Been riding for over 30 years, 26 years on the street. I've had several dirt bikes, a '71 Honda CB750, a '74 Sportster, a '81 GS750EX, and this bike, a '81 GS1100EX, which I purchased in 1981 when I was still enlisted in the military at the tender age of 19. Being the cheap *** that I am I've never bought another bike mainly because I never had a need to do so...it runs great, has more performance than 99% of us can use and is very reliable.
I enjoy riding with my friends and with any one of my daughters as passengers. I'm involved in a semi-organized ride that occurs twice each year in the Texas Hill Country. It is loosely put together by a group of riders who mainly ride older Japanese bikes but we welcome anyone who enjoys riding and is not stuck on having a "biker" image...we ride, not pose.

Hey Hap
Are you going to do the First Sunday ride this Sunday with the Halffast folks? I'll be there and a buddy of mine on his FJ1300. :chug:

with the Halffast folks?
If this is what I think it is, then I would love more info - I will be the first to admit I ride a tame (read: slow) pace, and love it.
Welcome aboard Hap! Look forward to seeing you on one of the upcoming 05 rides.

"Hey Everybody,
The ride leader here. For those who might've missed the post: Sunday January 2, 2005. We'll meet up at Parkdale Mall on the north end of Fudruckers. Riders meeting @ 9:15 am. The pace will be moderate with rest stops when the leader signals (filthy smoker).

If your a newbie, for a tease, find yourself a Roads Of Texas and check it out in two dimensions. Not too bad for mid-east Texas.

Of course I read this the day after the ride! I wanted to go but I had maintenance call duty at the plant this weekend and had to stay in pocket. I've been missing a lot of the Halffast rides the past 9 months...I need to get back in there!
I'm trying to get Carl and Lawrence to go on the next Hill Country ride...we're shooting for March or April sometime. Maybe you can make it.

Yea, heck, they even let me come along on the Fatboy! Of course the last time out one of our regulars brought both sons and was in need of another ride and so we let him borrow the GS650 that my wife is using as a starter bike to get back into riding! Maybe that's why they keep lettin' me tag along.
Good to see ya Hap!

Billy Ricks' 85(?) GS 700E. Notice the polished GSXR wheels and front end. This bike also has Pops Yoshimura Flatslides on it. It flies.

I can't find a really good picture of Mark's bike to show you. The Grey Ghost has to be seen in person to truly appreciate how beautiful it is. It's a work of art, truly. Mark's GS 1000 (don't know the year)

I'd have to have a towel handy if I got too close to the Grey Ghost, the kind of bike I saw growing up that I wanted, maybe I can go looking for one in a year or so..I've always wanted a KZ1300 with a mad max fairing on it, loud and fast..kinda thing that scares you when you don't pay attention

Wow, that is beautiful. Love the Blacked-out motor. Appears to be an '81 GS1000G (shaft drive) with aftermarket front fender and fairing.

Oh man, those are some gorgeous Standards!! Too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore. That Grey Ghost is nice, very cool to add the lower chin spoiler, adds a streetfighter flavor to it. Any of the guys out there have a Nighthawk 700? Man, I love those.

There's no nighthawks yet. There was a late 70's NAKED Gold Wing at the last ride. He just rode it to Big Bend and back too!

Hap,
One quick question, did you do some control system work in Willis while working on your EE?

Yeah I was there..............one of the boneheaded operators. I knew there couldn't be two Hap's that were EE's in the Golden Triangle area.

LOL! It's hard to believe that it's been 12 years since then! Last I heard, there were some layoffs after the Entergy "attack"...did you survive the cuts? Is Woody, Terry, and the others still there?

D.W. retired last September, Charlie Gomez retired 3 years ago, James transfered to The Woodlands 3 or 4 years ago (he is here on the forum too), Blaine moved from Op's Superintendent to Control Op's Supervisor, Larry and Billy both took early retirement in the merger, Terry passed away about 9 or 10 years ago, Cindy left the company about 8 years ago, Mrozic (sp) is now in the Baton Rouge plant support office, Bubba transfered to Hot Springs a couple of years ago, Tom Gilbert - Jimmy Mothershed - William Moore - Mark Guidry all took the severence package. Edgar is still there along with Horace Brazile, both are COS's and Woody was terminated about 6 or 7 years ago. I haven't heard anything about Donald but Richard Brown has his on consulting company. Who am I leaving out? Oh yeah, I was a COS until September when I transfered to the Performance Monitoring and Diagnostic Center in The Woodlands as a Senior Operations Specialist. Greg took the package also and I'm not sure what he is doing now. Johnny is at Riverbend and Kevin is in Florida working for an environmental company. Perry Walker is the La. Station plant manager.
There have been several other changes at the plant but it is still about the same. I got to get involved in the new burner management system that was put in before I transfered. It wasn't as big of a change as the MAX was but it is one sweet system.
Blaine has even started riding. He just bought his second bike. Not sure what it is, a RoadStar or something and still has the Virago he was riding for the past few years.

You mean like this:

I had this one for a short time. They only made it for 3 years. Unlike the CB750, the Nighthawk S was a high-reving machine with a double overhead cam engine, with redline around 11,000. It is also a shaft-drive.
No wind protection at all, however, and I was buffeted quite badly above 60mph.

Without a doubt, one of the better looking bikes Honda ever turned out. Early in 1991 I think it was, one of the cycle mags did a piece on the new (then) CB750 Nighthawk. They interviewed different Honda employees and designers, giving a history of the project. At the time, there hadn't been a Nighthawk for a while. I remember specifically reading where one of the project members said Honda polled alot of their dealers ahead of time, asking for input on the upcoming project. He said the overwhelming response from the dealers was "just bring back the Nighthawk S". That bike was very popular and apparently, alot of people really missed it.
I was interested in the new Nighthawk back then because I remembered how much I liked the Nighthawk S in the 80s. A riding friend of mine had one. It was an absolute blast to ride. It was agile, sort of like a naked Interceptor. I ended up getting a '92 model. It was familiar feeling, and it had nicer lines, but it was no Nighthawk S. I did keep it a few years though.
