They say one must look hard to find the natural beauty of the Permian Basin, and to a certain extent, that's true. But sometimes you don't have to search at all. You just look up and there it is, and it astounds you:

That's one thing you do get in west Texas . . . beautiful sunsets. It's all the dust in the air, I believe. Regardless, the sunsets are gorgeous. Great shots, Tim.

Okay, this was a couple of weeks ago near Milano, TX. I got there Friday evening before the rest of the riders were going to show on Saturday morning. Set up camp, opened a folding chair and popped the top on a Shiner and this was the evening show. Even had coyotes to sign the sun down.

"It was like just before the sun goes to bed down on the bayou. There was always a million sparkles on the water... like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny, it looked like there were two skies one on top of the other. And then in the desert, when the sun comes up, I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the earth began. It's so beautiful."

I once read a story many years ago about an elusive emerald green color that can be seen for only a brief instant at sunrise. The story said that as the sunrises, it goes through the full spectrum of colors with this marvelous emerald green being visible but for a flash of a moment before the colors go to the next color in the spectrum. The story was about a man who spent many MANY mornings perched on a hill overlooking a clear horizon, always watching for this elusive emerald green. One day, when the weather was perfect, the skies clear as a bell, he got a fleeting glimpse of it. He felt his life had been fulfilled.
I must have read that story 25 years ago and remember it to this day.

That very well could be the scenario. It's been a long time ago and I've slept since I read that book. :lol2:
"The Belt of Venus or Venus's Girdle is the Victorian era name for an atmospheric phenomenon seen at sunrise and sunset. Shortly after sunset or shortly before sunrise the observer is, or is very nearly, surrounded by a pinkish glow or antitwilight arch that extends roughly 10°–20° above the horizon. Often the glow is separated from the horizon by a dark layer, the shadow of Earth. The arch's light rose (pink) color is due to backscattering of reddened light from the rising or setting Sun. A very similar effect can be seen during a total eclipse of the Sun."

That ain't what WE saw from Enchanted Rock. All we saw was our lives flash before our eyes as we climbed up and then down that dang piece of granite in the rain. Wheeeee.

My favorite. Brings to mind Ezekiel 1:22, And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creatures was as the colour of the awesome crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.

This last one is a storm moving in. It kinda spooky out there when all you have for cover is a pickup. At least you can see it coming a mile away.
