When: :tab November 1st -4th, 2007
:tab This is the last weekend before the time change (Nov 4th). It is likely to be cool in the mornings and evenings. The trees may be a bit past their peak colors but that is fine. Most of the hotels/resorts close down at the end of October. This makes for perfect riding because all the tourists have gone home and we'll see MUCH less traffic on the roads!
Where: :tab Mountain Home, Ar.
:tab Mountain home is ideally situated to hit some of the best roads of South Central Missouri and North Central Arkansas. Roads of particular note or this trip will include Mo/Ar 125 with the ferry ride and Push Mountain Road (Hwy 341) which is often referred to as the Arkansas Deal's Gap. The other roads are just as good, just less well known :trust:
:tab Mountain Home will be approximately another 100 miles further from DFW than Eureka Springs. If you just want to "get there," there are several options. You can run out I-30 to Little Rock, then up US 65 to AR 14, US 62, then East into town. You can also run up Hwy 75/69 into Oklahoma to I-40, cut East to I-540, run up to Fayetteville, then East on US 412 to US 62 and head East into town. If you are looking for a fun route, you can alway do the Talimena Scenic Byway to Mena, then scoot East over to Hwy 27 via US 71 and Hwy 28, then run 27 up to Marshall, 14 North to US 62, and then East on 62 into town. Awesome ride that is!! :rider:
Lodging: :tab Best Western Carriage Inn
:tab 963 Highway 62 East
:tab Mountain Home, AR, 72653
:tab (877) 425-6001 or (870) 425-6001
Ask for Kha, and let her know you are with the Two Wheeled Texans!!
:tab I have a block of 10 rooms set aside for us. You can get Kings or two Doubles. Smoking or Non-smoking.
:tab Rooms are $65.00/night + 10% tax
:tab If we book at least ten rooms, the rate drops to $52.00/night + 10% tax.
:tab There are several good places to eat, all within close walking distance. There is also plenty of room to park trailers for all the less than "real" riders among us :-P
The Daily Plan:
:tab I will likely be trailering from Hunstville and should be in Mountain Home by early evening (5:00pm or so). For anyone in this area that is interested in going up with me, the truck will hold four large adults with room to spare and the trailer can easily hold four large street bikes. Space is on a first come, first served basis. If you bail at the last minute, we will expect you to pay your portion of the diesel if we cannot find someone to take your place. For anyone else that arrives in time for dinner, we'll probably be doing a group dinner Thursday around 7:00pm.
:tab 8:30am Each morning (Friday and Saturday) there will be a pre-ride meeting in the parking lot of the Best Western. Please be gassed and ready to go BEFORE this meeting as we will be leaving immediately following its conclusion. This is when route sheets/maps will be handed out.
:tab This is NOT a guided tour. As such, if there are very many bikes, we will have to split up into groups. Trying to have 20-30 bikes in one group with me leading just does not work well. If anyone wants to volunteer to lead a group, please let me know.
:tab We will eat lunch wherever the mood hits us. Most likely, it will be between noon and 2:00pm depending on our pace and where we are at what time. So if you start having seizures at noon if you don't eat, bring a snickers or something to get you through it ;-)
:tab The routes will be around 300-350 miles each day. It will be a FULL day of riding on fairly technical roads. If all goes well, we should be back in Mountain Home each evening right around sunset (6:45pm-ish). That leaves time to freshen up and grab dinner. After that, most folks usually hang out outside the rooms or in the parking lot visiting. If you are not up for a 300-350 mile day, the routes have multiple places where they can be cut short and I will be glad to make recommendations as we go along for anyone wanting to change their plans.
:tab Anyone that rides up with me will need to help load their bikes Saturday night so that we can leave early Sunday morning for the ride back.
Rally Fee: "I have to PAY!?"
:tab Yes: One day - $20/bike Two days - $30/bike (no fee for passengers)
:tab Yes, I know you can do a trip all on your own. Before you ask, "Why should I pay you!?", let me explain. If any of you have ever taken the time to put together an event, you know it takes a good bit of time and effort. You have to answer all the SAME questions over and over, even though the answers are already right here on the page... You have to answer those deep meaning of life questions like, "Should I bring my rain gear? Will it be cold? Does my tire look like it will make it the rest of the way? Should I get gas when everyone else is getting gas? Exactly how much further is it from here to the next no name town...?" You get the point ;-)
:tab What do you get for the fee? Here is the deal. My rallies focus on two things, the riding and the people. If you want big parties, entertainment, door prizes, etc,... try another place ;-) My events are about knocking out great riding on awesome roads followed by casual dinner and then the parking lot tire kicking sessions until you feel like going to bed. I will provide routes with descriptions, recommended stops, and even lead a group of riders. There is a pre-ride meeting in the parking lot of the hotel each morning before the ride. Lastly, you get the satisfaction of knowing that the meager profit from this rally will go towards funding TWT :trust:
How to Register:
:tab You have to do THREE things.
1. Fill out the registration form (http://twtex.com/linkfiles/110107-TWTAutumnRally/register.pdf) and either mail it to me or bring it with you.
2. Fill out the liability waiver (http://twtex.com/linkfiles/110107-TWTAutumnRally/waiver.pdf) and either mail it to me or bring it with you.
3. Prepay (http://www.twtex.com/forums/payments.php) (top two options) or pay me in the parking lot (CASH ONLY!).
IF you plan to go but are not prepaying and intend to bring your paperwork with you and pay in person, PLEASE let me know so that we can keep track of attendees!
Scott I wish that I could go. Is this going to be a yearly rally at the same time? I already made plans for that weekend to go to Hot Spring BMW rally. If I can help you to get things done please let me know. I will be there to help out for next years rally.

:tab Ryan, it is never a fixed date from year to year. Too many variables that affect the timing. Also, it is impossible to pick a weekend that does not conflict with numerous other events, particularly during the time from the start of September through about mid November.
:tab Stuart, have fun and be safe ;-)

:lol2: I am going even if I go alone... ;-)
:tab However, that was actually a tour, where you HAD to pay in advance. I've stopped doing those entirely. People refuse to commit even though they want the thing planned to the nth degree just in case they decide to go. They whine about the cost even though they will pay almost exactly the same amount to do a rally. It is FAR more work on my end for less reward. The rally just seems to work best. It allows people to be flakes right up until the last moment :-P
:tab I've added you as an "Unpaid Definite". It that correct?

I just spoke to Shannon at the Best Western, who was very nice. When she finished taking my information, she asked me in kind of a timid voice "can I ask you, what ARE the Two Wheeled Texans, are ya'll a bunch of bikers?" I tried not to laugh, and told her we were a group of responsible, lawabiding mototcyclists. I think I heard a little sigh of relief, then I added "don't worry, we'll pay for any damages." :lol2:
Yes, unpaid definite. I just printed off my forms and will mail them to you with payment.

:tab The owner is familiar with me and the groups I bring there. I have run several tours using their location as a base. They have always been very accommodating. However, I do think they might get a little worked up if we start doing burnouts and other squidliness in the parking lot :wary: they've never had a problem with us just hanging out outside the rooms, around the pool, or in the parking lot visiting. We usually take it into the rooms if we go past 10:00pm just out of courtesy to other customers.
:tab Snoopster, that must have been some other conversation... yeah... that's it... :-P I did ask if Beth wanted to set up the kids to stay with the grandparents and go with me. No definite answer on that yet ;-)

Uh...
Uh...
I thought with rallies, it was like a scavenger hunt type of deal on a motorcycle.... you're given a time limit and a book with a number of bonus locations and things to take a picture of at said location (specific instructions that must be met to get allocated points awarded to you). Pictures all submitted via polaroid (to avoid any digital alteration, duplication, etc).
Apparently not? This is just a get together?

 So... I can't ask an honest question? When I hear "motorycle" and "rally" used together to describe an event, I understand that there should be a time limit specified, and bonus locations, and rules and whatnot.

:tab Of course you can ask an honest question! :-P I just did not realize what it was you were asking in your original post ;-) This is not that kind of rally. This is just getting together, riding, visiting, eating, riding, visiting, and eating some more. There currently are no plans for any kind of treasure hunt, points, etc,...

This is why I asked the "what is a rally?" question in Ryan's thread that kinda got this started - I don't think there is a standard definition.
Our Grrl thinks of "rally" in the context of the bi-annual IBA version...

Just a suggestion.... better plan on returning a wee bit earlier - just finished a romp up there and 6:50 was dark. Three weeks from now it'll be worse.
On the flip side - it's lighter earlier there and we were rolling by 8 every morning. Also, with the warm temps (90's in full gear - ugh) maybe the leaves will still be turning... everything was still green.
Tourmeister
10-08-2007, 10:47 AM
Yeah, I will be watching the time and if necessary, the routes can be shortened on the fly without sacrificing the quality of the riding.
Our Grrl thinks of "rally" in the context of the bi-annual IBA version...
*shrug* that's the only kind of context I have ever heard "motorcycle" and "rally" together - a competitive event. Thus the request for clarification :)

I did a four day trip to Tennessee in August and again two weeks ago; and tomorrow Pat and I are going to Highlands for a week. We're going to try that South Carolina route you gave me a couple of years ago; and some new stuff around Hot Springs (Hwy 63 and some roads off there).
Since Pat is on this trip, she might give me the Ok for your Arkansas rally. I'll start working on her after we get back.:box:

Unless you just want to get there a day early, you are welcome to trailer up with me on Thursday. I'll be leaving from Huntsville 7:00am. If you come up Wednesday evening, we can load the bikes, then just get up and go in the morning.
If you want to ride up, I can recommend some fun roads. It will likely take you the better part of 12 hours to get there if you hit the fun roads on the way.

You guys need to be careful up there on 341, Push Mountain Road. I was up there a few weeks ago and it has A LOT of very recently applied chip seal on it. There has been enough of it put down that it takes the fun out of it on that road IMHO. The scenery is still great and it is still a nice ride but you just cant wick it up a bit as in the past, at least I couldnt anyway. And to top it all off I probably encountered about 12 cars including one local sheriff while on 341. I was shocked. Not that I have been in Arkansas an excessive amount of times but after the times I have been up there and getting used to pretty much not seeing hardly any one at all it was a little startling to encounter that much traffic on that one stretch of road and it was equally dissapointing to not be able to ride it like I wanted to because of the all the chip seal.
txbanditrydr
10-15-2007, 09:26 AM
Being careful on 341 is always good advice.... however being there myself just 10 days ago found the road to be in great shape. With that said, there's a guy now doing photo work (ala KillBoy @ Deal's Gap) and his pics and website are generating a lot more attention to that road. No doubt as that little slice of twisty heaven gets more popular so will the LEO presence.

I do not want Arkansas to get more popular :lol2: Everyone needs to stay focused on Deal's Gap! :-P
Thanks for the heads up about the chipseal. That is always an issue in Arkansas and Missouri. The don't always post warnings for it and they seem to have a knack for putting it in bad places  As for the traffic, October is the busiest month for that area for fall foliage tourists and campers. Hopefully, going in Early November will help with that as it has in the past. Most of the resorts and such close at the end of October.

Ndmiller is coming up Wed evening to get the bikes loaded. Roger is coming back up Thurs morning and then we hit the road at 7:00am. We should be in Mountain Home by 5:00pm-ish.

I assume everyone has a range of at least 150 miles per tank?
Also, is anyone opposed to a few miles (3-4) of hard packed gravel if it is dry? I'd like to take the group to a neat waterfall, but it is a few miles off the main road on a maintained forest road. We can always check the road when we get there and decide then if needed. It does not affect the overall route.

Yeah, the little Fizzer is ready to go if needed, but I would sure miss the wind protection of the Connie on that 500 mile ride up there...!
Theresa - when are you riding up?

Well, I think the longest leg would be around 125 miles. If you bring a rubber hose, you can suck a little gas out of my tank :-P I can go about 250 on a tank.

So if the Connie is a no go, can you take the FZ6?
Roger came up, dropped off his bike so we can load it Wed night, and then he and his son helped me move a few thousand pounds of sacrete off the trailer :eek2:
Ndmiller is coming up Wed evening to get the bikes loaded. Roger is coming back up Thurs morning and then we hit the road at 7:00am. We should be in Mountain Home by 5:00pm-ish.
Got my heated vest wired up on the Weestrom  Still need to get the GPS wired in though. I'll send out the routes to those that want them (GPX format).
Tweaking (adjusting tire pressures for cooler weather) and packing up the bike tomorrow night. I'm planning to exit work around 3pm, home about 4pm, trick or treat with the kiddo for an hour or so, so will be up in your neck between 6:30-7:30.
Gravel road is ok for me as long as it's dry, and it should be with no clouds in the middle of the country for the last week.

I REALLY want to, but am running out of time to take care of responsibilities before we leave on our Thanksgiving trip. (being grown up is such a pain!)
It would be fun to see VFRHugh again.
I guess I won't know till I show up, or not!

Does your route go through McKinney? Or were you planning to go up to Gainesville and over?

The Mapquest route that says shortest time for me takes me through Sherman north into Oklahoma.
I got the battery in the Connie and it runs great. Now if everything else would fall into place. I may have family obligations that will keep me here Thur and Fri. I have off work through Monday and could still do a weekend ride but that would mean no trip to AR. :angryfire
I need to just give up on making plans.....
Like you, John, I'll know when I show up, or not!

Yah... but you can get to Sherman through Gainsville, or cut across 380 thru Mckinney. That would probably be a few minutes longer.
I'm was wondering if I could ride up with you (assuming we both show up). We could meet up in Sherman, or McKinney if you go that way.

Sorry to hear it. I know how you feel, except this weekend coming up is my make-up weekend for missing my big trip to AL. :zen:

You had to miss the Alabama trip?
I hope this weekend's ride turns out to be awesome as a consolation prize!

Scott,
I'm still a "maybe". I'm thinking about riding up into Tennessee Thursday PM and camping; and then maybe heading over to catch you on the southern leg of the Friday ride (or head for the Best Western if you are in MO). The weather looks great:sun: ; and the trees might actually be changing - the dry Summer has really made it late this year. Pat and I were on the Tenn/Ky border Saturday and the leaves had not turned.
Glad to see Hugh is going. I've missed seeing a yellow streak pass me in a corner:eek2: . Hope he's bringing his better half.
I'll keep lurking:trust:

Buzz,
Beth isn’t coming on this trip and I finally realized that if I didn’t go on I’d probably not ride the yellow bike till spring. Other than a track day about a year ago I haven’t ridden the VFR since the September 06 Arkansas ride.
Hope to see you there,
Hugh:rider:

Just got back on Monday from the Ozark Dualsport ride and color is just starting around Clarksville, we found some good color at higher elevations like White Rock and Mount Magazine. It also was a little better when we rode farther north. Mountain Home may be good by the time ya'll get there. Have fun and ride safe.

It was awesome.
Perfect weather. Little to no traffic. Perfect roads. TONS of color in the trees. No tickets or accidents. Great food. Can't wait to do it again :dude:
Trip report and pics to follow when I get the chance. Busy playing catch up now that we are back.
