I can not get Map Source to recongize my Zumo 450. I am trying to download a route from map source to my Zumo but it does not list it as a device.

Am I doing something wrong or does the Zumo need a special SD card? I was using a 2MB card. Do I need to drop down to a 512kb?

Any help would be great.

TIA

The SD card has nothing to do with MapSource not recognizing the Zumo. Usually the Zumo and the SD card are recognized as separate drives...so if there were issues with the SD card, the Zumo would have been recognized, but not the card. Usually the routes are stored in the device's memory anyways. I'm not sure why is not working though. You might want to ask here: www.zumoforums.com

First question is does your computer recognize the Zumo? Did it say new device found when you plugged it in the first time? Does it show up as a selectable drive in Windows Explorer? Or two drives if you have an SD card installed in the Zumo? Have you updated the Zumo with the latest software update from Garmin? Same question for Mapsource?

As far as the 2Gb card goes it should be fine, I'm running a 4Gb SDHC in mine.

Regarding the SD size, that would depend on which firmware he has on his Zumo. I had to load the latest firmware for my 550 to recognize SDHC's, but like you said 2GB should not be an issue. But then again that shouldn't have any bearing on his PC or mapsource not recognizing the Zumo itself.

I think I had to do the "Add Hardware" wizard IIRC.

My Zumo 450 should be arriving any day now. I need to know all about downloading maps to the Zumo as well. What is SDHC's. Is that the little SD memory card like what goes in my Cannon camera?

Has anyone down loaded maps from MS Streets & Trips to Garmin units? You can PM the answer so I don't want to hijack this thread.
Thanks

you might find your answer on

They've helped me out on a couple of issues. It may even be in the FAQs.

SD Cards are just like you find in many cameras. Routes are downloaded directly from Mapsource although it doesn't use the old .gdb file format.

SD memory is the card you use in your Canon. They can have capacities up to 2Gb. The new generation is SDHD (High Capacity) and has a higher capacity. I'm running a 4Gb SDHC card. You can use SD cards in SDHC compatible devices, but not vice versa. Apparently the Zumo's were not not originally SDHC compliant, but have been made so with a firmware update.

To answer some of the questions. My laptop recognize the Zumo and the SD in Window Explorer. I don't know for sure but I believe it is the lastest update from Garmin. As for Mapsource, it is NT v8 Data Version 8.00. I will check on this.

Have you registered the Zumo online with Garmin?

Three different numbers you want to check.

Data Version should be City Navigator North America NT v8 (version 8.00)
The Mapsource program is 6.13.2 in the latest version.
Zumo firmware should be 3.30

Jerry,

the Zumos have preloaded maps for north america. you only need to download the routes and waypoints to it. You have to create the routes/waypoints/viapoints with MapSource. There is no direct compatibiliy between MapSource and MS S&T. However I've seen people mentioning a couple of programs out there that will convert MS S&T to garmin files.

Thanks Anna. This helps.

As y'all can tell I'm green as grass when it comes to the Garmin jargon. I guess this means I will need to buy yet another piece of SW, Map Source, in order to create routes on my PC or Laptop to be downloaded to the Zumo.

I am really interested in loading the route files others post on this forum to my Zumo. Can I do this without Map Source?

Can I create routes directly on the Zumo and save them for later? How many routes can be saved on the Zumo? I know megabytes will probably be a determining factor.
Thanks

Mapsource comes bundled with the GPS receiver.
Yes, you can load the route files without map source, you just have to know in which folder to save the file to. You can also create the routes on the Zumo, but it's a bit more cumbersome than doing so on the computer. There's room for a ton of routes, as long as you store eveything else (i.e. MP3's) on a SD card.

Glad to hear that you got your GPS talking to your program.
