Last night around 8 PM I was riding southbound on Memorial Drive through the Memorial Villages (Bunker Hill, Spring Valley, etc) in West Houston near Memorial City Mall. If you've ever ridden through there you know about the dog-leg curves.
I was approaching a curve at about 15 mph when an IDIOT in a pick-up decided to try and turn in front of me hoping he could beat me across Memorial. The reason I say idiot is because he clearly saw 2 motorcycles approaching him and thought his 5000 lb Chevy extended cab pick-up could beat us. I started braking and when I realized he wouldn't make it I laid my bike down. There was on-coming traffic so I couldn't make any other evassive moves. Thank goodness I was braking and going so slowly. I hit the ground and pushed my bike away so it ended up about 10 or so feet from me.
When I regained my composure I realized I was sitting on the side of Memorial and was still alive. My friend who was trailing me stopped safely thank goodness.
Neighbors heard the accident and called 911. The Memorial Village police (3 cars) were there in less than 3 minutes. Then 2 paramedic crews came. And even a Harris County Constable patrol came. The police took my info and my report. The paramedics looked me over...only scraped knees and a sore shoulder. The cops then talked to the pick-up driver who said he didn't know why I laid the bike down because he saw us coming and would never pull out in front of a motorcycle. It's a good thing I was slightly groggy or I woulda kicked the guys a** for being so stupid and for lieing. He backed his truck way out of the intersection and said that is where he stopped.
Hhe never even asked how I was...JERK!
The police are doing the report and actually canvassed the neighborhood to see if anyone saw the accident. I will get the copy tomorrow or Wednesday.
So the net results......
Thank God for crash bars on my V-Strom. And thank God that I just put that top case on. Both saved major damage to the bike. It runs. A few scrapes.
Arai Helmets kick a**. I need to replace it cause it definitely hit the pavement and saved my head.
I have to give the Memorial Village Police Department a huge thanks for the professional manner that they handled things. I think the lead officer wanted to kick the driver's a** too. He told me he believed my version of the story and would continue to investigate till he was satisfied.
If you don't wear a full face helmet please consider doing so. It saved my face and mouth from being messed up big time.
If you ride or drive through the Memorial Villages (Bunker Hill, Spring Valley, etc) be very careful of IDIOTS turning into Memorial. And if you happen to know any of their officers (or if you get pulled over by 1 of them) thank them for being the great professionals they are.
Now I need to get a new helmet so I can start riding again soon. :rider:
