Hi Everyone...
Well, my hubby has been riding his bike just about every day now. Today it got really cold when he had to leave for work at 3:30 am. It was about 30 degrees with a wind chill of 26...I can imagine just how cold it was on the bike. He has a good set of gloves and a good Icon Leather jacket. He is currently using leather legs which help the lower part of his legs, but I know his legs are getting cold.
Since a lot of you ride during the winter time, can you all provide some suggestions as to what to look for in riding pants. He wants something that he can throw over his uniform pants. Armour would be nice but we are on a really, really tight budget right now...So, can you share your gear experiences with me?
Thanks!!!

I just bought some fieldsheer overpants that are serving me well. They're ventilated nylon with a windproof/waterproof liner. A full-length leg zipper is very important.
They weren't cheap, about $150, but they are working very well, and you can certainly pay more than that for pants. I should be able to wear the outer layer in all but the hottest weather, too, to give me a level of protection far above jeans.

Do the Fieldsheer's have armor?

Olympia AirGlide II pants. Vented for summer, and have a nice liner for winter. Good armor as well.

I purchased similar to ThumperDan, but mine are made by TourMaster. They have armor in the knees, padding in the butt and hip area, and also can be zipped to the jacket in the back.

I'm on my second pair of FirstGear HT overpants and LOVE them!!!! They are toasty warm in the winter and not too hot up to around 80 degrees out. Waterproof, hip and knee armor, and overall just great craftsmanship. They are well worth the money.

After trying on a pair of Scott's for size, I ordered a pair of Tourmaster Cortech Overpants. Same as FS with knee armour and hip padding, also water resistant (add some spray-on stuff and it's fine unless you're going swimming). The were plenty comfy all the way through summer with just a pair of bicycle shorts too. For winter I had enough room to layer up long johns, fleece, etc.
I now have a pair of the Olympia Airglide, which come with full zip-in waterproof quilted liners.

It is hard to beat the Olympia Airglide pants. At $189 they may be a little more than you want to spend. We now have 4 sets in the family. The liner is good to go into the 30's and I wear mine in the +100's. They are simply one of the easiest pants to put on. The side zips go to the hip on both the pants and the liner. Waterproof with liner.

Another thought - try searching eBay/Craigs List for liners alone. Someone may have wrecked/torn/ruined the overpants and have the liners up for sale, then they can be paired with a pair of work pants for the warmth.

I have Darien pants and love them. But they are definitely not summer pants in Texas. I still wear them in the summer, but I'll probably see about picking up some Olympia Airglide pants before it heats up next year.

I bought a pair of Fieldsheer Four Season pants from motocyclecloseouts for only $120. They come in black or silver.
I've worn them once with the liner. Temp was only in the 40s and I was sweating by the time I got to work. Too warm for most days here by the bay. They should be great in the summer without the liner. Armor in the knees and hips, solid textile in the impact areas, mesh elsewhere. Full length zipper with velcro closures down at the cuff.

You know... funny that you mention that. My combo for really, really cold days are the HT overpants with the Fieldsheer 4 season liners inside them. They are much warmer that way than with the standard First Gear liners.

I won a $500 AMEX Gift Card (work thing) and have been wondering what to spend it on. And I need a good pair of pants to match with my Vanson Ventilator.:sun:

When you get flush with money, electrics is the way to go. But go back and reread post #7. Good info here. Great stuff. Hardy

Go to www.newenough.com and look at their closeouts, bargain bin, etc. This is a good family owned business right here in Texas.

+however many that makes now
More and more, I'm wearing mine all the time, even short trips. I keep thinking of my knee bouncing off the pavement even at slow speeds and it makes me shudder. Knee armor and hip pads just seem like a smart thing. I can survive in the summer with khanki's riding to work and today I wore them with jeans, no liner this morning and it was mid 30's . With the windproof insulated liner, I think they'd be good down to the 20's for me.

+ yet another for Airglide II pants. I wear mine ALWAYS when I ride, and I do a lot of tiny 1-5 mile trips as I go here & there during the day. It's the easy on/off that makes it feasible. I stop at a client's, pull the briefcase out of the 46L topbox, set it on the ground. Helmet goes into one side of the box, gloves on the other, pants folded twice on top of the gloves (leaving the full length side zips undone). Getting ready to leave, step back into the pants, zip down each side, ready to go.
