I don't think he meant a link - it used to say "500 posts unread"
That info is gone...

Chuck,
That is right... although mine said closer to 5,000 as I have been traveling so much with work of late that I have not been able visit reguarly.
Is that link gone for good?

We've been tracking some slow database queries over the last couple of days and we narrowed the problem down to the Unread Posts module. We're not sure why it's doing that yet, but for now it's been disabled.

Add me to the folks that noticed it missing. It was something I used several times a visit.

I did too, but the New Post button is only 2 inches to the left of the old one. Not a big issue so far.

The "New Posts" link on the Navbar has been there from day one :lol2:
I too like using the "Unread Posts" link that was in the welcome window. I will be trying to find out why it was causing problems. I want it back!

I reinstalled the old mod. I will be watching to see if it causes problems. The newest version of it caused high server loads due to really long queries...

Here is the deal.
:tab Both TWT and the ST-Owners site had this mod installed. We had been monitoring the server load and noticed it being higher than what we expected for the new machine. So then we got to digging. We started seeing that there were a LOT of MySQL queries for the ST site but not the TWT site whenever the load got high. More digging and we started seeing that the queries were taking a long time to complete. Given that both websites are running the same forum software, we started logging the query commands to see if that could point us in the direction of a custom Mod that might be causing the problem. Eventually, this lead to the Unread Posts mod.
:tab We were both running a very old version of that mod. The mod author suggested we update to the latest version. We did. Then we BOTH had the problem with the long queries and the server load went up even more  When I saw that, I pulled the mod on TWT and watched the queries/load display and TWT was no longer showing up. So I told Joe "Mellow", the STO admin, and he pulled the mod on his site as well. That put everything back to normal with low server loads.
:tab Just to see what would happen, I reinstalled the old mod. It does not seem to be causing a problem when run on our site  So I will be leaving it in for now.
:tab See... now you get a feel for what kind of stuff goes on behind the scenes to keep a site running. It seems like there is a never ending stream of these kinds of issues that always need attention ;-) Nothing really major, other than the recent server problems, just little niggling stuff that can drive you bonkers :lol2:

Well, the count is back but it doesn't look right - three pages of unread posts and the unread count is 50?

The unread post count up top is now "since last visit", whereas it used to be ALL unread posts.
I freaked out when I first saw it, and thought I'd lost all my "new" stuff.
