FORT WORTH -- A 21-year-old man, believed to be a military serviceman, died early Thursday in a fiery motorcycle wreck on the city's far north side, police said.

Officials were withholding the man's name until they're sure that his family has been notified, said Sgt. Rodney Bangs, supervisor of the traffic investigation unit.

The man, however, had a military identification card and his Texas driver's license listed a home address at Naval Air Station Fort Worth, Bangs said.

He said he did not know which branch of service the man belonged to. Base officials could not be reached for comment.

The wreck was reported bout 6:30 a.m. on Texas 170, also called Alliance Gateway, near the intersection with Old Denton Road. The area is about a half-mile east of the highway's intersection with Interstate 35W, about a half-mile southeast of Fort Worth Alliance Airport.

Speed appears to have caused the wreck, Bangs said.

Witnesses told police that the 2002 Honda motorcycle, traveling west at a high rate of speed, struck the back of a tractor-trailer that had just turned west onto the highway from Old Denton Road, Bangs said.

The crash caused the motorcycle to burst into flames, the police spokesman said.

The rider, who wore a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver later told police that he did not know the back of the rig had been hit, Bangs said. The driver continued south on I-35W, and had made it to Arlington where he heard a radio news report about the accident, the spokesman said.

The truck driver got out to check his trailer and saw damage consistent with a crash, Bangs said.

"He returned to Fort Worth and is cooperating with the investigation," Bangs said.

No other information was available at noon.

Its a terrible waste. To a parent, a 21 year old still seems like a child. RIP and condolences to the family and friends.

My rant has more to do with media than the crash:
"Speed appears to have caused the wreck, Bangs said."

Its like saying the crash was cause by wet roads. Since Bangs is a supervisor with the AI unit, he probably said "speed appears to be a factor ...", and the process of correcting his comments by reporters and editors fixes his statement.

Two leading causes of crashes are failing to observe the hazard in time, and taking faulty evasive action.

The report does say that witnesses saw the motorcyclist traveling at a high rate of speed.

I agree that speed is usually listed as the cause of accidents, but in this case from the evidence we have it appears justified.

RIP.
Now, why does the media always and I mean always say whether or not the person was wearing a helmet? Would it have made a difference here? Doubtful.

I'm a little confused here....it says he had a military ID on him, but they did not know what branch of service he was in? Did they remove that info from the new ID's or something? The last I knew, the ID listed your branch of service and has the seal of that branch on it.

I'm pretty sure they say whether a driver was or wasn't wearing s seatbelt even though it may make no difference in the outcome of the accident. I guess there are so few facts to report, they just toss them in.

I, for one, can not remember the last time I read/watched/heard on the radio a fatality accident when the commentator said anything about the person/persons not wearing/wearing a seat belt. Maybe they did but I sure don't remember it.
