Anyone have any recommendations for dualsport and/or off-road rides/roads in that area?

My suggestion would be to check out some of the hiking maps of the area, which should also show some forest roads. The Appalachian Trail goes right near there, so there ought to be some good ones. Wish I could help more, but that's a bit far from my old stomping grounds.

Hey Jill. I thought I would check for roads on Google Earth, but was hoping I can find roads that someone already 'stuck their wheels in', so to speak. Like sticking your toes in to test the waters.

TS - try shooting a PM to Gocatgo - I believe she has done considerable riding in TN.

The best motorcycling in that area is found on the gravel back paths.

Great riding out there!!
There are some fun roads that run up and down the ridges along the Cherohala Skyway and also closer to Robbinsville, NC. The tail of the dragon site is good. Part of the trouble we ran into is that roads have multiple names, not all maps show all names, not all the names will be on the sign, etc,... Of course, that just adds to the fun of exploring ;-) PM me your email address and I will shoot you my GPS tracks from the area (mostly on the NC side though). You have a GPS right? :-P

PM me your email address and I will shoot you my GPS tracks from the area (mostly on the NC side though). You have a GPS right? :-PThat is on the list for next year. Until then, I rely on Hillbilly GPS (Google maps) ;-) However, I think I can plug in GPS coordinates in Google Earth and find the locations. Then I can print maps.
The friend from Michigan may be riding his GS down. He's relatively new to serious dirt. I might have to introduce him to the 'Dirt Side'.
"Beware of the dirt side. Rocks, holes, sand; the dirt side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a ride. If once you start down the dirt path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did many of us." -Knobbi-wan Kawasaki
I'll pm you with addy.
Thanks!

Well, I think I found what I'm looking for.......
Gettin' Dirty in Tellico Plains (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248869)
Python is emailing me info on the trails/route, but I'll have to transfer the GPS points to a 'real' map somehow ;)
I also want to ride the Cherohala Skyway. It looks wonderful! (I'd much rather ride that than the Dragon).
This trip is when I wish I had a helmet cam :flip:

Both are great rides, but 100% different types of riding. The Skyway has some beautiful vistas, and nice, fast, rolling turns. The Dragon is quite a bit tighter and more technical. I preferred the Dragon just because I was less likely to kill myself since I was going a lot slower. Some of the turns on the Skyway were 100+ mph sweepers.... fun times!
You doing this trip this year Elzi? It's just about the perfect time to go right now.

I won't be going very fast riding the Skyway on the Sherpa

Well heck, why are you mad at me for going to Colorado?!?!?!?! You're going to be in TN at the same time.LOL We'll both be having an awesome time!!!!
Pack the warm gear, when I was up there wore nothing but my winter gear. Liners in for the mornings and liners out for the afternoon's. But it still got chilly.

Well heck, why are you mad at me for going to Colorado?!?!?!?! You're going to be in TN at the same time.LOL We'll both be having an awesome time!!!! This was a last minute thing (as of Sunday). Tom posted that he'll be there during those dates, riding down from Michigan and pm'd me suggesting joining up. He knew I had to cancel my Moab trip and am chomping at the bit for a bike trip. And he knows the Hunt's Lodge owners. The roof is mended until next spring (need to replace the entire roofing), so I can actually go on a trip afterall
But not on the Whee. He needs lots of work :( So Sherpie and I are going to have some fun!
I'll email Lori at the lodge and get recommendations for gear. Since we'll have the truck, extra or in-case-of-inclement-weather gear can be stored for access if needed. And I'll take both sleeping bags. Not sure about riding gear on the trail. I'll have to think about that issue.
Colorado and NM were my hopes for this year, but I just can't swing that now. This is my compromise.

I'm off to TP in TN this weekend. Have a route SE and east of TP and in the mountains, recommended by a rider on ADV.
I'll let y'all know how it is.
