Biker fails to notice missing leg
TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese biker failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier, and rode on for more than a mile, leaving a friend to pick up the missing limb.
The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, on Monday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.
He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.
The man and his leg were taken to a hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.

From the English Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/14/biker_mislays_leg/):
A Japanese motorcyclist failed to notice his right leg had been severed below the knee in a collision with a motorway central reservation, and he travelled a further 2km before spotting he'd left something behind at the scene, the Guardian reports.
Company worker Kazuo Osada, 54, was on a jaunt with 10 other bikers yesterday when he failed to negotiate a bend. However, he was "unaware his right leg had been severed below the knee apparently because his attention was focused on the strong pain he felt from the crash", according to police.
He clocked his loss when he subsequently arrived at a junction, and a fellow biker obligingly popped back to pick up the missing limb. Mainichi reports he was whisked to hospital, but whether surgeons were able to reattach the leg remains unclear.

Most likely his mind was denying what he saw. I'm not surprised at all.

Most likely his mind was denying what he saw. I'm not surprised at all.Not uncommon, actually. Trauma has a way of stimulating self-preservation in the body. During and shortly after a trauma such as that, several hormones and neurotransmitters are released in a flood that 'numb' pain locally and centrally in the brain. By 'numb', I mean that self-awareness of pain is greatly diminished or even totally blocked in the brain, and several endogenous chemicals locally numb the injured area. I'm sure some of you are aware of what an adrenaline rush does.
However, as the trauma-induced response begins to wear off, so does the numbing effect. I experienced this once during a horse incident to discover an hour later I had 3 crushed fingers. I'm sure you can find similar anecdotal accounts from others in accidents, etc.

Well, it would interfere with proper braking technique...

Now you know why I actually use my rear brake, just to make sure my leg is still attached.

I cut my finger to the bone once and there was no pain at all...
The only sensation was the warm blood flowing over my hand...
But the leg below the knee?
:eek2:

Wonder if he was thinking "wow I feel 10 pounds lighter; I've either lost a good portion of my leg or took a massive dump in my pants."
