Uncle's Ride the Rio Non-Event
Feb 21 - 24, 2008
Dual sport and Street Riding in the Big Bend
Big Bend is full of fantastic motorcycling adventures. From one of the best twisty paved roads in Texas (Hwy 170 from Terlingua, TX to Presidio, TX) to the best dual sport road in Texas (Pinto Canyon Road), Big Bend is a motorcycling paradise. It doesn't matter whether you ride a street-only motorcycle, an adventure touring bike, or a true "street legal dirt bike" there are a wealth of riding opportunities for all motorcyclists in the Big Bend area.
Uncle's Ride the Rio Non-Event: Uncle is pleased to sponsor this "non-event" event and invites all motorcyclists to join him the last weekend in February for a long weekend of motorcycling adventure. Ride, trailer, or otherwise get you and your bike out to Big Bend on or around Thursday, Feb 21th. Spend Friday and Saturday exploring the Big Bend. Head home on Sunday.
Is this the same Ride the Rio event that's been put on for the past 12 years or so? Yes and no. The gentleman who has been the primary organizer of the Ride the Rio event since it was started a dozen or more years ago decided to move on to other things. Uncle thought the Ride the Rio was too much fun to let die so he stepped up to continue the tradition, with a few changes - namely making it a non-event event and to encourage increased participation by dual sport/adventure riders.
What is a "non-event" event? It means this ride isn't like other organized rides & rallies. No sign up. No registration fee. No banquets. No set schedule to follow. Just show up, ride, and have a great time. Whether you attend by yourself or bring your friends, there will be others to ride with. Ride when you want, where you want, in the middle of winter and in the middle of nowhere. Team up and head out on an adventure. Got a few extra days off? Then come on out early. Or stay a few days late. Uncle will be around and he's a friendly guy. He can recommend roads to ride, or ride with you, or drink a beer with you, or even toss a few horseshoes with you in the evening (especially if you are buying the beer).
Morning & Evening: Riders are invited to converge each morning at 9 a.m. at Kathy's Kosmic Kowgirl Kafe to meet up, find someone to ride with, and/or select the day's route. Come early if you want breakfast or to enjoy Kathy's campfire. Each evening there will be an informal rider gathering on the front porch of the Starlight Theater to drink a few beers, grab a meal, and share the adventures of the day.
Sleeping: Need a place to sleep? Grab a room at one of the local motels; there are several to choose from.
Uncle suggests the new El Dorado hotel in Terlingua as the "uncle approved" hotel of choice. It is a nice place to stay and is centrally located. Single rooms are $79 per night, doubles are $89 per night. Their phone number is 432-371-2111. Tell 'em Uncle sent you.
There are camp sites at the Study Butte Motor Lodge where you could pitch a tent for a few dollars. Or if room is available you might pitch your tent at Uncle's place. Or whatever.
Dirt or Street? Is this a dual sport event or a street bike event? Yes! It doesn't matter what you ride, there will be places to ride and people to ride with, so come on out. You won't regret it.
There are some awesome paved roads in the Big Bend area that really shouldn't be missed, especially if you are a Texas motorcyclist.
Uncle's got a nice DR350 dual sport bike and will probably be leading a dual sport ride off into the Big Bend boonies, so if you've always wanted to go play in the dirt at Big Bend this is a wonderful opportunity.
What if you don't have a motorcycle? That's okay, come on out anyway. There is lots of cool stuff to do in Big Bend in the middle of the winter and the weather is nice. Besides, we are probably going to need a designated driver or two each evening.
Who's In Charge Here? No one. You are. This is a non-event. No one is in charge and there isn't anyone to complain to if things aren't organized the way you would like them to be. Tell someone where you are riding to, though, so if you don't come back in the evening someone can alert the authorities to go looking for you.
Will it be Fun? Yes! No question about it! We are going to have so much fun, everything else may pale in comparison. If you haven't ridden in Big Bend before you simply don't know what you are missing. If you have, then you already know how much fun it is. In any case, if you miss it, you only have yourself to blame.
T-shirts? Stickers? I'm happy to report that dual sport adventure rider Ken Haley has designed a special commemorative shirt for Uncle's 2008 Ride the Rio. Ken made the shirts for the 2007 TAR and they came out great - highly quality screen printing on a quality t-shirt.
T-shirts are $15, Sweatshirts are $20 for sizes S - XL. Add $1 for each extra X (XXL t-shirt = $16, XXL sweatshirt = $21, etc.).
If you would like a Ride the Rio t-shirts then paypal your order, shirt size, & payment to Ken at kdhaley@hotmail.com.
Ken will deliver the shirts at the event.
Can we ride in Mexico? Not only yes, but we think you should seriously consider it. Actually, there is a really awesome canyon (Peguis Canyon) about 25 miles south of Ojinaga, Mexico that is well worth a visit. You don't need a passport or any paperwork to visit it either; just cross the border and head south, you can't miss it. For you dual sport riders, I've heard there is some good off-road riding in the desert outside Ojinaga. Somebody needs to go explore that area and get back to us with a good ride report.
In short, if you can't have fun on a motorcycle in Big Bend, you can't have fun on a motorycle. So, pack your bags and come on out. You are gonna have a great time. See you there.

Good idea. Thanks, Tourmeister.
Kathy's Kosmic Kowgirl Kafe is located on Hwy 170, about a mile west of the junction of Hwy 170 and Hwy 118.
Uncle can be contacted via phone at 580-364-2616 or email at rogerhazlewood@netscape.net

I had the pleasure to ride the road from Presido to Terlingua in October last year. I cant tell you how much I enjoyed it, I was with two wild men who were really fast and we rode that road really fast from beginning to end. I was all for turning around and doing it again the other direction. We stopped to drink a beer at the place where you can turn out and throw rocks at Mexico. The whole time we were there I was secretly afraid the overhanging huge rocks would decide to let gravity have its way and fall on the three of us. I have had the want to go back again and do it all over again. How cold it it out there in February? The first week in last October was real nice with warm days and cold nights. The first of each days ride was a bit chilly but nothing to stop you if you have the right gear at hand. I just don't know about February, feed back anyone?

Big Bend weather is nothing if not fickle. The Oilman and I did our version of Ice Capades last Easter. 2-3 inches of ice on everything including us. By the next day, suns out temp's rising. We had the park virtually to ourselves. Next day? Stupendous sunrise standing around a great mesquite fire at Kathy's on the way to 65 degrees (maybe it just felt like 65 degrees) and one of the best days you can have on a bike.
Just plan accordingly and you'll be fine.

Chris,
I think the temps will be pleasant during the day and cold at night. It's the last weekend in Feb, so I'm figuring the temps will reach the mid-60s to low 70s during the day and high 30s / low 40s at night.

Sounds good to me. I don't like riding in a strange place at night at any speed to speak of. Last time out there I saw way to many signs of auto deer accidents and I don't want to clobber some other four footed critter while riding at night. So I will be found in a nice warm bed after the sun goes down. 60 to 70 degrees will sit well with me for day time temps. I bought a heated vest a couple of years ago and have never been so glad to have one. I am almost 60 years young and the heat from that vest helps keep my lower back nice and comfortable and pain free. I also found a pair of Joe Rocket textile gloves about 3 years ago that absolutely do not allow moisture or cold in, and are very comfortable to wear. Have worn them into the single digit numbers on the temp gage with no problems. I am going to put my name on the calender at work for those days off so I can go. I really loved the roads down there and the absence of police in my mirrors. I would be interested in finding someone to perhaps share the cost of hotel charges if someone can be found. The hotel charges ate up a good bit of my budget for the ride last year. Last year I make the mistake of taking too much stuff along, this year I would take one change of clothing against the chance of a clothing disaster on the ride other wise would just wear the same stuff the whole time. Just don't ride right behind me if your nose is sensitive. Laughing.

It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope I get a chance to meet with your group sometime. I hope the rain did not dampen your ride too much Saturday. I am going to make this one as well . I always try to make the BB outings . The last one in October (the Burl memorial) was in fact a good combination of racing and trail riding . Fred Hink of arrowhead motorsports in Moab Utah runs his cmc the very same way , using it as a non-event event! Sounds like fun . Roger and Richard should be commended for puting on a fine event like this!! THANKSguys . . . .I'LL see you there . Mike McSpadden :rider:

Thanks for the info on the cabins...I will make reservations today. We have 3 or 4 of us planning on coming from Dallas. Sounds like a great trip. Always wanted to get to Big Bend and this seems like the best reason yet. See ya in February.

Mike,
The Lazy T closed. Then the folks who own The Hills Motel in Junction bought it and have re-opened it. I don't have a phone number for them but will get it.
I was looking up accommodations for Ride to Rio and came across http://www.visitbigbend.com/maps_study.html . I hope this helps with the planning everyone is doing.
I plan to be there Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning in time to ride a bit and stay until Sunday morning. It's about 550 miles and I'll be pressed for travel time, so I'll trailer down since the TW doesn't do well on the highway with headwinds. I'll probably stay in the cheapest campground with a hot shower and sleep in the van. Anyone want to share a campsite to save money?
Study Butte RV Park $18 no showers or restrooms
Big Bend Motor Inn and RV Park $12 with restrooms, pay showers ($2/6 minutes showers)
It seems water is VERY expensive, so more than 2 people/site is additional.

Want to share a campsite? I'll be staying at the Big Bend Inn and RV Park, sleeping in the van. Location is #s 5, 6, and 7 on http://www.visitbigbend.com/maps_study.html . Gas, groceries, and restaurant 6:00AM to 10:00PM so no running around wasting time with necessities. $19/night plus $2/6 minutes of hot shower. I'll split the $19, but you're on your own for the shower.

Thanks for the offer Ken. I need to ask this first, how big are the campsites? I've got my truck and trailer that will be coming, and Graeme will be coming up from Houston as well in a truck/trailer combo. But worst case if there isn't enough room, I can just book a second site near by.
I can't answer your questions. Many private campgrounds only allow one tow vehicle per site. That means everyone who tows will have to have a separate site, unless one rig can be parked at Uncle's or something. Call Big Bend RV Park and ask. For reservations 1-800-848-2363. For information 1-432-371-2218.
Ara, thanks for the advice about hauling in groceries and fuel. I intend to do just that, along with fresh water. Peace and joy.

Plan on making this one for sure. Will be camping at the Big Bend RV Park in
Study Butte with the rv, utility trailer and two bikes. Will look for the guys who are sleeping in the van. Plan on leaving Spicewood Wed am in case any body wants to know. Buddy has a Yam XT225 first bike and is a beginer so will be taking it easy most of the time. Plan on hitting the road behind the ghost town (the one with the little wood red arrows) its a fun road and it works for novices and cant wait to ride the River Road and any other dirt road in the park for that matter. What is even "funnier", "strange" maybe... and then again "normal" since she is now a good neighbor of yours, is that a few weeks ago "you" agreed very strongly that she was the most unpleasant person in the area... I know they live right across from you guys, 25 miles + away from the fun, and I don't blame you for trying to promote her Ranch... but, one has to say it the way it is... as I did and stand on my observation... My reports are always accurate as I am also asked for them to be, the reason why I had brought up the conversation that day, just wanting to make sure I was not on a tangent. 15 months on the road later and meeting many people, she has truly been an exception...
But, anyhow, this is not what this thread is all about... sorry for the deviation.
You all have a great time... as you will.

Some people don't know their being rude. I know this because I've met plenty of them. They just think that they are as normal as can be, meanwhile, no one cares to be around them. I'm not saying that this is the case for sure, but I've seen it on more than one occasion. Just a thought.

I'm not saying that this is the case for sure, but I've seen it on more than one occasion. Just a thought. I agree. What may be direct and forthcoming behaviour is often interpreted as rude by others. I can see how that may be more common than not down there because the harsh environment tends to breed a harsh character. That does not mean the intention is rude. That's just the way people are in such places.
Social environments usually match the land environment, especially in places that are unforgiving. No time to kittyfoot, beat around the bush and placate people with niceties, but they can also give you the shirt off their back and open their doors and hearths to others.
I'm considering this one.
The more I see the pictures, the more I realize that I have to get out to Big Bend. I'm a "stronger" maybe.

Anyone wanting to dry camp, I have 2 locations close to my place. One is Garth Park across the hwy. from the ghostown. The other is property you have to cross to get to my place. Both have flat areas for tents or trailers. Garth Park has fire rings and an outhouse. If interested get in touch.
Roger,
If there is space left in the property near yours, I would like to stay a few days. I am bringing the XR and am hoping to ride some of the stuff we didn't have time for in October during the Burl Hughes Memorial Dual-Sport (e.g. Black Gap, Old Ore, River Road).

Well, looks like I'm going to be able to make this one. I know chopperbob is heading out from south austin and might be able to take me and one bike, but I'm wondering if anybody is heading out from north austin and wants to split gas costs with me? I'd like to take both my WR250F and Transalp. I have a trailer that can carry 3 bikes.
Also, Roger have you been keeping track of how many people would like to stay at your place or the lots near you? I'd be interested in camping if chopperbob doesn't have space for me. Thanks

Warning for anyone tent camping down there: free-standing tent or not, you'll need really strong and narrow stakes to anchor your tent down in the winds. I also suggest using guylines.
Much of the desert floor is hard limestone shale. Hard. Real hard. And the wind can whip a weakly secured tent up into the air or collapse it. I've been there (aka in one that threatened to fly off several times; anchored it with rocks) and seen at least one collapsed big tent in the park.
I'm ordering 10" tent nails (supposedly they can go through almost anything with help from a mallet) and reflective guyline. Also taking a tarp for underneath the tent and a moving blanket to put on the inside floor of the tent (helps it stay warm and cushions the rocks from underneath).
Otherwise, enjoy the coyotes and sunrises/sunsets. :sun:

REI, sells extra heavy duty tent stakes that I've been using for quite some time now. They are just like tent stakes but made of 1/4" round bar. They still have the bend at the top so you can anchor whatever you need to, and they also give you a great place to pull them out of the ground with. These things will NOT bend and will go through anything I can think of.
Oh yeah and they were cheap too.

Does anyone know what you now need to cross the border and for re-entry into the USA?
Richard_
02-03-2008, 07:39 AM
Here's what MexAdventure insurance sent me recently:
On January 31, 2008 - US Border Officials will ask for Passports or Birth Certificates.
Although passports will not be required until June 2009 (or later) for land travel across the US border, US border officials will begin asking for proof of citizenship on January 31, 2008. Proof of US citizenship can be provided with either a Passport or with a Birth Certificate. Original Birth Certificates are preferred, but a photo copy will also be accepted for the time being. All people 19 years or older who do not have a passport will be required to show a photo ID such as a US Drivers license. Minors 18 or younger will not need a photo ID, but will need a Birth Certificate or Passport.
US citizens who do not have a Passport or Birth Certificate will not be refused from crossing back into the US, but border officials will write up a warning to alert travelers to bring their Birth Certificate or Passport next time they cross the border.
The new Birth Certificate requirement is part of the transition period leading up to June 2009 when passports will start to be required. US Border Officials will be lenient in the first few months. They do not wish to increase border wait times, so they will only be giving verbal and written warnings to travelers for the first few months.

You can easily do it in one day. Downhill from Marfa is the easiest. As soon as you get on the dirt you will have a couple miles of larger rocks, but nothing dramatic and the road is wide...
I did it easily, taken a lot of pictures and stopping in Alpine for the Bakery and Marfa for the Pizza Connection...

Cobbler and ice cream? Well, now that you mention it, let's talk about that. Suppose one was to take a little ride in the park and end up at Rio Grande Village about lunch time. I've been told that food services are pretty sorry there. Now, suppose one's friend happened to have the coals on a hot Dutch oven in one of the grills at the Daniel's Ranch Picnic Area, a little Blue Bonnet under dry ice in a cooler, maybe sizzle some sausage on a stick ... . Sound good? Soozy wants to visit Big Bend and will cage a picnic in one day for whomever wants to eat. Any takers?

It's the entire area of GREAT riding to the west of Austin. Most of Texas is falt or almost flat, so the section in the middle with hills and valleys gets dubbed "The Hill Country".
I've got Garmin routes from a previus trip, but others will chime in here with road numbers and turn-by-turn info off the top of their heads. PM me your email addr if you want the .gpx stuff.

Hill Country (http://www.hill-country-visitor.com/) is, well, in the hills. ;-) Begins ~60 miles south of the DFW area, just west of Austin and east of.......... someone else can fill that in. It extends about a few hundred miles north of Big Bend region. For reference, Terlingua is about 510 miles from Fort Worth (by way of I-20 and south on FM roads).
Follow the link above for a resource on Hill Country. Several state parks are in that area, too.
Warning: if you go through Hill Country, do so before dusk and after twilight. The deer there are killers and they outnumber humans. (we need more coyotes)
See ya there.

.. Warning: if you go through Hill Country, do so before dusk and after twilight. The deer there are killers and they outnumber humans. (we need more coyotes) ... .
Back in the olden days when I did real science I was part of an investigation into coyote eating habits. After analyzing the stomach contents of 300+ coyotes from across Tennessee, only three contained remains of deer. Coyotes cannot catch a healthy deer, and even if they could, coyotes are solo hunters and a single coyote doesn't have a chance against a healthy deer, except maybe a day-old fawn. Deer make good use of their sharp hooves--deer have killed coyotes by crushing their skulls with a single kick. Now, if a deer is too sick to run or defend itself, or already dead, well, coyotes are opportunistic feeders that readily scavenge. We found commercial pet foods in probably 20% of the coyotes we studied.
On the other hand, coyotes usually prey on ground-dwelling small mammals (generally rodents and lagomorphs) and ground-nesting birds (quail, pheasants, turkeys, waterfowl, roadrunners). Reptiles and amphibians make up a very small portion of coyote nutrition.
Natural predatory control of the deer populations was mostly by mountain lion, which is pretty much an extinct species in the Hill Country because the big cats have been eradicated as a threat to livestock. Several sub-species of gray wolf would have also hunted deer, but all native to Texas are extinct except a small population of the Mexican Grey Wolf (canis lupus baileyi) that is probably extinct in the wild, with a small captive population used for breeding purposes.

As with most medium-sized predators, coyotes can and sometimes do prey on young, injured or old deer. A study of coyotes in Texas (stomach and feces content) demonstrated their primary food sources: rabbits, 33%; carrion, 25; rodents, 18; domestic livestock (chiefly sheep and goats), 13.5; deer, 3.5; birds, 3; insects, 1; other animal matter (skunks, weasels, shrews, moles, snakes, and lizards), 1; vegetable matter, 2.
Coyotes are opportunists and their habits are more varied than their other canine cousins; they are loners as well as small pack canines (unlike the wolf which has a structured social pack system). They usually hunt alone, but will also hunt in groups, usually to bring down larger prey. Habitat and resources dictate what they eat.
Deer loss to coyotes varies local to local. In the NE (New England), deer can be a large component of their diet in lean times such as winters when other food is scarce.
Regardless, coyotes are the most adaptable of all the wild canine species. Hence they are an important component of deer population control because the other larger mammals -wolf, cougar, jaguar- are now extinct due to human depredation and encroachment of humans into their habitats.
Coyotes adapt more than any other wild canine, perhaps even any other medium to large wild mammal. Ecosystem balance can't be restored unless other large mammals that prey on deer are reintroduced. And protected.

"Regardless, coyotes are the most adaptable of all the wild canine species."
Yep, here at Canyon Lake they are regular guest for dry cat food server under my barn. I keep the area lighted where I put out dry cat food for the coyotes, fox, coons, skunks, opossums, and 10 cats. Since 1979 there have been either fox or coyotes in a den just behind my barn. I say fox or coyotes because I really don't know which if either use a den, but the den is always used by something so I assumed it to the fox or the coyote. I know the coon and opossum go high and the skunk burrows.
My thoughts on the over population of deer is that there should be no closed season or any limitation on how they can killed.

Coyotes adapt more than any other wild canine, perhaps even any other medium to large wild mammal. Ecosystem balance can't be restored unless other large mammals that prey on deer are reintroduced. And protected.
Our conclusion was that coyotes do not have much of an effect on deer populations because they only kill deer that are close to death, same with bears and bobcats. I can see where coyotes would have a speed advantage over deer in snow deep enough the deer can not run. Also, late winter is a difficult time for deer because food sources are buried under thick snows. Even the healthiest deer struggle to find food, shelter, and drinkable water. A significant predation rate for New England winters is easy to accept.
On the other hand, wolves can not keep up with a healthy dear for more than a few dozen yards, so wolves take turns chasing, alternating a hot pursuit with a relaxing lope to force deer to run hard until exhaustion sets in. The loping wolves cut corners to keep up with the faster-running deer. I've seen wolves hunt and take an elk, from first scent to kill. The teamwork is amazing.
On the other hand, the big cats are better stalkers than wolves and have the quickness and speed to catch a healthy deer if the deer has a short head start. Cats also ambush, patiently waiting along a deer trail until dinner strolls by.

I plan on riding down but if there is someone in the Houston area who wants to to go but dose not want to ride let me know. I can fit 2 bikes in my small truck and would be OK doing this to help someone out. I just can't see taking my truck down there with one bike in it.
I managed to scrounge a ride with Carl and Gary, but thank you for thinking of me. ;-)
(and Carl said I can even sleep in the truck! )
Yep, in the back of the truck.

I believe Uncle (roger) has some space at his place for dry camping and access to another lot. I think it is listed in one of the early posts in this tread. Also, the Big Bend Motor Inn and RV campground has tent spots. I believe they charge extra for a shower though. This link has some information about places in Study Butte and Terlingua. http://www.visitbigbend.com/maps_study.html

I am looking forward to this. I went for a short 50ish mile ride to test the gear this morning... in 29 degree weather. 29 degrees and 85-90mph down the highway didn't feel too bad. Long underwear bottoms, heavy weight fleece bottoms, wind/rain proof liner, riding pants, long sleeve tshirt, aerostitch heated vest, heavy weight fleece shirt, wind/water proof liner, FirstGear Rainier jacket, insulated gloves, heated grips, heavy weight balacava.
I'm glad you Texans don't mind a Missourian coming to your non-event.

Hola Aventueros!
My motorcycle needs to go to Peguis Canyon. http://ojinaga.com/Peguis/peguis.html
A great ride would be up to Candelaria on the river road, back to Ruidosa and do the dirt part of Palo Pinto Canyon Road. On the return we could cross the border at Ojinaga and make the 25 mile jaunt to Peguis.
Total mileage looks to be about 325
Bring a birth certificate/passport to facilitate the border crossing. Since we will be staying within the 25 mile border zone no additional preparation would be necessary.
Lets organize a posse on Thursday night at the Starlight Theater to Git-er-done!

Mapsource tells me that from Presidio to the end of Pinto Canyon Road and back is 113 miles. If you can get 115 miles from a tank I think you can run Jerry's route if you don't run all the way over to Candelaria.
This will be my first trip on my new XChallenge and until I figure out how far I can go on a tank of gas this is going to be my insurance. The 2-1/2 gallon tank is going to be a huge adjustment from the 8-gallons I'm used to.

I'd love to meet you Voni. Mel Smith of Adrian MO has spoken highly of you and your riding history. Mel is a 79 year old client of mine that rides a burgman, but has riden different bikes all over the country during his life. At 78 he took me on a 480 mile Saturday ride into Kansas that took 12 hours and we must have visited 20+ other bikers. That guy knows every rider within 100 miles I think. The one I remember was Prothey that has a 300,000 BMW cert.

If you can get 115 miles from a tank I think you can run Jerry's route if you don't run all the way over to Candelaria. Another consideration is to turn around at the top of the rimrock near Marfa. The road between there and Marfa is ~20 miles, paved and flat on top of the plateau. There's also gas in Marfa (I think). The real meat of the ride is from the rimrock south to 170 and Ruidosa.
I'll be riding it again but probably not the day the rest of you are (is that Friday?).
p.s. Be nice to the horses in the road and respect the signs that state it is a private road. Public access to this road is by the grace of the landowners. It was closed to the public not long ago.

Plus a few hiking opportunities, such as Santa Elena Canyon, and other spots to visit (Barton Warnock Center, Fort Leaton, etc). The paved road up to the Basin and through Green Gulch is wonderfully magical, but be aware of the tight hairpin turns near the top. Just take it slow and careful and you'll both be fine. Chisos Lodge in the Basin has some awesome cobbler and ice cream :trust: You can sit outside the lodge, eat cobbler, sip coffee and gaze across the basin and down to the desert below with Case Grande Mnt towering over you. Lots of hiking opportunities there, too.

On a KLR, for my tastes, yep. Heck, on the bike I'm taking to ride the rio, anything paved for longer than 30 miles is too far. However on my Strom, usually I call it quits around the 800 mile mark in a day.

I have been to the TPWD office where they feigned no knowledge of such a decal..... frustrating. I pointed to the stack of paperwork on the clerk's desk, the top of which was a clearly visible information packet on the very decal I was asking about.:angryfire
After they tried to send me to DPS they finally let me peek at the distribution list for the decal. I went to two dealerships on the list, and they no longer sell them for variuos reasons. They make no profit on them as they must buy and sell at face value, and they have to pay in advance if they want to have them in inventory. They are not available in Tarrant county, I phoned the rest of the dealerships listed as distributors, none of them sell them anymore.
I am riding without the decal. It is absurd to me that TPWD offices do not sell a decal mandated by TPWD itself. If that means I have to pass on going to BBRSP, then I will miss it this trip. After all Big Bend is a Big place.

IIRC, It is not required if staying on roads - which (I think) most of us are. It's an offroad use permit sticker that is needed when venturing off the road system and onto trails and such on land operated by the state.
