I'm planning on purchasing a Utopia Backrest for a Goldwing. Does anybody know anyone in the Houston area that has experience in installing these? I am told that self installation involves cutting the seat and I'm just not planning on doing that myself.

So the exterior mount back rest is not an option?

Utopia the by far the most comfortable and popular amongst Wingers. Cutting the seat is nerve racking but easy. Here's a tutorial link from Steve Saunders for you.

No Dave, I have done my research and I'm going with a Utopia.

Terry, I've read of other people's installations and I've watched the video. Still can't get up the courage to carve my seat. Maybe if my bike was older or I was braver. Hence the request for an installer with experience.

Thanks for the comments from both of you guys.

I did it on my then brand new 99' GL1500. It's just follow the directions, read 3 times, measure 4 times and cut once with an exacto knife.

It's just a seat cover, not surgery.

Did it to my 02, no-big-thang. I used a fillet knife to cut the foam. I also purchased the quick release as an option. If you feel uncomfortable with doing the job yourself, take to an upholstery shop, they might can do it for you for a small fee. And I feel your choice is spot on, you're gonna love it.

Bill,
I did it when my '06 was only a few months old, it really isn't rocket science. Mine even had heated seat harness to contend with. If you want, I'll let you take a look at mine if that helps any. But if you really don't want to then perhaps taking it to an upholstery shop might be a good suggestion.

Thanks Terry. I just might want to take a look at yours. I haven't ordered the backrest at this point. Still weighing my options on the installation. The quick release pin looks like a useful option that I would want to have.

Just let me know and I'll P.M. you my cell number. I just live over off of Robinson road in Imperial Oaks. And yes I need to get that quick release pin myself.
