Howdy,

:tab So I was thinking last night about how many cameras I see on the various rides in which I participate. That got me to thinking that it would be cool to see some of the best shots. To that end, I would like you to spend a few minutes going through your pics and find the one that you really really think is one of your best shots. Post it up here for all of us to see. Maybe tell us where it is and what it is about it that you find so appealing. I have a ton of shots so it may take me a bit to find one... Oh, and it does not have to have a bike in the shot, although that would be nice ;-)

Please keep images to 550 pix wide or less. Otherwise, please link to them with the URL tag instead of embedding them with the IMG tag.

:tab I guess I should have restated the forum policy of images not being wider than 550 pixels ;-) It messes up the viewing for those poor souls still running in 800 X 600 resolution. It also makes the download times shorter for the folks on modems.

My favorite shot is this one that Scott took out in Arkansas. For two days I watched the setting sun without anywhere to pull off the road and take a decent picture. Intent on getting at least one of Ally in front of the sky when it was a smiliar color to the bike itself, the last night of the trip I was taking the slow way home from the last gas stop and saw the opportunity. Mine didn't come out great, but Scott came up with this one:

This is my absolute favorite picture. http://www.juddemerson.com/pics/sv_deals.jpg

The history behind the picture is this: Me and four others went from DFW, TX to Knoxville, TN to attend the Honda Hoot in 2001. We rode the entire way. All the other guys were on cruisers except for me. The picture is of the dam just below Deal's Gap. When the group started up towards the Gap I left them behind because the SV is WAY faster than the big pigs that they were riding. Anyway, I get down to the Gap and keep going. I get to the dam, ride past it, then turn around. I end up parking the bike and taking the pic. It felt like an accomplishment. I had ridden a super long distance just to get to Knoxville then I got to ride Deal's Gap. So, the picture almost has a surreal feeling for me. I have since sold the SV but I will always have this memory of my bike I affectionately called 'Stealth'.

This was not on a bike trip, but it's probably my most spectacular photo ever just because of the "right place, right time" factor. It was at Big Bend NP on the River Road. I couldn't believe I actually got the shot, as I usually seem to get the camera ready a second too late for things like this.

This is a quick downloading low resolution copy of a scan. I didn't have a digital camera then, scanned the 35mm shot from my SLR. I have a high resolution print of it hanging on the wall I liked it so much. It was taken on the side of the road south of Alpine Arizona in April. I was following a snow plow down the "coronado trail" on my VX800 at the time, coming back from Laughlin, Nevada.

On Highway 7 south of Estes Park, CO. It's a fave because it's me and my bike on the road, far from home, with my gear strapped tight and nature's glory all around. What's not to love?

Sober Joe and Paca - fellow members of a motorcycling association, but otherwise complete strangers - who heard I'd been injured in an accident, blew off their vacation plans, and traveled 1000 miles out of their way to visit me in the hospital, because "that's what bikers do for each other." How cool is that?

My Dad at a bike show in Hanford, CA, several years before his death. He's standing next to an Indian like one he rode after the war. We were estranged for years, and motorcycling was one of the interests that drew us back together.

Howdy,

Okay, so screw the original requirements, hehe. Here are some select images that I count as some of my best even though they are not the best from a technical photographic point of view. In no special order:

These first two were done one late night on my front porch right after I bought my new Sony CD-500 digital camera back in June of 03. I like them because they are very sharp and the colors look great against the black background, but also because the subject matter is so cool! Start to finish, the process took about 45 minutes for the wings to be literally pumped up to full deployment.

This is Hwy 74 through Southern Missouri and the Mark Twain National Forest. It really sums up the kind of riding you can expect in that area.
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/082403Ark/DSC00478.JPG

This is one of the many switchbacks on Hwy 5 to the top of Mt. Evans in Colorado. The parking lot is the highest paved road in the country at 14260 feet. The VFR stalled when I pulled into the parking spot because the air was so thin. The wind was HOWLING, it was barely 50 F, and there was quite a bit of snow on the ground in places. Walking from the parking lot to the observation building maybe 100 feet away made me feel light headed and see little white spots fleeting around my field of vision  It was quite fun!

This is a Church in Colorado on the Peak to Peak Highway heading South out of Estes Park down the West side of Denver. I love the way the building merges with the rocks almost as if it is part of the ground. That is ice in the water in the bottom left. It was a sunny 80F that day, the first day I owned the R1150GS. Harldy a cloud in the sky and no one on the roads but me :dude:
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/032504Colorado/DSC01475.JPG

This is John "Irondawg" Morin again. He can't help it but he gets in a lot of pictures on trips because he has a nack for stuff like this  Here he is scraping mud from under the fender of Bill "Wasabi" Joye's new VStrom 1000 on our Big Bend Trip in April of 04. The mud was so thick our front tires were locking up and sliding, which of course made us all fall down, hehe.
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/043004BigBend/DSC01654.JPG

Here we are at the Colorado National Monument in June of 04. This is a road that leaves no room for mistakes! We were dodging very nasty weather and trying not to cut the route short. We made it and it was a blast! I like this because you can really see just how steep the road was where I parked the GS. This is a phenomenal road.
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/061204Colorado/DSC02045.JPG

This is on the same trip, and even on the same road. I call it "Beauty and the Beast", you decide which is which ;-) The R1 is Will "Dower" Howard's.
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/061204Colorado/DSC02049.JPG

Imagine 350 miles of this in one day... Mind boggling isn't it? That is Hwy 209 in North Carolina and we literally did this all day long and into the night. We were exhausted. This was our trip to North Carolina in August of 04 with Bob Krogman, Bill Joye, Beth and Myself. Six full days of motorcycling bliss.
http://twtex.com/linkfiles/082104NorthCarolina/DSC02412.JPG

Can you guess what this is...? I love taking weird pics and this is one of my favorites of that type.
http://sfriday.com/HODGES/IMG00344.JPG

Here, Beth and I are set to take off on our very first adventure on the bikes. This is the 98 VFR that later became her blue VFR. Her bike is a 99 Triumph Legend 900 TT. Look at all that luggage  We were heading to North Carolina to explore the Smoky Mountains in August of 2000.
http://sfriday.com/NC2000/IMAGES/NC0002.JPG

It happens to the best of us. We were coming home from Colorado in June 2001, heading through Northwestern New Mexico. This was a 78 mile long construction zone through the 105 F desert. When asked why we wre going so fast and why we were in a hurry, I looked around and said, "You have to ask??" He nailed all of us four double fines even thoug no workers were present, about $150 each  (Actually, we weren't going that fast, 70 in a 55mph  )
http://sfriday.com/WESTRALY01/IMAGES/WEST306.jpg

Okay finally got around to looking through my digital pics from some (I rarely carried a camera off-road) of my rides in Arizona. It’s hard to pick favorite images from them from a quality standpoint, as they were taken with a cheap 1mp digital camera with a fixed lens. So I picked favorites according to where they were taken, and/ or the rides they were taken on. Therefore, there were several, because nearly every ride is a great one.

 BTW, Scott, is there a way to reduce the dimensions of the images without having to change and reload them to my server?

This is one of my favorite secret places:

Unfortunately, no. This version of the forum software does not have the ability to scale the viewed image independent of the size of the original file. I REALLY wish it did as pretty much everyone ignores the request to keep them 550 or less in width. I think the newest version of VBulletin might have this ability and the next release of the phpBB that I use will have it. VB cost money and the next version of phpBB is still under development

I don't post my life on the internet...people who don't know me might think I'm nuts...but...people who do know me think that anyway :-P

SO.....for a brief synopsis of what I've been up to for the last 10 months...

1. Me and a friend built a super tricked-out vintage 1971 Yamaha RD250 race bike. Raced at Barber this year and qualified for Daytona next year!! Come to Daytona and cheer on Amoeba Racing!!
2. got a new job
5. got married Sept 5th in Vegas to a girl I met on my trip around Mexico, Guatemala, Belize
4. bought rental properties in Hermosillo, Mexico
3. knocked her up ;-)
6. did a frame off restoration of a 1971 Yamaha CS3B
7. LOTS of traveling back and forth to Hermosillo
8. Went snorkling in San Carlos, Mex and got tangled up in a Man o' War - almost drowned!!! Those things sting man!!!
9. Moved the missus up to Leander
10. Getting ready for the lil'one due Jan 5

Somewhere along the way I also bought '77 RD400, two '79 GT80s and a Ducati Sport Classic GT but don't get that till 4Q-2005 or 1Q-2006.

See what you can do when you get away from your **** computer!!!

Man, I'm glad a few people posted pics without bikes. The only shots I've got of my bike are in the garage.

These, however aren't too bad. The "colinnosedive" series are a little hairy, and yes, that's me throwing the strap in #4. I tend to run a 1024x768 desktop, so most pics are a little wide.

http://users.ev1.net/~dower/photogallery/Cenotes/CenotesNov200203_2.gif

This was taken on the Yucatan in a cenote called Dos Ojos (Two Eyes) about 15-20 below the surface of the water. What you see looking up is the jungle through a hole in the jungle floor.

My favorite

http://users.ev1.net/~dower/photogallery/Cenotes/CenotesNov200226_2.gif
This was also taken on the Yucatan at Dos Ojos. What you see is a tree lying in the cenote that has fallen through a whole in the jungle floor.

This was one of our favorite dives. You don't know dark until you have been in an underground / underwater cavern with no light. To see a ray of light coming through the jungle floor is humbling.

You don't know dark until you have been in an underground / underwater cavern with no light. While those are awesome photos, I don't do well in dark, tightly enclosed spaces. I doubt that I would ever venture into cave diving. I have a friend that does it and absolutely loves it as long as you exclude the time he had to help pull out the body of a diver who had gotten lost and run out of air. That type of situation would have been pure panic for me.

Wow, I've been a member here since May and I'm just now getting around to seeing these pictures. I thought I'd add a couple of mine.

First is the reason I got a bike in the first place. Which was to ride offroad in southwestern Colorado. This is Poughkeepsie Gulch, a tough detour off the main road from highway 550 to Lake City. I'm pointing the camera slightly uphill so it doesn't look so hard, but between the water running down the road and the really loose rock that starts further up, it was a bear.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/woodbutcher/poughkeepsiegulch.jpg

The next is just to the right of that last shot with my brother-in-laws who got me into riding.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/woodbutcher/poughkeepsiebils.jpg

That trip convinced me that I made the right decsion in learning to ride. I've since learned that I like getting out on the road too. I'm really jealous of you all with the Vstrom and BMW GS's. I have no doubt that something like that is in my future. Probably distant future...my son is a junior in high school and I've got college costs in the near future.

What film? Nice contrast (could just be good optics I guess).

AustinTrophy
11-09-2005, 08:51 AM
Kodak Professional BW400CN film - it's black and white set up for use with standard color processing so you can get it developed anywhere. The downside is that the images come out with a bit of a tint leaning towards sepia. So, before I print anything I have it put on CD so that I can pull it into Photoshop and convert it to true grayscale. For images 2, 4 and 8 I also bumped up the contrast inside of Photoshop (my tool in lieu of being able to control the enlarger and processing time).

Gravy,

Your shots speak to me so I thought I'd offer so constructive criticisms if you don't mind?

First shot: exposure is a tad off. Not enough detail in foreground to ID bike yet it's not dark enough to be a silhouette or detail in the sky. Classic auto metering.

Second: Looks like BB, I was just there. Awesome vistas. Great shot that demonstrates the openess of the land, lose the cell phone (photoshop).

Third: My favorite of yours but the igloo and table really detract. Again, photoshop to the rescue. I'd even take out the clutch lever tip. The bug pattern is AWESOME.

Four: Good detail shot of a classic. Lots to look at.

Five: a snapshot poorly framed. Not worthy to be with your others.

IMO. :-)

FotoMoto: Thanks for the comments. I appreciate the constructive criticism. I agree on the blue igloo in the 3rd pic. I've gotta work on my photoshop skills to be able to lose distracting stuff like that.

The last pic is indeed just a poor snapshot. I only included it because of all the junk piled on the bike. The brick wall behind the bike would have been a perfect background for a nice composition if I had taken the time to do it. I regret not thinking that pic through more thoroughly.

Thanks again.

His buddy got out of the truck and they didn't catch him for a few weeks.

Gotdurt,

Where is that bridge?

I'll have to go back and consult the map as I was just exploring aimlessly, but I'd say it's about 10-15 miles SE of Georgetown. I was on a county road travelling north.

I think that bridge is the same one that Kurt (txmedic) reported on in the "Tin Top Bridge" thread...

Kurt had photos at the bottom of page 2 - for some reason, I could not see them just now...

Hmm, nope, don't think so. Just south of the bridge there is anothr CR that tees in from the east, looks like it used to bend right into the bridge. Then, about 1/2 mile north of the bridge, there's a T intersection, not 4-way.

OK, cool, sounds like there are at least two bridges to look for near Georgetown then...

Not from a bike trip but a good shot NTL....

On our way back from Disneyworld last week, we decided to take the kids to the ocean and let them play some while the sun was setting. I got real lucky and snapped this pic of Joseph our 2YO.

Very cool. Was the water cold? Where are the waves? ;-)

The water wasn't too cold. Both of the kids ended up getting wet up to their waist by splashing around. The air temp was about 75. This was at Pine Island beach in Florida. It's on the gulf side. As far as the waves.....

The granddaughter photo is no longer available.

I removed it after leaving it up for a while. Grandma's photo will also be removed. I just think its best.

But, as you probably guessed, I am proud of my girls (and my boys too). We have 3 kids, 11 grandchildren and 1 greatgrandchild...

I've got plenty of family.........now, I need more motorcycles.

BTW, that's a nice BMW store on I45 North.....I visited there Saturday....nice folks that are happy to help...

I like the way it is silhouetted with the sun going down.

Just came across a few photos I took while out riding the day after Christmas -
__________________

This is St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill, Washington County -

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5949/chappellhill0rs.th.jpg (http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chappellhill0rs.jpg)
(click on thumbnail for full-size image)

The sky that day was a near-perfect blue that you sometimes see late on a clear winter afternoon, and the contrast with the stucco exterior of the church inspired me to try for a more artsy effect -

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/5062/chappellhill21gp.th.jpg (http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chappellhill21gp.jpg)
(click on thumbnail for full-size image)

Unfortunately, there was a utility pole casting a shadow directly across the front door of the church, but I decided to make use of it as it passed over the figure of Christ above the doorway. I had to wait 10 minutes or so for the shadow to move to just the right spot to create (what I think) is a somewhat interesting effect that, appropriately enough, left Christ being in full light -

(click on thumbnail for full-size image)

Finally, another obligatory shot of the Speed Triple on FM 390 just west of Gay Hill, also in Washington County. Had a conflict between the position of the sun and the best view down the road, so the exposure isn't the greatest -

Alright, here is a picture from a ride a couple of years ago.

http://i2.tinypic.com/qsmbs1.jpg

The picture was taken somewhere in Utah between Fruita, Co and Moab, Ut. The trail we were riding follows the canyon wall on the strata we are standing on. You can barely make out the trail in the background. Very interesting ride. I'm glad to say I have done it once. Not sure I would do it again. Very nerve racking riding on a cliff.

Later,
John

Very good. It is the Century Plant, otherwise known as an agave. It rarely flowers and when it does it dies soon after. This photo was taken looking up with the sun behind it. The top of this plant was at about 13-15 feet.
