DaveG, Terraxpedition, his buddy on a klr650 and me met up in Sabine Pass yesterday. DaveG met me around 1pm and went to do some exploring...needless to say there arent too many roads off the beaten path or the beach there. 93DPS(mick) met up around 3 and we hit up clam lake road and went halfway down Mcfaddin Bch before it was time to meet up with the guys from Louisiana. As soon as those guys met us, the sun was under the horizon and so a lil night ridin was in store for us. We headed off West down the beach to grab a bite to eat in Crystal Bch. The riding was rough with my 17" sm wheels getting swallowed up by the deep sand at times leading to one slow speed get off ( ). Fog/mist off the Gulf hurt visibility and we decided to hit the first restaurant we came across. After a late dinner we hit asphalt for the ride home through a chilly/foggy night and set up camp on the beach. The night was beautiful and fog lifted by the time we were ready to go to bed. After waking up, the klr650 started having problems. Scott and him decided to head home due to bike problems and DaveG headed out too. I headed out for one last run...and turned around about halfway since the weather was getting bad. Hope that KLR made it home...maybe scott can post up and update on how the ride home went, also Dave has some vids and pics he may post up...great meeting yall and it should be a fun weekend again next weekend in LA.

The night was fun.... the fog was crappy... food was crap. I wear glasses and the fog was so thick it misted over my glasses in about 2 minutes of riding. I eventually gave up on the glasses and rode without:eek2: ... Fog, no glasses and a bad headlight had me puckering and locking up to keep from hitting this....

After the ride back, and camp setup, we talked for a couple hours until the sea lulled us to sleep. I think we were all out in about 3 minutes after hitting the sack. I didnt hear any snoring, but either I was out or the sound of the waves overpowered it.

The ride back, I definately was falling asleep... late night, boring roads... I stopped at the Suzuki bike dealership in Leesville, found a shady spot and took a 20 minute nap.

KLR made it to just north of Port Arthur at the base of the Rainbow Bridge.... well... the sprocket is "well rounded" and a little bumpy... I sat w/ Heath for a little while, but because I was going to have to ride back, I took off at 1:00 and made it home by 5.

yall shoulda called, I coulda trailered him at least halfway to meet his dad. It should be a quick fix; from the symptoms that wouldnt have been in my top 5 guesses but from now on I'll remember to check that out. well in any case those are some cool pics...that one with the flower is definitely a keeper.

with the soft sand the kickstands would just dig in and drop the bike otherwise....wood and other things to use as a platform were hard to come by out there

Sure was. I was trying to get hold of Dave or Mr. Taco.... but they were to busy riding... having fun... while we tried to flag down unfriendly Texas drivers! And we had about 50 motorcycles pass with no one stopping to ask if we needed help....:argh:

Between May 9 and June 9. As long as its after I get out of school and gives my 42 days of travel before I have to be back for other engagements. I dont give a flying fornication.... if you catch my drift.:lol2:

Well, then let me say this - you CAN NOT leave before May 12th.
(that's when I get back from my trip and if you leave before then I won't be able to escort ya out of town!)

I had fun sleeping on the beach, I'm almost always down to ride the beach, unfortunately its just limiting the amount of places to explore (havent learned how to ride my bike on top of marsh yet), next time we could throw in a trip to galveston in the daytime to take up some time...only thing that sucks that close to summer is big *** skeeters.

Maybe the wind will blow like it was Saturday.

This is what we can do, I can leave earlier in the day... like 8:00 get to Sabine pass by 1:00 eat lunch, we can ride to Galveston eat dinner and then continue southwards.... Find another place to pitch the tent. :trust: Soft sands would be preferred.
Where is there to camp an hour or two south of Galveston? Preferably nice n quiet like where we were over the weekend?

My issue is lacking the ability to carry more than a change of clothes and a toothbrush on my bike. I'd have to trailer to somewhere, unload, then ride and end up somewhere else where I have no tent, bag, etc.

Maybe I never fully understood - did y'all meet with your gear somewhere and then go riding and come back to your stuff? Cuz I can do that!

Get you a set of cheap throw over saddlebags. Do them similar to this....

No space on the back of the 400, plus nothing to keep 'em from swinging into the tire. I got small ATV panniers that I use on the tank for first aid kit, extra fuel, bottle of water, and misc. items. Everything else has to fit in a backpack.

I can also try to dupe a non-riding friend into driving down to meet us for the camping & hanging out part.

I was in pain riding just 50 miles on pavement back to camp in Big Bend on that thing, plus it chewed up too much of my knobbies. It's really just a plated dirt bike.

I'll keep my options open - I'll test fit your bags on my bike to see just how bad it would be. ;-)

Only places come to mind are=Galveston st park[nothing on the beach there]
and it packs out when the sun comes up.

Maybe san louis pass[think you can camp/primitive]at the s. end of galveston.

Next stop is freeport-know they have beach camping ,not sure where.

Beach camping is kinda iffy around civilization=they don't want it!!!

Ride the beach on the strom! While the pace may be a little slower, with the strom, you can BRING IT ALL.

I have a DRZ400. Other than it being a supermoto its basically a plated dirtbike. I plan on running dirtbagz at first then later on buying happytrails alum. panniers( I liked scotts). I see no problem with that set up and throwing a lightweight tent/sleeping bag onto a rear rack(I will be ordering mine next week!). In anycase, ratchet straps may do wonders:trust:

I've camped there before. You can't run on the beach too far unless you have a boat waiting for you to cross the intracoastal =] I think there are some parts you'd have to stomp through as well.

Actually there's some of the best beach riding on the East Penn. IMO...way better than High Island.:sun:
