View Full Version : Oils..mixing Synthetic issues?

yesterday riding home from work, I had pulled in the clutch for a minute while on the feeder to get into my jacket with my throttle hand. The engine died and of course, the oil light came on (always lit when ignition is "on" and engine not) Seeing the oil light, I pulled over instantly. I've seen one come on before with the bike running and that ended up expensive. :-(
Panicing and trying to figure out what killed the engine, I notice I can't see the oil in the level guage. Got off the bike, stood it perpendicular to the ground and even leaned it toward me...and still no oil.
Luckily I was near a Shell station, where I promptly bought some oil of the same Wt I use and filled approx 2/3 of the quart into the engine for the ride home.
Question is...I had just put in Motul Syn 10w40...now on top of that I put Shell only-one-on-the-shelf 10w40.
Are there any effects to mixing synthetics with other oils like this?
My pocketbook really dosen't want to go by 4 more qts of Motul to replace in the engine....am I risking anything?
Thanks-

I'm no bike mechanic, but I have been told by more than one, that topping off your bike with ANY type oil won't hurt it. But I won't risk it. Call me paranoid, but a few bucks for new oil is better than a LOT of money for a new motor.

:tab The more important issue is what happened to all the oil you just replaced? Why was the bike so low? Hondas are not known for using up oil. My VFRs would go 5000 miles and not use up a drop.
:tab The topping off thing is usually safe to get you home. However, I have read that mixing of some oils can have a negative affect on some of the additives. Apparently, these additives react with the other oil and basically self destruct. There is still enough lubrication left to work in the engine, but any special benefits you may have been getting from running the expensive stuff is reduced.
:tab But then, you can't believe everything you read on the internet! The man to ask is Mike "Oilguy" Guillory. He's a VFR/SabMag rider here in Houston that spent his career at Shell playign with oil. You can also check with Scootr here on the TWT site, he's and oil guru as well. Just shoot him a PM.

I'll echo what Scott said ... it's basically the lowest common demoninator. Mixing oils is ok, so long as you base your maintenance decisions around the least effective oil you have in there. You can mix synth and dino, just don't expect the long term life that synth provides. You can also mix oil weights, but again ... plan for the lowest common demoninator.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like it might be ok for a little bit, so I'll probably just run another month/800 mi or so then change it.
That way, I can trick the finance side of my brain into thinking it's time anyway.
( I'll check with those two Guru's here too)
About the low level...
I know modern bikes/Hondas aren't into eating good amounts of oil, but then again RC51's are a little quirky (I'll have to search some of my RC sites)
Also, beating the 'ell out of the thing Saturday at the Trackday may have helped it's appetite?..I don't know.
I changed the Oil before the (rain)Ride on the 23rd....and I can see myself maybe topping it off short...but not THAT short.
Who knows, I'll just keep a keen eye on it and see.
