View Full Version : Female Mechanics Calendar - New for 2008, by Sarah Lyon
I don't recall if I posted about this last year, but Sarah Lyon has a new Female Mechanics calendar out for 2008.
She's a motorcyclist, photographer, and motorcycle mechanic who rode all over the country in the summer of 2006 tracking down and photographing female mechanics in their workplaces, including motorcycle mechanics, and published a 14 month calendar with the pictures and short bios. Last summer, she did 12,000 miles and now has a new calendar out.
Here she is with all her camping gear, which she swears all fits on the bike:

I bought her 2007 calendar because I like to support this sort of effort, and I'm glad I did because the pics are interesting and the mechanics' stories even more so. Besides, it is unique and a great conversation piece. The 2008 calendar also has some photo collages of her trip.

This is great. There are ladies on our board who could put together just such a calendar. For example ladies like Squeaky, rocketbunny, and anaconda come to mind. From what I've read on this board they are fairly adapt to working on and maintaining their bikes.
How would one go about putting something like this together using photos of our ladies? This would be a neat project for the 2009 year.

You could email Sarah and let her know you've got female mechanics running around, in case she decides to do a calendar for 2009.
Or, in case she's only after mechanics who make their living wrenching, you could do (for example) a Café Press calendar with your own pics. We certainly have some gifted photographers here in the group!
Here's their link for creating a 2008 calendar on Café Press:

I don't know when you'd be able to start creating calendars for 2009. And there are other companies out there (Apple, PhotoMax) that do the same thing.

Wasn't quite sure if sample #1 in that link was actually a woman.
Anyway, I thought a proper female mechanic calendar consisted of seductive machines and seductive women.;)

Well, then, there's always the Ridgid Tool catalog (http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/Calendar/), with its seductive women and seductive pipe wrenches...

I just noticed that Sample Chick #1 is standing in front of what appears to be a Honda CL360, just like my wife's. Even the right color! Cool.

You're looking for Garage Girls. (http://www.fastdates.com/GARGIRLS.HTM) Methinks these are for two different audiences.
The little lady has done it again. Sara Lyon has come out with a third Female Mechanics Calendar (http://www.sarahlyon.com/calendar/).
I started this thread about Sarah's 2008 calendar, and believe I mentioned her first one, the one for 2007, when I came across it in 2007. I get the feeling from her that she was surprised when she was able to find enough subjects for fourteen months' worth of calendar that first year, but as the calendars made their way across the country and around the world, word spread, and now she's got all sorts of spotters and recruiters out here finding the next Miss August. She rode all over the country on the Yamaha 750 Special (just like mine!) during the summer of 2006 and came up with quite a variety of female mechanics for 2007. She did likewise on her BMW R100S for 2008, and the 2009 edition looks like it's even better.
Anyway, here's the cover for 2009:

The overview page (http://www.sarahlyon.com/calendar/) gives to access to read press releases, see previews of a few months' subjects, and order your copy (or copies!). This calendar has been a kind of inspiration to young ladies interested in (and good at) wrenching, but who feel a bit intimidated at the prospect of entering a world widely perceived as Men's Territory.

If you go through her journey photos you see she attended a Dykes bash and gay parade. This could be for business, at the place at the time, or....
anyway looks like the women for women calendar is more to her market unless most of her support just happens from that side of the fence.
Funny... I've got her '08 calendar hanging on my wall, and I don't feel the least bit rainbow-ish.
