Temple PD Officer David Camden was killed today while providing a motorcycle escort. He was off-duty working for a private company. This occurred in the 700 blk of N. 8th street around 12:20 PM. As Officer Camden was transitioning from one intersection to another, one of the vehicles in the procession made a left turn attempting to get onto another street. The vehicle pulled out into his path. He struck this vehicle on the driver’s side. The impact caused him to be thrown from the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet. He was transported from the scene by ambulance, and was pronounced deceased not long after arriving at S&W. There were no other injuries from this crash. The TPD Accident Reconstuction Team is investigating this event. No criminal charges are anticipated against the driver of the car.

David Camden was born in 1968 in Frankfurt, Germany. He served in the Texas National Guard from 1989 to 1993. David was a reserve officer for Belton PD from 1991 to 1994. He joined the Temple PD in September 1996 as a jailer. In October of 1997 David was commissioned as a police officer. During his tenure Officer Camden served on Night Watch patrol from October 1998 to April 2000. David worked in the COPS Unit from April 2000 to October 2002. He went back to Night’s from October 2002 to October 2003. In October of 2003 he went back to the COPS Unit again where he remained until June of 2007. David was currently assigned the Blue Day Watch.

Officer Camden received many awards and commendations while serving with us. There were a total of 28 awards and commendations. These include: Unit Citation in 2000, Commendation Letter in 2001, a Life Saving Award in 2002 and 2003, Mayor’s Award in 2001, nominated for Officer of the Quarter in 2005 and 2006, and nominated for Officer of the Year in 2006.

The life saving award in 2003 resulted from his very heroic actions that captured national attention. In the early morning hours of August 29th Officer Camden responded to a fire at the Glenn Apartments. His in-car camera caught his actions on tape. He and two other officers risked their lives by running up to the apartment which was on fire and rescuing three children and their mother. The officers stood at the base of the burning building and caught the children as they were tossed down to them from the second story. They then caught the mother as she jumped out of the window just moments before the flames were seen coming through the window. David and the other officers were later interviewed on national television.

Officer David Camden is survived by his two sons, Christopher, 16, and Coleton, 8, his parents John and Ursula Camden of Killeen, his two brothers, John and Tommy, and a sister, Mary.

We are going to miss David a great deal. Our prayers go out to his immediate family. We are also praying for his family here at the Temple Police Department and the driver of the other car with their family also.
