We are in, but we probably won't get there until after 11. My lovely wife, Kathy, has been picked for some sort of survey on motorcycles and gear. Our appointment is that morning at 9:00 AM in Frisco. Don't know how long it will take, but she is getting paid $75 to do it. After it is done we will ride over.

Hey Bill, that sounds good; I'd planned on that same route. The Run starts at 11:00, and it's 135 miles to Ponder from Lindale going through those towns. I figured on leaving at 8'ish. Are you coming to Lindale on I20? If that's the plan I can meet you at the Burger King parking lot.

I won't be there because I'll be bombing the back roads in east Texas. Ya'll eat some pie for me. However, I overheard some of the DFW street riders discussing their concerns about riding up Blue Mound Road/Highway 156 from Fort Worth.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=13425842825113344981,32.846060,-97.342840%3B18022279439000143699,32.916440,-97.348640%3B8344532942216689741,33.183267,-97.287906&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=32.843521,-97.342772&daddr=Blue+Mound+Rd+%4032.916440,+-97.348640+to:W+Bailey+St+%4033.183267,+-97.287906&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=32.844206,-97.342408&sspn=0.0042,0.009978&ie=UTF8&ll=33.031693,-97.261963&spn=0.536516,1.277161&z=10&om=0

I just rode from I820 to Ponder on my round-about way to Denton. Skip the section between I820 and US287. Too much traffic and construction. Pick up 156 at 287 (destination B on the map). Speed limit is a sedate 55mph from there to Ponder, other than the speed traps at Haslett and Justin. The pavement is good all the way, no potholes, no gravel. The intersection at Highway 114 is being rebuilt, but that construction zone does nothing to ruin the ride. 156 between Justin and Ponder is also under construction, but the pavement is very good and no garbage in the way. The workers are doing a good job of keeping the through lanes clear. There are a few offsets to negotiate, but the transitions between the various paved areas are barely detectable by feel, very easy to negotiate.

So, anyone heading to ponder from the south who wants to relax the last 20 miles instead of bombing down the interstate will find 156 a nice alternate route.

RedPill
01-24-2008, 03:21 PM
Hwy. 156 from 287 is how I plan to go. Makes it a nice ride instead of a fight for position on I-35W. I hope the weather cooperates. It is supposed to be clear on Saturday, but we all know how forecasts can go.

Okay, out of Iredell:

FM 927 to Hwy 144
N on 144 to FM 203
W on 203 to Hwy 67
W on 67 to FM 51
N on FM 51 through Granbury, Weatherford, and Springtown
E on FM 2048
N on FM 730
E on Hwy 114
N on Hwy 287/81
E on FM 407
N on FM 156 to Ponder

I think that this represents a good "middle of the road" route. To make it twistier, you'd have to stray further west (out of the way) and to make it quicker, you'd have to travel to the east (more congested). The last bit will get you some highway time, but I figure that's right about the point where y'all would want to hurry up and get some lunch. Hope this helps.

Same here. I've unsuccessfully tried to make 2 of these last year. Maybe I'll have better luck in 2008.

Any decent routes from Plano? Starting near 75 and Legacy? Nothing too out of the way. Was thinking of taking 380 to Hwy 156, just so I would avoid 35.

And that part of the ride was dual sport... :lol2:
(according to sharkey anyway...) :-P

No worries about that this year. That stretch of gravel road is now some of the nicest asphalt in north Texas. You guys are in for a treat.

I like your idea for a meeting place better than mine.:thumb: I'm assuming this is the Starbucks just south of I-20? Let's meet up and plan for kickstands up at 0800. Any more of the Tarrant or Johnson county gangs care to join us?

I would like to join you. :rider:

Yes-I called the restaurant and gave them our approximate numbers. They are excited to have us again. I also warned them to have plenty of pie available.

Are you worried about being cold?! The national weather service says it's going to be 68 tomorrow........................wuss! :nana:

Saturday: Areas of fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Calm wind becoming west southwest around 5 mph.

It's the 35* in the AM that I was thinking about. So I guess all this smack talk means you'll be riding up?

I didn't think so.

Last min decision to make this ride for sure but I am a local to these parts. Along with that last min decision, I thought why not do a dualsport ride while I am at it.

I cooked up a loop that incorporates a favorite section of mine just north of Ponder. The loop winds west and drops through the LBJ Grasslands and then ends up close to where we began. The loop is 150 miles or so. Ham and I will be riding it. We would be happy to have some dualsporters join us. 85% gravel roads.

To do this, we need to be leaving Ponder at 11:00. We plan on getting there by 10:00. If you are interested just show up a bit earlier. Ham has a red KLR and I will be on a DRZ400 (blue with 4 gal clear tank). Again gassed up and ready to go at 11:00. See yall there.

Last year I shot up to thru New Hope, then over on 455 thru Weston all the way to Bolivar, then down. That wasn't a bad ride, but doubled the distance.

Tomorrow, I think I'm going quick and straight up tollroad to 720 to either 380 or maybe zig zag up 423 to 1385, then over through Aubrey.

I guess I had it easier than most, since I didn't have to leave home until about 10:15. By that time the fog was mostly gone and the temp was up a bit. I had no visibility problems and the roads were'nt wet, except in one place where there were puddles from some construction or such. I'm sorry to hear we had one unplanned off-road excursion.
