I read about one here and can't seem to find it. As I recall, the cast of a movie stayed there not too long ago. Idea?

I'm originally from Sanderson and am very well acquainted with the towns in the Big Bend. The Gage Hotel doesn't look anything like it used to because it has been expanded greatly over the last few years.

I hate to say it but much of the Big Bend area has changed a lot to fit some image that the new owners have in their minds which they seem to think will be regarded as "authentic" by the many tourists who pass through. The thing is, much of the new image is not authentic at all and looks more like some fake Santa Fe or Taos stuff than anything that was ever there before.

The Gage Hotel that used to be there just doesn't exist anymore.

You may also be thinking of the Paisano in Marfa.

See: http://www.hotelpaisano.com/ There are lots of photos available.

I never stayed there but it's very interesting to look around in the lobby and the courtyard. When the movie, "Giant" was filmed near Marfa, many of the cast members stayed at the Hotel Paisano. The last time I was there, they had a display about the movie along with some autographed photos of the stars.

There have been two movies recently filmed near Marfa: "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood." The latter being filmed almost entirely in and around there with the former being filmed only partially in the Marfa area. If you heard about a movie cast/crew staying there recently, it was probably one of those two. In addition to those movies, "Fandango" and "Sylvester" were also filmed near Marfa back in the mid-80's.

The courtyard with the fountain makes you feel like you are in a Spanish villa. The hallways and lobby have a very historic feel to them. It's a very classy place that has maintained itself well over the years. I can't speak for the rooms themselves but I bet they are nice. Personally, I would not hesitate to stay there.

Hope this helps some. Take care.

Doug

Lanna and Joe also own The Hotel Limpia (http://www.hotellimpia.com/)

Don't forget the Indian Lodge (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/indian_lodge/) as well.

Both are in Fort Davis, which is just up 17 from Marfa.

I visited the Paisano Hotel a few years back and the fact that the cast of "Giant" stayed there is a source of great pride for them. Just walking through the lobby there are numerous photos that are hard to miss. If you walk into the lobby's wash room, you can see the exact spot that was used by James Dean, Rock Hudson, Dennis Hopper, Chill Wills, and probably Mercedes McCambridge!

That's funny! Your pic just gave me an idea....we could start a thread about famous hotels and/or landmarks but instead of posting the standard pretty pictures, we could post pics of the restroom facilities in a contest to see who can find the worst facilities in the best places. Disgusting? Possibly. Funny? Yes. At the very least, it might encourage those places to keep the restrooms clean.

Filmed on location and on my favorite road, Pinto Canyon Road.

La Kiva I mean. Not the men's room. That could change, I guess.
