Has anyone put the flashing LED valve caps on their bike? Packaging says "for off-road use only".

I'm thinking they might be a cheap addition for added side visibility.

Thoughts?

if you use amber, they cant say anything because it is an approved color for use in the front or the back, red can only be used on the back.

I know blue isn't permitted either on the street because it's reserved for emergency personnell.

I think if you're going for added visibility at night, you might want to look into reflective wheel stripe tape (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Reflective-Wheel-Stripes-Rim-Tape-for-16-inch-wheels_W0QQitemZ140113151681QQcmdZViewItem).

They are a must have if you are going to be on "Pimp My Ride" or some show like that. Otherwise, pass on them.

Seems that I recall someone on another list using these and they goofed something up. Wish I could give more information, but memory doesn't serve on this. Just some discussion about the added weight of the devices and centrifugal forces messing up a valvestem or tire or something.

I had some interest in them before that discussion, and passed on them because of that.

But the chance to get on Pimp My Ride is a big draw...

My biggest concern about adding any device to the top of my valve stem is what happens if it breaks. In my opinion, it creates a weak point that could allow the air to leak out quickly if the item should break. YMMV, I've never looked at the lights before so it may not be an issue with them.

I read somewhere they added extra stress to the valve stem, reputedly causing breakage or leaking.

The Blue thing is...quasi, the DPS won't make an offical 'stance'. The code states that no blue beacon on the front of a non-emergency vehicle...

I on a whim, tried them once... inconsistent 'light' activation, and I figured it would take an approximate 80mph+ for the 'light' blur to register as a full circle. :-)

I had a pair, called fireflies that used watch batteries and were pretty neat looking at night. On an afternoon ride one of them broke the valve stem, ruining the remainder of the afternoon. Had to ride a friend's bike to get my truck and trailer to retrieve the bike. Valve stem was broken in half.
