I had to redo the brackets because I had too many poll options (max of 10). WC, did you vote? I only see two votes registered?!

37 here ... well 38 pretty soon. The last couple years went by quite quickly. Have been together with my wife for 12 exciting years, 7 of it married (kind of unusual on this board I guess ;-).

I've been riding for about 23 years with a 10 year gap in between. Yeah, I started when I was 15 with a 50 cc "bike", soon traded up to a 150 cc (man, was this thing fast when I was 16) and later to a 250cc. Some years and a couple crashs later I sold that bike and gave up riding for a while. I got back into riding with a '96 VFR about 6 years ago. My first impression back then was that I should have bought a bike much earlier. Haven't regretted a single day on the bike, although sometimes work and other hobbies have a higher priority. I guess I'm not totally bike crazy. ;-)

Since everybody is yielding up a few additional stats about themselves, here's a little more about me:

Been riding since I was about 13 or 14, starting out on a friend's Honda 100 then moving up to a borrowed Yamaha dirtbike one summer. Learned how to (very slowly) operate the clutch and shifter on the Honda, and all about wheelies, sliding around and falling down on the Yamaha. It was a blast.

Got my own first bike ('81 KZ 550) when I was @ 23, and have had a few other bikes since then, putting in around 45k to 50k miles altogether, with most of that just in the last 4 years. Single and never married, but haven't given up on the idea yet. ;-)

I've always ridden with "older" riders..can't learn as much from someone your own age with little road experience...
When I was first starting out, I did learn a lot from older riders, but there are a few things I learned from riders my own age, too. Granted, they were mostly what not to do! Things like Don't run from the cops, 'cause no ticket is worth dying for, and Don't go flying through green-light intersections, 'cause Murphy's Law is still in effect... Little things like that, y'know?

After burying a few of my peers, I became a much better, more safety-conscious rider, but I still make mistakes, and I'm still a student. I've been a licensed street rider for 26 years, and I pick up new info all the time, from magazines, 'net boards, BS sessions with other riders... Every day is a learning experience, if I allow it to be.

30 wasn't bad, I didn't feel like my parts were past warranty till 40. Barrin a crash I think I'll keep it together for a while yet. :)

I learn new stuff all the time, especially with this "group" thing. I've never been a group rider before getting hooked up on the net with folks, always alone or 1 friend usually.

Having read thru the comments (seems the poll may have been superfluous after all, Scott!), I am wondering which age we should be talking about: chronological, or emotional.

It seems to me that riding is more a function of the latter.

I'm 62/19. It appears I am the only one in the top category (so far) -- so do I win a prize? (Yeah, yeah, don't give me that stuff about "the ride is the prize"... I want to see the MONEY!) :-D

Hi Scott - thanks for the reply.

No doubt I'm still relative young, compared to some... I was just going by the survey counts. I hope I'm still riding when I'm 74!

Well, now that I think about it, I'll be glad if I'm still riding next month!!
;-)

It's finally getting cold here in Indiana... I got a short ride in yesterday, before the cold and snow came to town. It was around 45F, which is about my lower limit since I have no heated gear. I rode up to Versailles, IN to help my daughter & son-in-law look at used bikes at a shop there. It was about a 75 mile trip. It was appartent that I was having a net heat loss, as I was pretty cold by the time I got home. Got to get wired!

Today there is about 5 or 6 inches of snow on the ground, forecast low for Friday night is zero F. This is when I forget about Texas summer, and think Texas weather sounds good...

I am 31 (still hurts to say that) as of Dec 4. about 10 years riding exp. with a few gaps

Started at about 14 on '71 Yammie DT1, the only way it got up a hill was if there a longer one to go down before.

Started really riding in 1993 on Suzook Bandit 600 (Stolen :angryfir: > Gap 1)
Restarted on '99 Triumph Legend (Stolen :angryfir: :angryfir: > Gap 2)
Rerestarted on current mount, '03 Triumph Sprint ST, (locked & garaged :biggun: )
About 40-45K total miles, (those gaps really dented ride time), the exact total is not knowable, as the odo cable on the Legend busted and I rode it like that about 6 months. ive got about 12k on the Sprint so far.

Also trail riding in CA for about 3 years on XR600 (sold)

One wife, 8+ years, (married, not her age!!), daughter almost 3, and son 1.5 months

I hit the half-century mark next October. On my second marriage and today is my 21st wedding anniversary. I have one stepson that is 23 and the wife and I have been together for 24 years next February.

Originally from AZ but my retail career has taken me to NM, NV, So Cal, No Cal, and finally to Texas in 1991 which culminated a 5 state, 10 address series of moves in 10 years.

I haven't ridden since I left Tucson (prior to the first marriage) but am out and about looking for something, probably an ST1100 or a Connie but I'm not locked in to either. My prior bike was a 1978 KZ650 purchased new and used mostly for commuting. The longest ride I ever took on it was from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Tucson.

My son attends UH/Montgomery College/University Center in pursuit of his Bio-Technology degree and has worked for Lexicon Genetics for about four years. The wife is also in retail (she has to work tonight which is why I have time to type this) and has been on her job for 15 years.

I like this group a lot and hope to meet some of you in the future at either PO's or King's one of these nights. I don't have much to offer in terms of war stories, but look forward to gaining some insight on bikes and gear.

Phew... I feel like I just come out of a confessional, and I'm not even Catholic.

Been back into ridin' for about four years now - started back with an '84 Kawasaki ZN1100 (KZ, just different letters in '84 and '85 for some reason) then bought my '99 Fatboy in October '03 and clocked about 12000 miles on it last year.

Coming in at 50 but closer to 51 now and headed for first marriage in September.

Started riding at age 14 on a 1964 Honda 90, eventually made it to a BMW R75, 14 years and 100K miles later. Gave it up for almost 20 years due to financial difficulties. Started riding again in April of 2000 on a '99 BMW R1200C and have since added a few other bikes and approx. 120K miles for a life-time total of 220K. Plan on ridin' til I can't hold a bike up any longer--then maybe make one into a trike and ride some more! :dude:

Adios,

Looking at the distribution, and thinking about articles I've read about the US motorcycle population age distribution... I would bet it is representative of the membership.

And, further, I would wager the membership is representative of the m/c population as a whole. After all, we are all just regular people. Except Ducati riders... and cruiser riders... and maybe BMW riders... and especially dual sport riders... and those who use WD-40 on their chains...

I'm 31, married for 5 years in April, first child due in December.

Kinda hits you when you type it out. I sure don't feel like I'm 31 (though I'm not quite sure what 31 is supposed to feel like). I've known my wife for almost 10 years (5 dating, almost 5 married) and it feels like it was just yesterday that we went on our first date. It's funny how fast time moves these days. I remember being a kid and wishing that time would speed up because it took forever for class to end, or Christmas to come. I guess I should have been more careful about what I wished for

Two roads diverged in a wood
and I took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference

A little off topic... but this is my favorite Frost poem. I'm reciting this by heart, so please forgive any minor discrepancies.

Some say the world will end in fire,
some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire,
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if I had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate.
To say for destruction ice,
is also great and would suffice.

Total retirement would be nice. I hate having to actually work for money. I feel like, after all the years of working and putting up with the expletive deleteds out at the plant, I should just be given one of those cards like FEMA hands out and be able to go buy what I want. I've got enough retirement income now to pay the bills and buy the food. I have to work to pay property taxes and buy stuff. At least I set my own schedule now. I can go when I want to. I work for myself.

But, I look forward to Social Security checks in 9 more years. That'll let me forget the work place entirely. I'll probably do small engine work here in my shop just to pass the time if nothing else. But, I won't have to. At least I have health insurance. That's a good thing.

The forties were okay, I guess. My kid didn't leave home until three years ago, so I guess the fifties are where it's at for me! I'm still young enough to do things physically and old enough to see the light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train coming.

Based upon my clickie, I am on the downhill side of the bell curve. Scott, I am guessing the distribution is accurate.

For the record, my twins are older than many of y'all. We just started the third generation riding. Santa delivered my grandson an XR50 for Christmas. He is almost 5, my kids are 32, uggggggg ... Let's see, that makes me 54 at the moment, but my b-day isn't far over the horizon. People tell me I look 40, and I know for a fact that I act far younger, most of the time. Life is too short to not laugh, therefore I laugh.

I forgot who said it, but I have "graduated" myself ... three times (not that I am proud of it mind you), so I am done. The only women in my life are my X aka "granny" and my daughter and that is plenty. Eight motorcycles, starting up a motorcycle import business, self employment (itinerant architect), riding, planning rides and planning a move to southwest Austin in the next year keeps my days full.

I know one thing for certain, my days are full beyond measure and God had blessed me beyond my wildest dreams.

Eight motorcycles, starting up a motorcycle import business, self employment (itinerant architect), riding, planning rides and planning a move to southwest Austin in the next year keeps my days full.

I know one thing for certain, my days are full beyond measure and God had blessed me beyond my wildest dreams.

The grandkids are the fun part, I've got 4 kids (oldest is 31) and TEN (10)grandkids...............and I'm 46:uhoh:

I'll be 26 in 2 days and on 2 of the boards I frequent I'm one of the old people... :rider: I love coming to this board because I feel like a noob since I've only been riding for 6 years. I can get pretty much any motorcycle related question answered here! :eat:

I turned 65 8 days ago & now qualify for Medicare. I bought my 1st motorcycle in September of '62, a 250 Ducati Scrambler . Have not stopped ridding since.

One of the best times resonantly was when my son (42) starting ridding again. We race the STORM hare scrambles series. One race last summer he started one minute behind me. He did catch up, but I managed to hold him of the last lap (11 miles) 'till 2 turns from the finish, I went wide. A photographer captured the moment, with me in front of course.

You young rider keep it up.
You meet the best people on motorcycles. :chug:

My dad sold his Honda Shadow earlier in 2005 and unfortunately we never got the chance to really ride together much. He just never had quite the passion for it that I do. I'm buying a more touring oriented bike for the streets later this year and plan on riding out to northern AZ on my first big trip. I can't wait for that!

As far as meeting great people... I've met and ridden with probably 15 - 20 of the TWTex people and everyone has been great so far. Very skilled riders, mature riders and they always seem to put safety first. It's something that wasn't overly prevelant in my riding groups of the past. Thus the reason I got away from them.

Scott has done a great job bringing people together with this site! :patriot:

Since I am slow, you will probably catch up! :trust:

Funny Fact: My wife is 13 days older than me. In the 2000 census, your age is based on what it was on April 1st (dunno why  ), anyway - that listed her as a year older than me! hee hee...

I'm 33 and have been riding for only a month now (as of today). So far I have about 800 miles under my belt and I am loving every minute of it. Hopefully I can add another bike soon to my garage so the woman can ride with me without hanging off the back of my bike.

Umm, they're supposed to hold onto you - real close - so that they're not falling off. Helps keep you warm in the winter, too :trust:

I like the way you think, make sure you pickup something you'll really be comfortable with:rider:, you know, on the days she may not feel like riding!!!

Exactly my thinking as well...of course, she can pick the color (within reason). :trust:

I like riding with her, but it is definitely less nerve racking without her on back :nono:

Wow, with 335 people responding to this poll, it really is the truest bell curve I've seen (other than test scenarios and textbooks). I guess the motorcycle community really IS just a slice of what the world has to offer.

Maybe you should get rid of the Candy Striper Uniform?

Do they even have the volunteer Candy Stripers anymore?

I remember waking up one time when I was home from college to this girl in a pink striped uniform asking me repeatedly what my name was. She even went so far as to give me a hint. "Chris, what's your name?"

Thinking I had a really bad hangover, I couldn't believe someone was pestering me like this. Finally, without opening my eyes, I said "Joe Rodriguez". That illicited a small scream. At which point I heard my mother say I was alright.

I was in a hospital room with a chipped ankle and severe concussion. I still don't remember the accident, but evidently a car backed out in front of me in the High School parking lot. The strap on my previously crashed helmet gave way.

Oh, those were the days. I was visited by the young lady every day for a week.

Sorry for the trip down partially lost memory lane.

I'll be 45 at the end of May. Started riding a minibike when I was 8. My first street bike was a 100cc Dual Sport I got at age 17. Had it until 1993. Got an '85 XL350R in 1987 and kept until 2000. Moved up to a 2000 XR650L and traded in for an '03 DRZ400S. Traded the DRZ in only 6 months later for an '04 DL650 Wee Strom that I am now selling for an '06 KLR650.

Summary: I have been riding for 37 years and have owned 10 bikes. :flip:
