed up)
so if y'all go watch for the water on the road!!!
i bought that darn Triumph jump suit today, if i can figure it out i might go (kinda put in on like a diaper :ponder: ), but no waterproof boots yet

I plan to call the restaurant today and give them an adjusted headcount and to get their current road conditions, too. Jen and I are planning on coming down this afternoon on the bikes (with the kids!) but if it is an absolute monsoon then we will take the cage.

I'm still waffling on this one too. I don't mind rain, but neither do I relish the idea of riding all day in it. Throw in lightening and potentially closed and/or flood damaged roads and it gets even less appealing. I'm keeping a close eye on the weather and counting on eye-witness reports from those of you heading that way today.
My current plan is to leave here early, early, early in the morning - but I won't make the final call until this evening. So those of you already heading that way, be sure to post some reports.

I am still in. Leaving for Austin around mid-day.
I am leaving here in a little bit. Plan to stay at executive inn tonight and tomorrow. Rain chance 40% for Sat/Sun down there, odds I can live with. More chance of rain today but hopefully not too bad. Look for my blue wee strom at the hotel (one of many I know). We can hook up for dinner tonight.

Update no rain here last night or this morning.75and humid 70% chance of rain
today with 1/4" predicted-chance of flooding possible looks like C.Y.A. to me. Better safe than sorry.
Oh well looks like it's time to get on that other entertaining motorized fun machine the tractor and catch up on some mowing.

Friday at 1100 - we are out.
Too much chance of running into rain either on the way, while there or on the way back.
Dang - I was really looking forward to this trip but the Hill Country in the rain is not really a fun place to be on a motorcycle.

I just made it to Cedar Park a little while ago. I am soaked! From sweat that is. ;-) I got just a few sprinkles on the way here but otherwise it was warm and sunny. Cedar Park is currently low 90's and mostly sunny. I was really hoping for some rain to cool me down.

It didn't rain a drop here today. The sun has been out since around 2pm. It turned out beautiful and would have been a real nice day for a ride except I had work to do around here.
See ya'll at 11 in the am unless I have to make a detour or two because of low water crossings.

Weather looks nasty in Katy tomorrow - 60% chance of showers. But the rainfall totals are not that great. I did see where there is a "less than 10%" chance of SNOW for Medina though. I suppose they are simply covering all the bases (but I gotta tell you - I lost a great deal of respect for NOAA on that one). At any rate, 30% chance in Medina - which was what we had here in Katy today and we only got a sprinkle.
As such, the bikes have been serviced and we might make a day run of it. :wary:

Ran out to Medina today from San Antonio, and other than a few minutes of showers on the way out and then again once we got back to Comfort to meet the other TWTers for dinner, it was dry and the roads were great. Neither visibility nor traction was compromised by the rain.
CONSTRUCTION on 187 between 337 and Lost Maples State Park (north of Vanderpool), so those on street bikes should avoid that area unless they are comfortable on loose gravel.
NO WATER CROSSINGS to deal with today on 16, 337, 187, or 39.
The roads are mostly clean, with a little mud and dirt tracked out onto the roads from the trucks leaving their farms.
Pics in a little bit...

Keith come on down!!..if ya need a place to crash i have a spare bedroom with a bed on the floor you both are welcome to it and put the bike in the garage... Len Thanks for the offer Len. We had to cancel the dogs day care on Thursday when it looked like we would not be able to attend. We could still board him, but the kennel doesn't open until 7am and we need to be gone well before then. As such, it's gonna have to be "out and back" or nothin at all. But I REALLY appreciate the offer! THANKS!
This will give Joyce her first LOOOONG day in the saddle of her Mean Streak (looks to be right at 500 miles round trip). Should make for an interesting day. :cool2:
Having said all of this, we still need to check the weather when we get up for any changes (like snow) in the forecast. We also have a stead fast rule to not start out in the rian. Don't mind getting caught in it, but I ain't gonna start out wet! ;)
