View Full Version : November Dirt days ride reports
I guess I will start this up since I am home and at the computer.
Today was an excellect day for riding at Red River. We had a blast although our timing was off most of the day and we seemed to miss meeting most of the TWT riders. They were off riding when we walked over to the big parking area. It was good to meet Brutus and Stickman though. Our group's crashes were mild for the most part. Graeme's (Calgary Yogi) KLR ate its cooling fan from a small lay down in some deep sand, his day got cut short because the mighty KLR was not getting enough airflow to keep cool without the fan. Bill (DFW Warrior) had a blast on his first dirt ride after getting the new to him, and almost new anyway WR-450. My son David was enjoying his first day on the older YZ-426-F that we picked up only Wednesday. The fan was the only busted bike part from the various crashes of the day. My bikes hit the ground a few times, twice for the XR, and four times for the CRF. I am thinking I may add brush guards to the CRF like I have on the XR. Although the bike did not break any of its parts, the same cannot be said for me. I broke a finger on the second get off from the CRF. Since it was the pinky of my clutch hand I just stuck it out when I clutched instead of wrapping all four around the lever and continued the fun.:flip:
When David gets back from his friend's house with his camera I will have to post up a shot of him with his new toy. We were so busy riding we only snapped a few pictures today.

Had a blast today for every inch of the 9.4 miles I did before the wimpy KLR died. Here is hoping the epoxy in the fan blade trick works.

We just rolled in a little while ago. Great to meet a lot of new folks, well put faces to the names that is. Didn't get to meet everyone but there is always next time. That's about all I'm going to write at this time since the shower just became available again and I still have sand in a few areas that ain't too comfortable....... :moon: Did look like everyone enjoyed their food and somehow Alex (Mopower) knew when Ken and Clark had the hot dogs ready at their camp. Says he just happened to show up to see if they were ready to ride again.
I'll post more later.

It was really good meeting you all, I had a lot of fun fumbling around back there, I need to hit some local trails to get my skill and confidence levels up! Thanks for the excellent time all you all and I promise eventually I will actually go riding with you! I just don't want to be annoying people hanging way out in the back and slowing people down. While you all are a forgiving group I would feel pretty self concious. For my third time out I am feeling pretty good. Only way to get better is ride more!

I'll be getting my personal coaching there for increasing my technical skills, like 'wheelie school' and how to turn corners at the top of a steep hill without smashing into the hillside

Where is that located? I would certainly be up for joining a ride (or rides) and apprecaite the offer! When you all thinking of going? The only thing on my immediate schedule is helping my ex move which may occupy a decent portion of the next two weekends but depending ho wmuch we get done I may even have at least a day each weekend to go hit the trails. :rider:

And you say you can learn to not smash into things? Your views intrigue me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. I am going to go get a spare clutch cable today, the first one broke and that added a little bit of challenge riding RR with about 1/4 clutch in addition to my mad noob skillz!

Thanks to everyone that made this one heck of a weekend. Kyle (ACCobra) had a blast and was asking if we could go back this weekend. Like Clark, I'm glad RRMT isn't in my backyard or I too would spend way too much time there.
Thanks to Greasemonkey for the breakfast makings, we couldn't have done it without you. We had enough food that I didn't have to use Brutus' dog for additional food.... :lol2:
The only injuries I heard about was a possible broken toe, a broken finger, a busted clutch cable and a couple pretty good bruises on Kyle's right thigh from a flight over the bars on our last ride.
If nothing else came of this weekend it was the fact that Kyle is now comfortable with his new bike thanks to the time he spent working with Jeff on his kick starts, stops, starts and the general attention he received when he was having problems. I don't know if it was all good cause now he wants to go back so he can take a trip to Joshua Tree. We had a couple of hill climbs that I thought I was going to have to stop and go back down the hill to help him up but to my surprize he almost ran over me as I was getting off my bike at the top.
I didn't go on any of the real group rides so I could work with Kyle but to tell you the truth I had more fun watching him improve with every minute he spent on his bike.
Too bad our resident PG wasn't able to attend, we had some interesting rocks for him to look at. I know I met a couple of the rocks up close and personal. I never knew a KX65 could throw a rock that hard. Thank God for helmets and chest protectors. One of the rocks hit my helmet so had I heard it echo and then the ringing in my ears was real loud. Thankfully I had just looked to the right so the rock hit at my left ear instead of in the face where it would have hit.
One or two additional comments on the red beans and rice, :eat: they did make for an interesting trip home.......... :lol2: and my apologies to the customers and crew at the Schlotski's (sp) in Denton... It wasn't my fault.

Definately a +1 on the breakfast those things were so good my dog snapped a bite right out of my hand! That's the first time she has ever forgot her manners with respect to food so that's some high praise there! Myself I had three big burritos and they were better than anything I've had in a long while!

Hemibee posted on ktmtalk.com and twtex.com about a ride at Red River Motorcycle Trails to wind down from the post racing season. Plenty of people from both forums answered the call and a fantastic weekend of riding ensued.

Brutus decided early on that he was going to get back to his caveman roots and cook a steak on the fire with a stick. He ate it and later on told me in confidence that it might not have been completely cooked. He was still up moving around the next day so that was a good sign.
I didn't take any pictures while riding the first day, but I did get a few around the campfire that night.

Personally I like my marshmallows golden brown not black and crispy.

At one point in the night a quadtard took off from a camp near ours, this forced Sheriff Buford T. Luster to round up a posse and chase them down to inform them their was no night riding. The culprits were caught and escorted back to camp.

The next morning breakfast was served up in the form of sausage and eggs all wrapped up in a tortilla. Mighty good and lots of thanks to the people who brought the food and the cook.

There was one group of party animals that went straight for the hard stuff for breakfast. This was after doing a couple of early morning laps. Maybe in my youth I could have kept up with them, but not now.
Sunday marked a good hard day of riding. Lust450 led a good short warm up ride in the morning, then we did another longer ride after everybody else got suited up. By this time I was feeling a little more comfortable in Pete's gate. After this we went back to camp to re-group. I ate a little sandwich, then mounted up for another ride. This would be the final ride for most of the crew and it was plenty long and hard. We started out with Pete's gate again, and then after doing most of it headed over to the west side for some rutted, rocky adventures. By the time we got back I was pretty beat, but managed to go out on a photo ride with Grady and Luster. Of course this turned into another race.

Grady in an attempt to appear cool, does a wheelie up a climb

Luster to not be outdone pulls his own wheelie.
http://chrisjennings.smugmug.com/photos/223189834-M.jpg
In the meant time, while they were showing off and acting like idiots I cross the finish line first claiming victory in the inaugural first man falling event.
http://chrisjennings.smugmug.com/photos/223189575-M.jpg
When we get back to camp we find a few quadtards who have infiltrated our front lines
http://chrisjennings.smugmug.com/photos/223189737-M.jpg
They were figured out when we spotted on of them pulling the classic foot on the back quadtard wheelie. You can see where the sneaky devil used a marker to make a counterfeit KTM hat.
Thanks to everybody for dragging me around this weekend. I ended up with 90 miles for both days and one incredibly dirty air filter. I can't wait until the next one.

Photojojo, those are some amazing shots! I am just speachless, I don't know how many times I have said "man I hate pictures because they never capture the moment" but yours certainly do! You are an artist!

And you say you can learn to not smash into things? Your views intrigue me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. My goal is to avoid smashing into things, especially with the throttle wide open........ That's different from falling down. I do plenty enough of that.
Rocky Ridge is east of Decatur. The park there has trails/routes that are relatively less challenging than Red River. A good place for beginners and intermediates to learn and practice skills. Red River will come later for me when I'm more skilled and comfortable with advanced techniques and trails.
At least two of us may be going to Rocky Ridge for a day next month. And I'll get plenty of sand practice in Big Bend over Xmas.
The cycle parks are fun and all; they are training grounds. But to me the real test is out in the real world on trails, desert, mountains, etc. That's what I'm preparing for. Red River will be like the graduation course and where I do my thesis. ;)
If you are interested in going to Rocky Ridge, we'll post it before we go.
