where can I find a sweeper like the one in the photo at the head of the Two Wheeled Texans page? I have been riding out in the hill coutry in between Austin and Johnson City/Dripping Spring/Willow City and would like to find some twisty, engaging roads with good pavement.

I have found fun on Ranch Roads, but the photo above looks like a sweeper from back home in Western North Carolina (minus the large shoulder, which seems to be a Texas phenomenon).

Anyone want to go riding on Sundays/Mondays?

Howdy,

That shot is out in East Texas, North of Jasper. There are a lot of great roads out there with about as much traffic as you see in the picture

Howdy,

That is Hwy 87 between Burkeville and Hemphill over by the Louisiana border, North of US 190. All of those little FM's right around Burkeville are a hoot as well!

In May of last year, I spent two full days running all over the area between Sam Rayburn and Toldeo Bend. I knocked out almost 1700 miles in those two days and very seldom hit the same roads twice. It is amazing how much asphalt there is out there. Nonetheless, there is very little traffic of any kind. You do need to watch for gravel on the edge of some roads. Often times a drive will come out onto the pavement right in a corner. Stick to 6 or 7 tenths riding level and you'll have a great time.

On the off chance that your Hill Country rides have not taken you beyond Dripping Springs, please be aware that the best roads in the state are just southwest of Kerrville.

State Highway 16, between Kerrville and Medina, offers tight. technical sections as well as some nice sweepers.

The real thrills are to be found on the trinity of Texas Ranch Roads: 335, 336, and 337. Try them and you'll know. Be sure to buy gas at every opportunity when you're out there.

Yup, 337 rocks, though being a slow newbie, I actually wind up doing 15 in a 20 in some spots on that road...

I still get a HUGE kick out of 1431 between Marble Falls and Cedar Park. 55 mph rollercoaster, very nice on a weekend morning before Everyone is out...

Totally agree, except for the gas thing. My VFR's will do 200 miles easy between fillups :) But I stop anyway just to stretch and take in the scenery. The middle section of 336 and the Northern half of 335 are my favorite though. That part of 335 is like a roller coaster. Great stuff.

Boy I have to agree with the 336, 337 ride. Best in Texas. But if you are looking for something a litttle closer you also might try out Park Road 4 just north of Marble Falls. Nice short little run (about 10-15 miles) that ends up on TX 29 west of Burnet. This road rocks, :dude: , and is a fun detour on the way out to Llano for a little Coopers BBQ.

Hey now, theres an idea, how bout a "Two Wheeled Texans" meet up at Coopers some time? Might be kind of hard for those Easterners and Sotherners but if any one is up in this area might be kinda fun. :D

Howdy, SV!

I could do that. Matter of fact, I ride out to Inks Lake State Park on a semi-regular basis, and I'm always up for some good BBQ. Let me know!

:bigokay:

Is it just me, or do others find 29 just east of PR 4 to be a bit of tree-lined sweeper heaven???

You got that right. Wouldn't it be great to have that stretch of road all to yourself? It takes a lot of self-discipline to keep from letting your speed creep up through there!

:dude: Dude, I am so there! I love riding out to the Llano area, and any excuse to get out to Coopers is a good excuse.

:D Alright Then lets do it. How does Saturday 3/12 sound to everyone for a Cooper's Run :chug:

If we can get a few here, I will start a new post on the Rides forum to see if we can get a few more.

Hey Paul, does this work out with you for our switch ride?

Count me in! Next Saturday is 3/15, though, not 3/12.

Man, I hate to decline an invite so fast, but I'm already committed to an East Texas ride that Tourmeister Scott is organizing for that Saturday.

Poopy! :| Guess I'll have to take a rain check.

Actually, that might work out fine. I have a couple of classes on Saturday, but I think one is bagged due to spring break, and I can skip the other, unless we meet late in the afternoon....I'll get back to you...

Now, to figure out where TF Cooper's is.... :help:

Hwy 29 in Llano. Can't miss it. Just follow the smoke and trail of drool to the parking lot.
