I was the bike in the accident. Not my fault luckily, and the insurance of the person that caused the accident is going to pay to fix my bike.

This Moring ~ 7:15
Traveling in Left lane on I-45 Southbound, traffic comes to an abrupt stop. I brake fine and come to a stop about 5 feet or so behind the Explorer in front of me. Guy behind me in an Integra seems to be just about stopped when BAM, a lady in an Expedition slams into the back of his car, forcing him into me, and me into the Explorer. Miraculously, I don't go down. In hindsight, I should have swerved onto the shoulder, and let the cages play dominoes by themselves.

The Damage
Swingarm is bent, rear rim bent, rear tire flat, and knocked off the reflector on the front fender. Forks didn't appear to be bent, but I will wait to see what the adjuster says when he/she comes out to look at the bike. The two cars behind me were pretty damaged. Check out the pics of the damage.

Glad you are ok. Sorry about the bike but it can be replaced or repaired. Where on 45 was the accident?

Never mind, I just saw the complete title.

So glad you weren't hurt any, considering all the damage the cars and your bike sustained.

Well, with the reflector gone like that I'm pretty sure it's toast. ;-)

Actually, with the arm bent it may well be totalled. Sorry...

I'm hoping it's not totaled, but if it is I am going to try and buy the bike back and fix it. I got prices for the swingarm, rear rim, and complete used front end if the forks and triple clamps are damaged. For all that will be ~$900

What you consider $900 may be a totally different amount for your insurance company ...

Glad you are okay, while it takes a while to get the bike fixed or to get a new bike, healing takes much longer... if you are that lucky.

Dang it, I can't see the pics here at work!!!!!

I will say one thing and I'll know better when I can get home and see the pics, but if the rear wheel took a direct hit hard enough to bend the rim, and swingarm then I'd be very careful about just replacing those items alone. I would almost bet that you may very well have some frame damage as well. Just a thought.

BTW, I'm glad as ever that you are alright and here to post about it. Those types of accidents scare the crap out of me.

Well, the insurance adjuster claims that the forks and swingarm are okay. When somebody gets here w/a car I am going to go over to my buddy's house and take a closer look at it and compare it to his bike, as we have the same make/model.

The adjuster makes their pass at damages, then the repair facility corrects the original estimate before making repairs. My last auto estimate was $3000, which everyone knew was low. The final tally was $8000.

Oh, and regarding being better off on the shoulder ... you could have as easily been crushed by a driver swerving to the shoulder. Its a game of inches, and comedy of errors.

Use the old chain alignment method of tiding a string around the tire, and then pull to each side of the fork. Measure to the front, so you're not worrying about the alingment. Make sure the distances MATCH! If not, push to have someone check it with an alignment jig.

Here's some pretty pictures (http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/sportryderswheelalignmentmethod.shtml)
