Put me "in" - it is supposed to be STScott's first Pie Run and I will be there to make sure that he doesn't get in any trouble... ;-)
It will be an overnighter (maybe two) for me. I also want to see the USS Lexington (and device 2F103).
Definite. Were arriving Friday (car and bike) and leaving Sunday. The girls will be walking to the beach from the Holiday Inn Express in Port Aransas.

I have a house on the water in Lamar, next to Goose Island state park. If any interest, some can camp in my yard with bath and kitchen privelages. Outside kitchen and bath. Also great view of Aransas bay fron the decks. Just a short ride to PIE!!!! Also have pier to try and catch a meal under the lights. I will know for sure later as we get closer, that I will be there. Any interest?:rider: :rider: :rider: :rider: :eat: :eat: :eat: :eat: :eat: :eat:

My 12th Wedding Anniversary is the weekend of the 29th
But seeing how I was the one who voiced my concerns to Chris that all the Pie Runs were 6+ hours away from the South Texas folks and he was kind enough to put Ingleside (10 -15 min from my driveway) on the Pie Run schedule..........................
Please put me down as a DEFINITE :eat: :rider:
Also, if anyone needs any info on the area just ask me. If you PM me I'll also give you my phone # so you can call me if you need to. There are lots of things to do in the surrounding area.
Scott / Chuck - If you have any specific needs as far as coordinating with the restaurant, let me know. It would probably be easier for me to do it since it's pretty muchin my back yard.

Night Carrier Landing Training Device?
Device 2F103 - A-7E NCLT
Yes sir. That one is either from NAS Lemoore or NAS Cecil Field. I am interested in how much of it was donated to the museum. I didn't work on that one as much as the 2F111 (A-7E WST), but supported it from 1981-1991. I still have some of the documentation.
Texfire
03-02-2008, 02:18 PM
So is it a computer simulator or some mechanical setup? Color me intrigued.
Gilk51
03-02-2008, 02:42 PM
It was a Navy training device from 1972 to 1991 (when the A-7E was decommisioned). It included a cockpit on a small, 5-DOF motion base, an instructor station, Harris H800 computer, and several I/O racks. All of the cockpit controls and boxes related to carrier landing (weapon system was in-op) were operational, including comm-ops on radios (no actual transmission).
Graphics were a circa-early 70, custom vector-based stroke writer that just rendered lights - well, it was a NIGHT carrier landing sim. :-P Fully operational FLOLS and deck lights for CV-43 USS Coral Sea, CVN-68 USS Nimitz, and (I am pretty sure) CV-16 USS Lexington (gotta double check that). Manual approaches and full Mode 1 supported.
A-7E squadrons were stationed at NAS Lemoore, CA, and NAS Cecil Field, FL. The device on the Lexington is from one of these sites. I am pretty sure that the other one was scrapped. The two WSTs are disassembled, shipped to Patros, Greece, and now support (still?) the aircraft for the Helenic Air Force.
Sorry, that was probably more than you wanted to know...

The regular time is usually 11:00 (per wizzerman). But I think 11:30 would work for me - I'll be staying in the area Friday night and could probably use the time after pie eating to hot foot it home.
But I'll go with whatever the majority wants - the 1 PM may work better for those that are closer...

Just a reminder for those that didn't see this in the other Thread, here are just some of the things to see in the area while at the Pie Run :
Since I live within 15 min of the Ingleside location, I wanted to throw some potential activities to do out there for those attending which may make up for roads that don't have as much of a fun quotient as you're used to.
ALL of these places are within a 15 - 25 min ride of the Pie Run location :
USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier Museum

Texas State Aquarium

Corpus Christi Museum Of Science & History

Gilk51 (Chuck),
I stopped by the Pie Run location today and met with the owner to make sure they will be ready for us. I told him that I would update him at the end of every week to let him know how many folks we have confirmed to show up. He gave me his cell phone number incase we had any questions or special / specific needs / requests, so if there are any please let me know and I'll give him a call.
I also talked to the Hostess and she said that at 1pm the marjority of the lunch rush is over, so the planned 1pm meeting time should be just about perfect.
The Hostess also said she will update the bakery chef at the end of every week with how many folks we'll have coming so that on the day of the Pie Run there will be enough pies left over for our group after the lunch rush.
*** The Hostess also asked me if there were any pies inparticular that we wanted ?? ***
From what I saw today, they have quite a selection. I told her no specific pies are needed but if anyone has a favorite that they would like, let me know and I'll pass on the info to them.

I'm not going through all five pages to look - anyone want to camp out overnight on the back after the pie run? Mustang Island (state park area) is nearby and looks decent. Anyone ever stay there? Other than that one, is there anywhere else nearby to sleep on the beach?

The beach from Ingleside (Pie Run location) is about 15-20 min away.
Mustang Island State Park is literally a parking lot for RV camping and then some beach area. I have not ever gone there since other parts of the beach are free, but then again I wasn't camping and you can't just camp anywhere you want on the beach. So I can't really say if it's good or not.
Here is another place that's pretty nice, the Padre Island National Seashore:
https://imrcms.nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/camping.htm
It's pretty nice, I have actually paid to go here for the day with my family before. It's about 12 miles past the Mustang Island State Park.
The beaches in the entire area are "drive on" beaches meaning that vehicles are allowed to drive on the beach and the spots where you drive are pretty hard packed. I would think a V-Strom would have no problem depending on what kind of tires you have. Since I moved to TX I have only had a Ninja 500, CBR 600, and now a VFR 750 all of which I never dreamed of riding on the beach. But those V-Stroms are alot more versatile.
There are places in both Mustang Island State Park & Padre Island National Seashore that do not allow vehicles.
If you guys have any other questions just ask and I'll do my best to answer them.

Mincemeat is good, but have you ever had a double crust raisin pie? That's the best!:eat:
Here is a description of it here (http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1832,157172-225197,00.html)
The only pie I know that will make profound transformation in people's lives is Key Lime. Most of the one's you get are horrible and very sweet. You have to use actual Key Limes and not lemons. The final flavor is slightly tart using only a hint of whipped cream. There is a restaurant called Houston's that I tried once in Houston, Texas (near the Goode Company BBQ joint). They had one of the best Key Lime pies the world have ever witnessed.

Better yet, no whipped cream at all. I got hooked on KLP on business trips to Jacksonville, FL, and visiting a restaurant called Strickland's in Mayport. MMMmmmmmmmmm.... :eat:
Pie color is usually yellow with a touch of green. If it is Kawasaki green, then it is probably not KLP...

Key lime juice, unlike regular lime juice which many people use instead, is a pale yellow. If it is dark green, then it something other than the Key Lime mixture. The filling in key lime pie is also yellowish, largely due to the egg yolks you add. Some cooks add food coloring to give the pie filling a green color. This practice is frowned upon by those who make traditional key lime pies.
During mixing, a reaction between the condensed milk and the acidic lime juice occurs which causes the filling to thicken on its own without requiring baking. Many early recipes for key lime pie did not instruct the cook to ever bake the pie, relying on this chemical reaction to produce the proper consistency of the filling. If you do bake it, it changes the flavor. Some people prefer to cook it for fear of eating salmonella etc. from raw egg products. I think this type of pie came from the "old world" before the advent of modern stoves. It can be made without electricity. In the heavy, tropical moist air of the Gulf of Mexico, the lightish tart flavor is refreshing.
To make Key Lime taste delicious is actually quite hard. With chocolate, you really can't really botch it very easily, but great KLP is much sought after delicacy after caviar and pre-castro cigars...well maybe not that much :)
BTW, Key Lime Pie is the official state pie of Florida (http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=32043) and anyone not using REAL Key Limes in it's production can be fined $100.00! They take this seriously...

If any long haulers need a sleepover for the trip down to the pie run, you would be welcome to the use of my cabin at Canyon Lake. It is two rooms connected by a screened in breezeway, in one room a double bed and bath and in the other a very comfortable futon (dbl bed) and kitchen. Also, plenty of space for campers (tent or pop-up). There is a very nice convenience store within two miles.
The distance from the cabin to Ingleside is 205 miles (3 hr 15 min) quickest or 192 miles shortest (4 hr 32 min).
If interested, please send me a PM.

Don't know if I count as "the Austin bunch" but this is my route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=8323147569189212205,29.874070,-97.668880&saddr=austin+tx&daddr=US-183+%4029.874070,+-97.668880+to:28.008649,-97.189178+to:2144+Highway+361,+Ingleside,+TX+78362&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=13&via=1,2&sll=28.000464,-97.187119&sspn=0.065477,0.150719&ie=UTF8&ll=27.871859,-97.110901&spn=0.524439,1.20575&z=10
Trip time is 189 mi – about 3 hours 43 mins. I plan to leave from the Diamond Shamrock, Mustang (Ridge) Travel Center on 183 (left side headed south) just prior to the Hwy 21 overpass. KSU is 7:30am. This will provide 90minutes "slack time" and perhaps arrive a bit early to tire kick and tell some lies before lunch. I would like to take the V-Star but it needs a new front tire and service done so I may be on the V-Strom.

I'll try to keep the tally running up until the last minute. Looks like a good turnout in the making - I just hope the weather holds up.
The wife & I will be leaving sometime Thursday morning and taking the "due south" route. Right now it looks like US77 south of Waco, through Giddings, La Grange, Victoria, and Refugio into Ingleside. Expect to arrive late afternoon, depending on when we can get away. Multiple stops planned.
Also depends on whether we take a detour thru Temple or not... :ponder:
Expect to meet up with STScott on Friday for some sightseeing. If anyone else is going to be around, please PM me for my cell phone number.
Also planning to stay Saturday night and head back on Sunday morning. Right now, I have 2 routes planned - one east of I35 (Goliad, Gonzales, Lockhart, Bastrop, Taylor) or west of I35 (Beeville, Sequin, New Braunfels, Johnson City, and US281 north).
But... plans can change - we'll see what happens.

Are you still going out of Alvin tomorrow? Due to a last minute schedule change, I am back in town tonight, can now make the run and if you are still going, I am interested in a ride along. Let me know! If anyone is still keeping tally - +1 more.
Greetings from Port Aransas!
I called Chuck and found out Susan is relatively OK, but the scooter needs work or duct tape to make it home. I have in-laws in Corpus and an extra spot with Rhonda and the girls in the Jeep if need be. He's going to let me know tomorrow what he's come up with. Anyone from the Houston area driving down that can/will drag my trailer behind them?
Well, no need for a trailer yet. If we need one, we can work something out for heading to DFW. It's out of the way for most of the folks down here.
We got Susan a new helmet after visiting the Lady Lex and the State Aquarium. We rode 2-up on the Wii today - no sweat for that 650cc double-thumper. Thanks to Scott (STSCott) for leading the way with his GPS and helping carry a couple of extra things. Also, thanks to Kurt (txmedic) and Phil (TX F2) for the phone calls and offers to help. Plus, I got a couple of PMs from others.
Susan got bruised up and is pretty sore. Thank God she didn't break anything, especially her foot that has taken the brunt twice before. She is in good spirts and trying to keep moving so nothing stiffens up. She thiought that the sightseeing today helped and was a good idea.
The biggest problem with scooter is that the windscreen was shattered plus several plastic parts broken. It will be ugly, but I hope to duct tape it together and give it a fighting chance. She may still ride it home, but will depend on how she feels on Sunday. If anyone wants to take a look, it is parked at the Best Western Naval Station Inn, just a half mile south of Floyd's.
We got the helmet and a replacement mirror at Dynamo Cycle on Ayers Street. I was wearing my TWT shirt and a young fella noticed and asked if we were here for pie. Both he and his wife ride - he has registered but hasn't posted yet. Great shop - lots of stuff there and friendly people. They will be closed tomorrow - they have several runs scheduled at The Texas Mile, so he will miss the pie run tomorrow.
Well, that's that latest info. Now, the jinx is broken - we have taken care of the spill for this event - nobody else is allowed to do anything except break their diet. Watch out for the wind and ride safely.

If needed, I can trailer the bike to my home in San Antonio, then a week later bring it to DFW. I am going to Arkansas to get my Ural checked over. I am in Rockport now. Will be at Floyd's tommorow for PIE!!!!!!

Chuck,
Not sure if this is a viable option for you, but if needed you are more than welcome to put the scooter in my garage (my VFR will like the company. lol) until you can arrange transportation for it back to your place. My place is only 15 minutes from your hotel.
See you tomorrow for some :eat:

Thanks for the offers - much appreciated. I should have the temporary repairs finished in the morning & then see what all the options are.
Here are pictures from the crash location (N28.07670 W97.48183 from the GPS). If somebody wants a pile of parts, that's where they are... (maybe some super glue and clear sealing tape :ponder: )

Test rode the scoot and the only real issue is the lack of wind protection. I buzzed by Floyd's and there are already people there, so I guess I'll try to make the 1/8 mile trek down there! :rider: :eat: :rider:
