It's time to start getting plans and ideas together for an official trip, so....
Where: Inks Lake State Park (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/inks/). Update 2: I have made reservations at Inks Lake State park. 5 water-only camping spots, giving us 10 (including me) tent spots, hopefully in loop 300-304. It's first come first served, so we'll see. We should all be in a group though, wherever we end up. I had to cover the initial reservation fee ($60), so that will be split up among those camping. That cost will be applied to the campground fee, neither I nor TWT will make money.
Soooo....
I'll need to know who is planning on camping at the park with the group (that is, occupying one of the reserved spots). I don't anticipate we'll need more spots than we have reserved, but just in case.... Post up or PM me your confirmation. If you already have trailer, Sunset Beach, or other arrangements made, don't worry 'bout it.
<edited to add: Trailers < 26' long, pop-ups, and camper shells are permitted in the loop, 1 per spot.>
Alsooooo...
There's a variably enforced 2 vehicle per spot rule. Last time we were up there we didn't have any problems with multiple bikes per spot, but that doesn't mean we won't this time. What I'm trying to get at is, if you plan to truck or trailer your bike up (I probably will), you may have to park your cage in the large lot at the park entrance. As we approach trip time, I'd like to have an idea who is trucking/trailering up, so we'll know what the recovery vehicle situation is. It's also helpful for those riding up who may want to stash a bag in a cage for delivery.
For those not inclined to camp, other accomodations are of course fine, but will not be set up by the organizers.
Burnet Hotels (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Burnet,+TX,+United+States+of+America&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title)
When: April 11-14. Travel up Fri, ride Saturday & Sunday, travel home Monday. Then pay the tax man.
Travel: Whatever suits you. I dunno if I'm gonna truck or ride up yet. If a trailer comes available, and if there's people that wanna share the trailer ride up, I can tow.
Routes: TBD. Or made up on the fly. I'll be looking at routes that include the 33x's. DS routes are up to the DS Ride Coordinator.
Activities: Riding, camping & whatever that includes for you. I'm sure we'll make a stop at the Lone Star Motorcycle museum. I know for some folks that's an all day visit. I can see as much as I care too in about 1/2 an hour. While it's early to start worrying about it, don't forget your:
Cards
Frisbees
Footballs
Fishing poles
Swimming garb(?)
Acoustical instrument
Food: It's camping. Whatever works for you. Make it as elaborate (or not) as you like. There's a couple restaurants not too far from the campground that might be ok for a group dinner one night, or just making an evening run for 1 or 2.
Costs: Fuel, food, travel, accomodations. I'll post up the campground costs when I get the reservations. Tent sites are $12/night + $4 day use fee. There is no rally fee.
RULES: (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1528)
This is a TWT Sponsored Event. So....
1. Wear the gear! At a minimum you must have a DOT approved helmet, gloves, and jacket. We'd be much happier to see good boots and riding pants ;-)
2. NO squidding! This means no wheelies, stoppies, burnouts, etc,... We do not want to attract undue negative attention.
3. No passing on the right! If you are behind a slower rider, pass safely on the left. It is preferrable that they know you are coming so you don't freak them when you pass by them.
4. Speeding is done at your own risk! Sure we all ride a little quick at times. If you get a ticket, don't bother blaming me. If you come upon group members that have been stopped, keep riding and find a place to stop farther up the road. LEO are not going to be thrilled if a lot of other bikes start pulling up.
5. Ride your own pace! I know you've all heard this before. Take it serious!! You will not get left behind. I stop the group at all turns in the route so we can regroup. It is rare for the group to wait more than a minute or two at most even for the slow riders. I will not continue until I get a thumbs up from the last person to arrive. Really, I want everyone to take this serious. Picking people and their bikes up out of ditches is NOT FUN!!
6. Group formation. On straights, we ride in a staggered formation with at least a one second gap between the person ahead of you. DO NOT CROWD THE RIDER IN FRONT OF YOU!! If you are all over the back of the person in front of you, you need to go ahead and pass them when it is safe. There are deer out in East Texas and if they have to swerve or brake to miss a deer, you need to have time to react! The staggering is only required for straights. When you hit the curves, take whatever line you think is best to get you through the corner safely.
7. No booze! We do not tolerate drinking until the end of the day when we are off the bikes. May sound kind of strict, but that's the way it is.
8. If one gasses up, we all gas up! I know this rule bugs some people. However, it will never fail that a few people will wait to get gas because they don't "need" gas yet. This totally screws up everything because they get out of sync with the group and we wind up having to make more stops and waste more time than we would if everyone will just fill up at the same time. I will hound you about this!!
9. Passing other traffic. I expect you to pass other vehicles in a safe manner. This does not include passing through a corner on the double yellow! If the bike in front of you passes, DO NOT assume it is necessarily safe for you to pass as well!! I have seen way too many close calls because of this behavior. Remember, we don't want every car we pass to be pissed at motorcyclists because we are obnoxious ;-)
10. Keep track of the rider behind you. You should be checking your mirrors every time you get done with a set of curves to make sure the person behind you has come through without incident. The idea is to make sure no one gets left behind as a result of mechanical issues or an accident. If you turn around, then the person ahead of you will eventually turn around, and so on, until the whole group comes back. We will do whatever is necessary to get all bikes and riders home.
11. Breaking away from the group. There will be riders that need to cut the day short for whatever reason. If you are one of these riders, you need to make sure that the ride leader knows you will be leaving and when. This is important because otherwise, it will be assumed that something bad has happened to you!
Updates: Remember to check back here for updates.
:tabUpdate 1: I recently had reason to be reminded of a 1/2 idea I had with another TWT guitar weirdo. So, if you're inclined and capable (of carrying it, capable of playing is optional), bring the acoustical instrument of your choosing.
:tabUPDATE 3
The reserved tent spots are officially filled! I'll add a new list if necessary for standby. Of course, anybody could just call and make their own reservations if spots are still available.
:tab Update 4:
THIS WEEK:
Mon-Wed: Procrastinate
Thurs: Panic Shop, load bike, gear.
Fri: If necessary, meet at 9:30 at Exxon on 290 & Huffmeister, load gear for people that need extra stuff (within reason) carried up, (first come first served.) Roll out NLT 10:00. If nobody speaks up that they want something carried, I'll skip this meet and roll straight from home.
Tent Campers: When you get to the campground, tell them you're with the "Simpson" group.
PM me for cell #.
Anything else?
Weather looks friendly enough...
:tab Update 5
The money question:
(For tent people)
Assuming everybody shows it will be $6/ night fri-sun. We might have to do some math to keep it fair for the one-night only folks, but it won't be more than $12/ night. You'll owe me either 6 or 12 for Fri night, then 6 or 12 to the park for Sat & Sun nights.
Don't forget there is also a 3 or 4 dollar day use fee per day.
RV/ Cabin/ B&B/ homeless people: Whatever you worked out
Players: If you're in, let us know your name & bike. And "I'm definitely in unless...." means you are a maybe.

Just checked the locations - 137 miles apart. Probably won't do this, as my riding is planned for points south of I-10.

We will have route sheets, HOWEVER, in the past we've only had route sheets so that we had something to deviate from. Anybody is free to do their own thing or split off from the group if necessary, BUT at least in pairs if splitting off, and make sure the ride leaders know a general direction and route you're taking, and what time you plan to be back. Depending on the number of participants, multiple groups are also possible.

Yah, that'll be the deal. I had to reserve the first night for each spot, so everybody will pay me for the first night, and then pay the park directly for the rest. With people doing various nights, we may have some math to work out, but it'll work out.
Unless you have a giant M.A.S.H. type army tent, fitting more than one into a spot isn't a problem.

Assuming a clockwise loop on the lower end:
How about, instead of taking boring 41 over to boring I-10, cut off on FM1340 thru Hunt & Ingram back to Kerrville, thence onward. It's a pretty nice road sorta along the Guadalupe.

Butting is always appreciated. I plotted that ccw, but cw works too. My only concern is mileage, 350 can be a lot for some folks, particularly in a group on unfamiliar, technical roads. If the mileage & difficulty isn't a lot more that'd be fine. If it is a lot more miles & difficulty, we could split up as necessary.
AND (for every/anybody): Nobody should feel committed or required to the "planned" routes. This is a rally, rather than a tour, so you can just do your own thing, or a group thing, or smaller groups. Just make sure we know what your doing so we don't think we've lost you.

Me too, 'cept from NW Houston. Anybody want coolers, bags, gear, whatever carried up, meet up with me during the week prior. First come first served. I'll also set up a quick pre-ride-meeting/get together somewhere on the NW side of town Friday morning if necessary.

Two tents per spot. Maximum 8 persons per spot. The spots we get should be adjoining, so the boundaries of the 2/8 rules may be flexible. In short, as long as we don't have more than 10 tents or 40 people on our loop, we likely won't get bothered by the Mounties.

According to Big A here (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26145) portions of 337 may be torn up when we're out there. Just a heads up.
I just now posted the following message on another thread in TWT ("3's update"). Since it will have meaning to those folk riding on this rally, I am 'double posting' it here too.
I will be going through there on April 7 on my way from San Marcos (via Bandera, Medina, and Vanderpool) to Leakey, Texas for a Texas Forest Service fire seminar. I will most definitely drive thru 337 on my way. I will be in my Ford van, with my trusty Kawasaki ZL600 stashed inside.
I promise to check out this work on 337 (east of Leakey) and report to you all here the condition. I will try to get pics of it too, but can't promise to get the pics downloaded to my laptop and then re uploaded to here before I get home on April 10. I will get them on here on April 10, and will try to get them here earlier.
Some forums frown on 'double-posting' messages. Since I have heard no such rule here, I think I will also post this message on the TWT Spring Hill Country Rally forum, since they will be affected by this bit of road work too.

Anyone planning on dualsporting, or is this intended to be a paved ride?
The "official" routes (by "official" I mean whatever path I'm on as default leader if necessary) will be paved. BUT - anybody can do any ride anywhere they want, lead their own group or do their own thing.
Just make sure to let the ride leaders know if you're breaking off, and if a person or group is doing their own ride, let somebody know approximate plans/ destinations.

03-31-2008, 02:58 PM
umm, yes.
Depending on your appetite for food and early mornings, some people make breakfast runs pre-ride. Nothing really likely (or nearby) is leaping to mind, so it will be worth being prepared to make/ have a breakfast. As elaborate (or not) as you like.
Lunch is wherever we end up en route. Or carry something with you. We'll likely stop about midday at the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum, with the Ace Cafe. That may be an option. Or carry something with you.
Dinner is camp stove/grill standard, limited only by your creativity and taste, or make an evening run to a smallish handful of semi-nearby options. The (I am not making this up) Steak Barn is close.
Oh, and the spot's yours.
BILL N
03-31-2008, 03:06 PM
Ok, I"ll probably just bring some breakfast stuff and wing it for dinner, not really set up yet for motorcycle camping beyond a tent and sleeping bag. Once I get some side luggage I'll be more prepared. I have a class till 5pm on Friday so I should be rolling in a little past 7pm...thanks, Bill

UPDATE 3
The reserved tent spots are officially filled! I'll add a new list if necessary for standby. Of course, anybody could roomate with somebody else, or just call and make their own reservations if spots are still available.
ETA: 10 days away!! Check:
:tab TIRES. If in doubt, replace or bring a replacement(s) and tools. Never fails, somebody who was sure they were fine ends up showing cord 150 miles into a 300 mile day. If you can already see wear bars, don't wait.
:tab GEAR: Gear 1, camping: If in doubt, get more/ better than you think you need. If you end up soaked because you brought your Snoopy tent and Barbie sleeping bag, you have my sympathy, but you ain't sharing my tent.
:tab:tab Gear 2, riding: BARE MINIMUM: Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots over the ankle, jeans. In this case, less is NOT more. If you don't have this bare minimum kit, beg, borrow or steal till you do.
:tab BIKE: Beyond tires, work out whatever gremlins are buggin you, or whatever impending catastrophic failures are foreseeable. Chain tension, lever play, etc. Don't make the group wait while you fiddle fuses for heated grips.

Uhh, you're already committed to this ride, and I missed the post where you snuck out. (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showpost.php?p=349150&postcount=20)
8:00 am ish should get you there in time to relax for a little while before KSU. I think we'll be in loop 300-304.
I had a cabin, vacation approval and everything, but couldn't get the girls excited about it. We spent it all to go to the Ingelside Pie Run instead.

Just a heads up on 337, the construction isn't that bad at all. We were just there along with 4,000 Harleys, no problems.

I am addicted to coffee, unfortunately. I have to drink it in the morning or I get my withdrawl headache. Is anyone bringing a coffee pot? I have one I can bring with a small stove, ect but it takes up quite a bit of room on the FJR in the bags. I will bring it if necessary but if there are other options I would like to hear them.
Thanks.

I am addicted to coffee.
+1.
Option 1. Stagger, stumble and fumble around until the first stop. (Generally happens early in the ride). Get coffee.
Option 2. Be exceedingly nice (or be a BSG) to Squeaky, stand in line, get small but good cup from the jet boil.
Option 3. Bring just your pot, you can put it on my camp stove.
Option 4. Buy a Goldwing. Decide on espresso, latte, or regular. Push the right button.

I don't have enough time this week for option #4 so it looks like I will go with option #3. If you have the stove and propane that will save me a lot of space. I will bring my perculater pot and coffe. I will be able to make excess coffee if anyone else wants coffee as well, just bring your own mug.
For all who are arriving on Friday, what time do you plan to arrive at the park?

Here I am: back from my 3-day car trip to Leakey via RR 337 from Medina thru Vanderpool and on to Leakey. I was on this stretch of road on Monday afternoon, April 7, about 3 PM. It was not raining, so construction crews were operating full-bore along this stretch. The construction zone started about 5 miles east of Leakey, and continued all the way into the town of Leakey. I am going to post 6 or 8 pics of the road construction as I snapped pictures thru the windshield of my Suburban as I followed the pilot car from east to west. I had to wait a long time (15 or 20 minutes at this first one-way red light, waiting for the pilot car to return. Once we got underway, he zipped along pretty good. A group of cyclists happened to be going west to east as I just started my east to west run.
My overall assessment of the difficulty of riding thru this construction zone is: Not bad if it is dry. It was mainly just dusty, and your cycle will be super dirty after riding thru it. IF it happened to be raining, it would be YUCKY in the extreme.
Look at the following pics I took on Monday afternoon, April 7 (2 days ago).

Update 6
Near last minute thoughts:
Firewood. Bring whatever you can. There's no such thing as too much.
Tools. See Firewood. Sometimes the things that seem the least necessary/ most obscure end up being critical. OTOH, don't go crazy. It's highly unlikely we'll need your chop saw. But a gas powered blender.....
Gear, riding: Duh. Helmet, jacket, boots over the ankle, gloves, and at least jeans.
Gear, camping: You get what you pay for. Don't complain if you end up cold and wet in the middle of the night in a Barbie tent and Scooby sleeping bag.
Rides: There's a couple seriously fast people on the trip, among whom I most definitely do NOT number. Trying to keep up while riding over one's head is a very good way to find oneself on one's noggin. And it's not fun. Ride your own ride, at your own pace. Unless you go out of your way to leave the group, you WILL NOT GET LEFT.
Rides, redux: When you hear that little voice that says "Man!, I'm really riding good!" That means you are about to crash. DAHIK.
Rules: In addition to the TWT rules, the following are in effect through Monday:
:tab 1. No crashing
:tab 2. No crying

FYI, a cold front with a line of storms came through the area this morning. About a half inch of rain. Forecast is for clear skies, 70's during the days and 40's at night all the way through Sunday. Looks to be a beautiful weekend for you all. Too bad I'm heading to Houston.
Still packing, got the FJR loaded up-hope I can get it off the center stand.
I will not be able to bring firewood but I can help get some (pay$) once I get there. I will probably be there Friday from 2-5pm or so. Look for a blue FJR, me and a tent and maybe a six pack.
I plan to meander down from Fort Worth tomorrow. Once I get there I will set up camp and then have to make a run to the store for refreshments and hopefully some food to cook out.
I hope we all get to camp in the same area.

If anyone knows where I can pick up a bundle of firewood on my way into the park Saturday, I'll have a bungee net and an empty back seat.
Got my luggage mount fixed today (if you ask me, it's better than it was before!) and I'm practically still packed from the last camping trip!
OK, I have one question on tent camping. I know you have paid for the first night already and we will pay you for it.
When I get to the park do I have to go inside the building and pay for the other nights or can I do that at the booth? Also I am only staying Friday/Saturday night so I guess I just pay for those nights, or will we loose a reservation for one of the spots if someone does not pay for Sunday night as well, since we may be sharing each site.
I hope that was not confusing, just trying to do the right thing here.

What I intend to happen is we will get together Fri night or Sat, maybe briefly on Sunday for the late-late comers, and figure out how the money works out, get everybody to put their fair share in, and then pay the folks one lump sum for the whole deal.
Here's my thinking on the math, tell me if I'm way off base. We take the total bill (Should be about $180)/ person-nights (6-10 people per night, with coming & going). Everybody pays that number x however many nights they stay. (Think man-hours)
So if the total number of person-nights is, say 25, thats 180/25= 7.2 So that's $7.20 per night you stay. If you stay one night, $7.20. 3 nights, $21.60. Day use fees will obviously be per person.
When you get there, you should just be able to say "I'm with the Simpson group" and they'll tell you what spots we're in.
Hope that wasn't confusing, just trying to do the right thing here.:;)
Just finished taking the top layer of dirt off the bike, so I won't be too embarrassed to be seen next to Kent's shiny new mo-sheen. Trying to run through my head of all the stuff I'll realize I forgot about when I get to Austin.
When you get there, you should just be able to say "I'm with the Simpson group" and they'll tell you what spots we're in.

I am back and tired. We did do limecreek, cow creek today. Then I just slabbed it back I35 to get home by 5pm. Man that headwind sucked heading north. I guess it was payback for having tailwind going down on Friday.
Saturday we hit 16, 337, 39 and a few others I could not remember, awesome day for riding, logged about 340 miles. Perfect weather for camping as well.
Thanks ST rider for setting all this up, everything was great. It was nice to meet everyone and ride with everyone. Thanks for waiting for me to pack up this morning before we headed out to limecreek road. If I have any good pictures I will post up later. I know Scott should have a few good ones.
